This is where we need everyone to put on a Radio Programmer hat. (For the APs to do this will basically require the loss of at least 50 IQ points and good degree of of our refined taste in music, but hey... it's for a good cause. : ) We have to think like radio does: First, we have to find a category for Poe, radio-wise, and go with that. Focus on her next single, "Wild". What we basically have here, in its simpliest form, is a dance song. A very strong, well-written AND performed AND produced dance song, but in the eyes of radio, most likely it would simply be seen as a "dance song." Think where you could imagine hearing "Wild" playing and it would fit in just perfectly, like at a club or maybe a rave or or even the top 40 radio station in your area. (What is the tops in one city may be totally unknown in another, or what is underground in one major city may be the most-requested song in another across the country.) This is where we need to focus on requesting "Wild" when it is finally released, (which just isn't damn soon enough, I know.) Also, (and though I cringe to suggest this method, but it truly must be done,) think of other stuff -- artists and/or songs -- that "Wild" remind you of so you when recommending it or describing it to someone who isn't familiar you can give them something to go on and perk their interest. Of course, we don't like to put Poe in a category or pigeonhole her or her music, (not that we even could if we tried,) but making comparions to other artists is not always bad and must be done at times. If your best friend tells you, "You have to hear this new band, they are SO GREAT!" you will probably take notice, but not as much as you would if they had said, "You've got to hear this new band.... They're great! They're kinda like a blend of old so-and-so mixed with new such-and-such but with heavier guitar and a female singer." So, in your area, request or push "Wild" where you would EXPECT to hear it, whatever format of radio or club or party or WHATEVER that may be. (And do talk to indie and freelance DJs, of course, with a song like "Wild". And even DJs you think that Poe wouldn't be "their thing." Rap/hip-hop DJs are always looking for beats to loop, cuts to sample, stuff to mix in, and we all know "Wild" - and ALL of "Haunted" has a shitload of that. I will look into the status of vinyl availability of her recent material for those wondering about this.) Thanx so much to EVERYONE who has responded and jumped to these latest developments. It is very appreciated. We're going to make this happen BIG! KORi ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Jan 2001 02:04:20 EST From: KoriG@aol.com Subject: Re: PR: NRK rocks! Hey, everybody. I'm Ben, and I'm from Holyoke, MA. I'm 23 yrs old. Where you first heard Poe? I first heard of Poe 6 yrs ago at a clothing store. The song was "Hello," and I was determined to get that song. Later I found out she sings it and got her cd. I was in for a big surprise. I didn't expect so many great songs in a cd, such as Trigger Happy Jack, Angry Johnny, That Day, Junkie, Fly Away, wow the whole cd. What other musicians do you listen to? Well, at first I listened to rap musics, and POE of course. After 3-4 yrs not seeing any new cd from her, I started to listen to mostly gangster raps (while still spinning her Hello cd, unbelievable, huh?) When I heard that her Haunted cd is out, I was so psyched and got it the very same day. Who'd know that I'd give up my usual listening and spin that cd whenever I have chance. This link will connect you to the R&R Directory. From there, scroll to "Radio Station Websites". There are lists for all formats. We have some focus points to note. R&R ONLINE Homepage In general, we are working with two songs here: the "limitedly sorta-single remix" of "Hey Pretty", and the soon-to-be-released single "Wild". While in theory of course we want radio stations of ANY format to play ANY of Poe's stuff, we know it just don't work that way. On the "Alternative" and "Adult Alternative", we can request both songs, but at "CHR", it will probably be best to focus on "Wild". R&R ONLINE Homepage Do not look at these as restictions by any means. It's just that we know why stations aren't playing Poe, (as clearly lined out in the response letter Stephan received,) but frankly, we have to ignore the excuses, and find ways to work around them. The stations want to blame the label, the label wants to blame the music-buying public in general... but the problem is no one and EVERYONE is to blame. And since sitting around pointing fingers don't get nobody nowhere, we APs should be the biggest of EVERYONE and just do what we have to do! (OK, I guess I took too many "You GO, gurl" pills this morning. I shall now