They do some amazing stuff. I don't have any offhand, but you could check out www.cottonwool.com for some live videos, especially Gorecki, what an amazing song. I would also recommend "The Controls." I dunno if anybody's heard of them, I think they had just one album. But, I really like it. It's kind of like Portishead, in a way. Anne Colville has a really interesting voice. Then there's Hooverphonic. Personally, I really like the first CD, A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular, like the second CD Blue Wonder Power Milk a little less, then don't really like the newest one, The Magnificent Tree or something like that. Again, comparison to Portishead, except....livelier, I guess? Hmmm... Another one I like is Andrea Parker. She doesn't quite fit the definition - she's a dj. But she does have a song or two with vocals, which I really like, along with the rest of her stuff. I guess I included her more as a girl DJ than vocals, but... I remember seeing somebody talk about Esthero before. You might have heard her on the Black Eyed Peas song "Weekends." Again, I dunno if Esthero fits, but I really like her and think it might be worth your while to check her out. Can't really categorize her (much like POE), but maybe jazz/techno/chill-out music...maybe. Kinda related to that is Dot Allison. Hmmmm, I've heard it described as "comedown music." It's very slow and almost dreamy, I guess? Let me throw in Emiliana Torrini and Tricky too real quick, Tricky epecially so on Maxinquaye. ok well I've taken up enough of eveybody's time, hopefully there'll be something in here that you and other people will find appealing. best, Kung-Gene >From: Dracovixen@aol.com >To: angry-psychos@smoe.org >Subject: Always on the Lookout for New Music >Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2001 22:43:55 EST > > >Ok, I am needing more music in my life (even though everyone claims I have >too much music now, but hey, I'm addicted, very happily addicted). Or Mary Timony's solo album? * Free Kitten, specifically their "Sentimental Education" album? * Yoko Ono? * Blonde Redhead, who have two singers, one of whom is a chick named Kazu who is amazing? * Lydia Lunch's very good bands: Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, and 8-Eyed Spy? * Melt-Banana? * Stereolab? That can get you started. I imagine you know that Tricky's first three albums feature a very good singer named Martina Topley-Bird, which is a name I like very much. On the heavier/darker side look for Kidney Thieves, Drill, and Meg Lee Chin. Also if you like Drill try MDFMK, not female vocals all the time, but when they are it's the lead singer from Drill, though she's got a bit of a different style between the two projects. Of course if you like MDFMK then check out KMFDM, but I digress. Of the three I prefer Kidney Thieves. As for your list, I would be overjoyed for there to be another Imogen Heap and Ruby fan out there, buy both "I Megaphone" and "Salt peter" now. Ruby used to be in a band called Silverfish, more punkish than her solo work. Not to mention Chin and Ruby (as Lesley Rankin) have both been contributors to Pigface as well. If you need more details let me know, just wanted to drop those names in a post to everybody for fun ;P Every other artist you listed (both those you like and those you're interested in) is on my list of favourites as well though. - - phoenyx / Darc_Angel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 05:52:14 -0800 From: "Tim Dube" Subject: Re: Always on the Lookout for New Music kinda npr check out the Cranes they are excellent!! Long-time lurker (about an hour- catching up on the NPRs), first-time poster. If this thread had not existed, it would have been necessary to invent it. Everytime I thought of a good chick band, someone jumped on 'em before I could. Here are a few I love that haven't made it on here yet. Concrete Blonde Joan Osborne Cowboy Junkies (there are some rockin' Junkies tunes, not just soft stuff) Mother Station (good luck finding it) Susan Tedeschi (blues, great stuff) Sue Foley (also blues, great guitar) Dido (maybe this was mentioned) Sass Jordan More to come as I blow the dust off my cassettes. OOps... almost forgot Janis. I absolutely *adore* them! Sarah Blackwood is *soooo* gorgeous - -- I actually bought the Japanese import of 'Goodbye' that has a byoootiful picture of her on the cover. ::calms down:: As you can tell from that girlish outburst of mine (I can't help it, not with Dubstar!), I really like them, enough so that I have bought the Japanese version (re: very expensive) of both albums. The US version of 'Goodbye' is actually just a compilation of the UK version of that particular album and the album previous to it, 'Disgraceful'. There are definitely some awesome songs that didn't make it to the US album. My guess is that you heard "Stars" on the radio, and