Jobe" Subject: NPR: (but I wish it was) - ---Not that I'm tired of reading and participating in everyone's discussions of NPR topics(in fact I enjoy them), it's just that I grow tired of waiting for some news of Poe's next comeback. What's going on? The future seemed to be looking so bright. Is there ever going to be a tour? I mean does anybody know? Not that I'm worried, but I don't want her to disappear without a trace for another two and a half years.(Okay, maybe I AM worried.) Am I the only one that feels this way, or am I just being stupid? - ---I don't know, I'm just depressed...and hungry. I've been sick so I haven't really eaten in about two days, just been drinking Tang and eating crackers. And since I've been sick, none of my friends have come around to see how I've been. "There when you need them." Yeah right! Why is it that when you need someone to talk to, everyone suddenly disappears? - ---No matter what anyone says, this group is not just a way to find news on Poe. If that's all you want there are easier ways to get it than to have to sort through 30-80 emails a day.(she has a website with a message board) This is also a way for Poe's fans to relate to and understand each other. This group is the closest thing to a family that I've had in about five years. It's like having a whole bunch of extra brothers and sisters to talk to and argue with. But I could be wrong, as it seems I frequently am, maybe this SHOULD be a list without random thoughts about what makes us happy, pissed off, or sad... but I don't think so. Forgive me for rambling, like I said, I'm sick. (But I'm starting to feel better now.) - ---Jobe / \/ Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! The acting, direction (Ang Lee shows his potential at last), and story are all beyond reproach. Of the oscar nominee's it is the most deserving. Never the less I feel this film has been over hyped and over sold by film audiences. I have no complaints towards this film, yet I was not challenged by it. As a commercial piece it is beyond reproach, but what about the rest of the field? Requiem For A Dream and Dancer in The Dark were snubbed despite being true examples of the potential of the meduim. Films should occasionally demand more from their audience than the standard faire, but when they do, they are ignored for their lack of mainstream connectivity. Crouching Tiger is and example of such a "safe" film that stays on the fringe, and compared to Gladiator or Brokovich it is superior, but it does not compete amongst its peers. Only Films that approach 100,000,000$ have a chance at a "best picture" award, is that what defines such a noteworthy designation? Comercial success is nice and all, but artistic success should reign supreme, unfortunately audiences will only go so far as it feels safe. my 2c Kyle ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 06:09:31 -0600 From: "phoenyx" Subject: Re: NPR: (but I wish it was) > ---No matter what anyone says, this group is not just > a way to find news on Poe. As some one else said earlier in an attack on NPR posts, probably the only thing we can say for sure that we all have in common is an interest in Poe. To me that's the beautiful thing that makes NPR work, how we may not agree with each other, but in the end we can all make up and agree on the one thing that brought us together in the first place. You can't bring this many people together and expect them to talk about only one thing all the time, no matter how much we love Poe, that's just not going to happen. It leads to burn out and retreading old turf. I much prefer things a little more free form where it is more like a family or a gathering of friends, and people don't have to worry about what they post because of how closely related it is to Poe. It's all related to Poe because we're all related to Poe (well, maybe not biologically, but I think some of you know what I mean). Okay, just my two cents before my morning coffee, I'll use that to excuse any problems with the post. - - phoenyx / Darc_Angel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 08:00:53 -0500 From: Jennifer Ralston Subject: NPR: crouching tiger and npr woes >Just FYI i think the story is an ancient legend in Chinese history (i could >be wrong) except in the original story there were no women fighters. actually it was a novel, red halycon was right. from what i've read of other posts in film boards about it, it's an adaption of the most boring story arc in the series. but maybe the boring assessment is wrong. >The graphics were kick ass. The same guy/team who did the Matrix did this >one too. the same fight choreographer, yuen wo ping. the visual styles otherwise are completely different as "crouching" is a low-tech "wire-fu" movie--just an extrememly well-choreographed and well-shot one. the script was co-adapted by james shamus and a chinese-speaking writer but i don't think that has too much bearing on how much of the story gets lost in translation. as i was cutting on it, the picture department starting with giving me a version that had no subtitles (which made very little sense of course for me), then the first version came and i thought everything was starting to make sense, then a couple weeks later we got all new and in some scenes completely different subtitles and things shifted again. we had an assistant in the a.d.r. department who was fluent and she was able to explain a lot of the complexities to us. didn't hurt that we could always ask ang and the picture editor (tim) what was going on, too. i've found that a lot of audiences were kinda pissed off by the ending. having seen the film about 100 times by now (occupational hazard) i can say that i have no problem with any of it. it is a beautiful thing. as i said before: great movie, pretty damn cool film. better than erin brokovich and gladiator and all that other shite that it's up against for the best picture oscar. (of course, i wouldn't have minded being nominated for sound editing but only l.a. crews seem to get that honor.) as for the n.p.r. ranting, yeah--message filters and i am the first to apologize for any time that i have forgotten to put my little "NPR" in the subject header. or switch to the digest version. and thank the goddess that you have those two options because back when i first was on this list, years ago, i had a crappy email server that didn't have a filtering option that i could figure out and there was no digest version so what other choice did i have when i started getting 14 emails a day about whether or not walmart was the devil but take my name off the list? face it though, even if she had the inclination i doubt that poe could talk about herself 24 hours a day and hell, she knows what she's doing so she has something to talk about! sometimes we get off topic, way off, and yeah, there's a lot of stuff that i could care less about. the more people get adamant about their "you said that i implied that..." bs the faster i scroll down the digest list and some weeks, i don't read anything at all. but i think we should all recognize that, as angry and psychotic as we are, people are bound to piss us off. that includes each other. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 08:47:12 EST From: Trueluhv2000@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR: (but I wish it was) Hi all, I have exactly 2 minutes to babble about all this. It's Shelly's Poe discography. http://members.aol.com/Vr5sBloom/poediscography.html or .txt There you will read about the following singles: * Trigger Happy Jack (featuring the "Drive By Remix", so whenever you guys mention the "Drive By Remix" I always think you're talking about this, at first. This single is way hard to find, but contains Padre Fear, so look for it, because that song is better than anything else in the Poe songbook.) * Angry Johnny (Promo or import only--used bins are your only hope) * Hello (3 versions: the ultra-impossible to find German one with hilarious euro-dance remixes, and the easy-to-find US single with the rockin' band version, and the also easy-to-find US single with a bunch of not as silly techno mixes) * Today (promo only) * Rise and Shine (easily found and for a good cause, though this good song is murdered by lame production) * Control (you could only get this by buying a computer game soundtrack from some computer-game soundtrack company. I refuse to call this the "Apocalypse remix" because it was recorded long, long before Haunted came out. Also features a big bunch of silly Bruce Willis clips.) * Walk the Walk (promo only) Meanwhile, I can't believe no one has remarked on how cool it is that we have a person who did sound for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon on the list.
