Hey guys, I know that moderated chat is frustrating and boring and lame. I have never, in all my days, been to a moderated online chat that was more interesting than reading a fluff piece in some magazine. (I hear that David Bowie is pretty good, because he makes them into a sort of three-ring circus of the absurd, but that's just hearsay.) Not to sound "old school" as, ha ha, ilmortal might say, but there were wild unmoderated crazy chats in the old days at poe.org, and they were totally fun. However I am rather worried that a Yahoo chat will not be able to handle the number of people who will be typing in 1 million comments a second. In those old days, Poe was getting booted every five minutes. Also, while I look on them with rose-colored glasses as a utopian ideal, they can be frustrating in a different way, as the Poe-to-AP comment ratio is like 1/500, and I'd say that's an optomistic number. I mean, to me, that was what made it fun, the fact that while waiting 10 minutes for the next Poe comment, we'd be yakking back and forth about whatever. But some people might not like it. Also, the first chat anyway, she paid more attention to a racist troll (commenting on her "Polish nose", as I recall) than to the APs who cared. Unmoderated chats are just that. Personally, I think that on the whole, IRC is a smoother, simpler operation for the amount of people and the amount of typing that would be going on, and I think Dan's weird personal issues with IRC and DALnet in particular are getting in the way of seeing this kind of thing clearly. It is pretty amusing that he thinks of #poe as being "Poe's own chatroom" and that therefore DALnet has no right to "ban her", and all that jazz, but amusing is not the same thing as right. Anyway. I guess it can't hurt to try it at Yahoo. But don't be too disappointed if technical difficulties and reams of extraneous text get in the way of your good time. And hey, don't give up on the idea of unmoderated chats if it doesn't work on Yahoo. Twalen Fleety MonkeyMan Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! In the next week or so I will be pushing to open the House Code page as linked to on the Text area of HOL by MZD. This section will include any translations from other pages, the coded letter and several new findings. And I actually agree with you 100%!!! I have no idea if this will work on Yahoo or not, and I ALSO agree that it might work better in IRC, particularly for those of you that like IRC and are used to it's conventions. I even agree that my issues with DalNet are personal and maybe even bizarre. Since I have been online ( since 1982) I have watched these clicks grow that try to exclude others. This was mostly on the old stand alone Bullitin Boards. Then the Internet allowed public access ( it had been military and university only). The ideas that we embraced and that fired everyones imagination on the Internet was that of NO censorship and NO regulation of word or thought would be TOLERATED. It was international and no group or government interference was TOLERATED!!! Look at the battles that developed even when attempts were made to legislate hate speech and pornograpghy off the Net!!! You didn't hear people saying don't do it, we LOVE hate speech, we WANT porn!! NO, that was not the point! The point was the Internet was FREE, UNREGULATED. We would take care of the spammers, we would take care of what we didn't want to see by NOT LOOKING!!! We had filters, we had working minds. I do not believe for a MOMENT that DalNet does not have the techical capability of klining an UNLIMITED number, but I do not believe in censorship and I do not believe in speech control. There are other ways to deal with it! We ARE #Poe, if someone comes in OUR room and starts behaving in a way that we don't like we can ask them to leave our house, our room, we can ignore him, filter him out but we should NOT censor him or lock out his ability to speak ----other then in our OWN house/room. When DalNet banned AOL it did not affect me! I have three other ISPs I can use. But it DID piss me off! I have no problem with them taking care of the "lawbreakers" those that broke the rules of the house --- terms of service or whatever. But that is NOT what they did!!! They banned MILLIONS of INNOCENT "law" abiding users. They EVEN banned Poe!! What if they said they had done a study that says 80% of the spam is from blacks, so ALL blacks are banned from DalNet. 90% of porn spam is from homosexuals, so no bi or gays will be allowed and most of the hate speech is by teens, so no one under 30?? NONE of us would accept this! AOL refused to censor their members - it is not their JOB to! DalNet censored 27 million people!!!! Even if we accept that 1 million of them were spamming ( which I doubt) that is still 26:1 that were banned for NO reason but their ISP of choice! Is my disgust at this weird? YES!!!! It is!!! I agree. Is it personal??? Yep, sure is!! But even if I am the ONLY one that feels this way it is my deep belief and I have been genuinly offended by DalNets behavior! So what does it all mean?? Not a darn thing to anyone but ME! These are MY beliefs. The way that I feel and I wanted to express those beliefs. For a time I felt a boycott against DalNet was in order. I was wrong. That would be ME doing the same thing I was accusing them of doing. Besides I have grown to love my fellow APs and I don't want to leave. MonkeyMan, thank you for expressing yourself in a thoughtful mannor without flaming or insults. THIS is the kind of exchange that we ALL learn from. I take your words to heart, even those I don't agree with. I also hope you are not offended by "weird" ideas. Despite her being on Target's TV's for a month, the amount of employees that know her is pathetically small! A lot of us go out bowling/bar hopping/ Friday nights. The bar we went to was karoke, and I said that if they had any Poe, I'd sing. My three friends (a guy from price change, the girl who answers phones, and someone from security who's been around electronics every day for ages) all turned to me and said "Who?" Now, I live in NY. Supposedly, next to San Fran, NY is the place that is most varied. But, contrarty to this variety, I think I've realized why Poe isn't popular yet: She's not on the radio. And why isn't she on the radio? I pondered this for a long time, and finally came to a conclusion -- NY stations are categorized. Oldies, Alternative, Top 40, Hip-Hop, Easy Listening. Poe doesn't fit any of those categories. Also, there is no steady beat. Around here, you seem to need something to dance to, be it a waltz, a slow dance, or grinding out on the floor. Poe's beats change during her songs. Personally, I find that incredibly interesteing. It keeps me on my toes (figuratively.) When will people stop just listening for a beat and start listening to lyrics, and how well the music fits them? Am I the only enlightend person on Long Island? That's my rant. Hope it wasn't insulting or anything :) ~~Amanda~~ Spike: Don't see why I have to be tied up. Xander: It's just while I'm sleeping. Spike: Like I'd bite you anyway. Xander: Oh, you would. I was blessed some years ago with a radio station that was varied enough to play artists that no one else would touch. Unfortunately, the station changed so bye-bye Poe...but the damage on me was done, and I'm forever grateful. Poe has inspired my writing and my speech, as well as my general peception of things I thought were cut and dry. I think it's a crime to deny anyone else this experience. Even if a small number of people feel the same way I do, isn't that better than nothing? Maybe I feel a little too passionately about this, but I can't help it. I feel that if something can change my perception this drastically, maybe there are others like me that need Poe's music to make sense of it all. Particularly, the ongs "Lemon Merengue" and "Wild" have helped me through times when I had no words of my own and needed someone to tell me they know howI feel.
