I'm not much for female singers, in the grand scheme of things. Nothing against them, I just tend to prefer the guys. Which is odd in that I am a DIEHARD sing-alonger. So you'd think I'd be trying to pick out some stuff I could easily belt along with. Not I. I like a challenge, I guess. Melissa Etheridge said she was the same way in her musical choices growing up. She liked to growl and grit along with male vocals. (OK, she also said she liked to pretend she was singing to the girls too and that was easier with a male vocalist, and we differ there, but it's still a fun story.) But there are some female singers that I particularly dig, and they tend to prefer sittin' in with the guys a lot themselves. I recommend Victoria Williams, Kathy Griffith, Melissa Etheridge (I'm SO particular for her album "Yes I Am".... I still hate Sheryl Crow for ROBBING her of the Grammy that ye ar. Yes, I'm one bitter bitch.) Yes, these women all tend to fall on the "folky" side once in a while, but quite often, they have a grit and edge to them that many men, much less women, can't even match.
