Some have called it the most important novel since... James Joyrce, "Ulysses" - forget about trying to understand it; just read it for sheer pleasure, which is possible believe it or not, though for me I couldn't get to that level till the second reading of it. Virginia Woolf, "Mrs. Dalloway" - I like it, very experimental, the woman's "Ulysses". Michael Ondaatje, "In the Skin of the Lion" - he also wrote "English Patient", but I didn't like that one too much, this one is much more beautiful and intimate and cozy. Franz Kafka, "The Trial" - just got done with that today. Really weird, but compelling. Paranoids might want to stay away. Gertrude Stein, "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas" - Forget about the fact that Gertrude is writing someone else's autobiography, forget about the constant self-aggrandizing (unless you happen to get a kick out of that), and like "Ulysses", read it for the sheer fun of the prose. And I just noticed that these are African novels, sorry about this Anglo-centric list. I'm leaving stuff out, as usual but I better get back to my paper. PS I have to add Vladimir Nabokov's "Pale Fire," it has a proto-HOL structure in that the first half of the novel is a 999-line poem and the second half is the commentary (ie footnotes) on that poem, but don't read it like HOL going directly to the footnote each time it appears but do it cover to cover and Nabokov is always funny as all get out Lee "Do your dreams come true?" "I haven't had a nice dream for years." >Just if you're interested, here are some of my fave awesome African novels >translated in English (just personal recommendations, mind you): > >"The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born" by Ayi Kwei Armah >"Down Second Avenue" by Ezekiel Mphahlele >"Nervous Conditions" by Tsitsi Dangarembga >"Harvest of Thorns" by Shimmer Chinodya >Anything by Ngugi >(Of course) anything by Achebe >Also... try an oral legend someone's written down for ya, like "Sundiata" > >When you're done, pick a new continent and repeat... > >- -Alan > > >Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 14:34:18 -0700 > >From: "i hate boys" > >Subject: NPR: a good book > > > >I just got done reading "The Poisonwood Bible" by Barbara Kingsolver. > >It > >was an excellent book about life in the African Congo and I >recommend it > >to anyone who wants to be enlightened on that subject. > > > >Melissa _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 00:16:00 -0700 From: "Crissy Fletcher" Subject: Re: Poe has been confirmed as special guest star ...... Okay, now that everyone knows when and where, if anyone would like, I can again post a list of all the vital info on houseofleaves.4t.com, and if we can get together lists of which psychos are going to which shows, I'd hope that we can also organize meeting places for each show and get you folks together. I'm not sure what sort of access you will have to Poe on this tour, its not really her tour, she's just a "special guest", so I highly doubt Psychos will get the superb VIP treatment we've had in the past. I'm not sure what POE has planned for the tour or the psychos, but if you're planning on going to any of these shows let me know and I'll put up a page at houseofleaves.4t.com to show everyone where to meet, show times, etc. If you don't have a clue what I mean, check out the Borders tour coverage. I'll also pass along any info to Dean for coverage at Polishchick, and if the psychos do get together TAKE PHOTOS... Angry-psychos.com needs your help to be updated. On a sad note I sincerely doubt I'll be heading to any of these shows, ticket prices are no doubt to be around $80-$100 and there is no Pittsburgh show, and I can't take a road trip unless it's a weekend... THEN to add, my best friend who is also 22 LOOOOOVES them as well so that just shows how wide the age range for them are. i might actually motivate myself to pick one up and read it sooner or later. i'm just in the middle of a bunch of books myself. ever hear of Micheal Hornberg? No? then you should. ok, he has all of two books out and i've read them both within 2 days b/c i couldn't put them down. First is BongWater, now that was made into an independent movie that i have YET to find. it pisses me off. then came out his second just recently in paperback (which i waited for a whole year for) called Downers Grove...it was just great. if you're into that whole our age group odd finding yourself books, then these are the way to go. then, as odd as it can be, MTV has books out. anyone heard yet? Has anyone heard of Perks of Being A Wallflower? well that's one of them. they have all these different authors that are just coming out. pretty much every single one that i've read, is great. one of my favorites is Floating, then there's the recent one called Brave New Girl. The Fuck Up was pretty good too. i could go on forever about them. ok that's enough for now. i'm done. ooh real quick, if there's any Oliver Stone fans out there, get his book A Child's Night Dream...fabulous. he wrote it when he was way younger and just had it published about maybe 5 years ago b/c he was too young when he wrote it. but yeah, ok that's that. i'm done. marianne ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 13:57:41 -0500 From: "Brandon Wilson" Subject: W00T! Not thrilled with my seat location either, but I'm happy just to be in the same building with Poe. Now I just have to learn a few Depeche Mode songs I guess (I was never a fan). I'm thrilled that Poe is finally getting a chance to get on the road and to perform the songs from Haunted live. I know that's been the goal for a while now. Hopefully this will build enough support for the album that she'll be able to come back around on her own tour shortly afterwards. It's described as a "Gothic Fairytale" and I don't really believe it that much either. It's a good book though, the way the plot is written it is not drawn out or too short and has a lot of imagery in it. Also, has anyone read the Virgin Suicides?