it's certainly my favorite song of theirs. As gorgeous as dear Sarah -- but on the whole, not much like their other songs at all, which are more infectiously dance-pop and less of that orchestral, atmospheric triphoppy stuff on "Stars". If "Stars" _isn't_ what got you into Dubstar, my guess is "Cathedral Park" did. In that case, that's what Dubstar for the most part sound like. In any case, my advice is to get the US version, packed with goodness. The Japanese imports are very expensive, I think each goes for $26 at the local shoppe, but on Disgraceful, there is an incredibly good song on there, "The Day I See You Again," that's quite like "Stars" and tugs at your tearducts. And it has a great line: "If the man you've grown to be / Is more Morrison than Morrisey." I can't say anything about their 3rd album, 'Make It Better', which has been getting rather tepid reviews and also is only available as an import. >trip-hop... musicians who use often use female vocalists... OK, the magic word, sets me off like a bat out of heck. The first artist that I always think of is Archive, specifically 'Londinium.' They are like Mono in that they are a glossier (in terms of production) Portishead, but IMO 'Londinium' is better produced. Unfortunately, _that_ album is also only available as an import. I think it's almost worth the twentysome dollars just for the singer, Roya Arab; she is very emotive, her lyrical delivery is fresh, and I happen to like her better than Beth Gibbons. Don't bother with Archive's second album, though, as Roya is not with them and anyway that album is pretty dreadful. Next, I don't think you mentioned Tricky. His later stuff is getting rather dodgy, but definitely check out 'Maxinquaye' if you dig the Mono-style trip hop. Certainly a seminal trip hop album. In a similar but not vein, Andrea Parker is quite good. She sings some on her 'Kiss my Arp' album. Really deep bass, an electro-techno-tinged trip hop. About half of the album is instrumental though, and those songs get into some pretty fractured beats that don't necessarily appeal to everyone. Alpha is pretty relaxed. They're on Massive Attack's label, actually, and they operate like them: a core group of producers (in this case, two guys), with a rotating set of vocalists, two women and one guy. All of these singers are great, especially Helen White, whose sound is like honey. They have two albums, Comefromheaven and TheImpossibleThrill. I've onlly heard the first one, but TheImpossibleThrill I've been told is quite a lot better. There's a "band" called Goldfrapp, made up basically of Alison Goldfrapp (who has worked with Tricky and Orbital and whom I count as one of my favorite vocalists) and Will Gregory. I'm a little lukewarm about the album ('Felt Mountain') personally, but the '60s pop and soundtrack style really appeal to a lot of people. About my beloved Portishead: if you have both (or all three) of their albums, get all the singles too. At the very least the "Sour Times" single, which has "Theme from 'To Kill A Dead Man" and "Tribute to Monk & Canatella", both of which are among my favorite |P| songs. Almost forgot but shouldn't have: Lamb. Popularly considered to be |P| meets drumandbass, but that's sort of simplistic (such a label I'd reserve for Amon Tobin, but he's a whole nuther kettle of fish). With Lamb, you do get drumandbass breaks, but the arrangements propel the songs beyond the beats, all of the arrangement is good stuff. Plus, Lou Rhodes is a doll. She sounds from what I've been told like Billie Holliday, with some Beth Gibbons thrown in. Get both albums. I like the self-titled debut better, since it has the awesomely beautiful "Gorecki" on it, but both are winner. And not trip hop, but IMO essential listening if you appreciate the female voice at all: Cocteau Twins! Though for me, I don't like anything before 'Treasure'. Liz sets the standard in terms of vocal beauty. 'Treasure' and 'Heaven or Las Vegas' are my personal favorites. Yeah. I like chick singers. :) Lee "Do your dreams come true?" There's "Tina and the B-Sides." An awesome band that I feel a little guilty about listening to. (I'm male) It's sort of a rough and ready blues sound. Good tracks are 'Falling from Grace' and 'Does it feel real?" On another note, there's "Stuart Davis" who isn't really nationally known, but rather popular around here. (Madison-Minneapolis Axis) Consider his music sort of a punk-folk with an even dispersement of funny and touching tracks. As an aside, can we persuade Poe to come to Madison? I think I could use a good night at the Barrymore. And I don't think my car would make it even to Chicago since half the time it doesn't make it to work. adam "That which does not rise to consciousness comes to use as fate. -Jung ------------------------------ End of angry-psychos-digest V6 #112 ***********************************