chill.) ROCK ON everybody..... It says on the very fine Http://PolishChick.Com "It's all about the internet" Poe. Since the release of "Haunted" the number of AP's in the Ward has doubled to over 500, there are certainly more than 500 AP's on the combined Regular and Digest versions of the list. The Power Of Ten? what IF? What if each AP, who by being here, of itself says, you think quite fondly of Poe, what IF each AP, posted TWO Links to TEN Places? What TWO Links? Http://PolishChick.Com and http://media.atlantic-records.com/media/Poe/haunted/walk_the_walk.wav Why? Everybody likes something for free, especially on the net, they want it fast, they want it now!!! The link for the music file is .wav format, if a person has a sound card, I would say it is a very good chance they won't have a problem with this format, it should not be complicated for those who never play sound files. They will have to save it to disk, and it is 6mb. If a .mp3 solution is offered by the record company I would post that also. Notice how nicely (I Hope) the sound link fits in an e-mail without losing it's ability to be clicked!! and PLEASE whenever you post stuff, try to make it clickable don't tell friends about poe.org say http://poe.org so they are either tempted to click, or know they can go back to it later. Make stuff CLICKABLE Http://poe.navelsex.com (ed its down) is better than poe.navelsex.com OK so WTW because it comes from the record company etc... Http://PolishChick.Com Because: It is able to reach the largest audience due to its ease of use i.e.. no flash 5 required, a major complaint for both the current http://p-o-e.com and the old style http://poe.org . Even if you have it, if you are on a slow modem you may think your computer froze, when it did not. Http://PolishChick.Com Has great name recognition, no matter how you slice it. I like to call it a NewsPOEper, Dean does a great job of putting uP something new almost everyday. It points to everything else Poe that is on the net. WHERE to take these links? e-mailing 10 friends would be the easy way, please do that also. "It's all about the internet" Poe Hello? I have created what for some may be a map, to new places, and new cultures on the net. It's a two way venture, if you follow each link, you will find that each offers a way for you to explore interests outside of Poe. It is my hope that you will be able to make those in your new found interest groups aware of Poe, Mark, and the TWO Links. First you will find a dropdown menu, with a list of almost 300 bands with a "newsgroup" on "Usenet" please don't get scared off, because all you have to do is highlight the name of a band and it will drop you right into http://deja.com I'm just trying to cut out some of the confusion for those not familiar with Usenet, while providing an avenue to a subject music, that should encourage those not familiar with Usenet to take a stab at it. "It's all about the internet" Poe After that, its a short but important trail of major message boards, clubs, every national and hick town newspaper, and a few of the major networks. I challenge you all, I offer you a win win situation, go to these places, if you are not already members, participate, POLITELY, and when and where appropriate let people know about the phenomenon of the Danielwskis. What started as the thought of each of us just mailing TEN people we know who would be interested, brought me to the conclusion that in reality, what Poe and Mark have done, is really newsworthy, it would seem.... Just so you all know, I'm not trying to detract from the radio campaign, I spoke with KoriG and told her I had been putting something together, and this is it. Yes we need to request @ the radio stations, but who can we reach with these TWO Links? 500 X 10 X ? = Readers Those of you who write well, drop a line to the media biggies I have listed, and tell them why Poe and Mark should be on the national news, everybody should contact PBS / NPR it's a great story from so many different angels. CBS Sunday Morning would love this story... How often does it happen in the arts that a brother and sister create separate works that can be appreciated as one? I keep seeing Haunted / Hol as the "in thing", in about three years. BIG... but it will take people that long to comprehend. I see it like Rocky Horror Picture Show type of interest... Hello? Why do this? "It's all about the internet" Poe Well as you are spreading the word, you should be having fun, meeting new and interesting people, and perhaps learning about different aspects and protocols of the internet. I hope to get a list of free BBS's that are reachable by telnet posted soon. Remember now this isn't about pissing people off with SPAM, it's a trade, for example on yahoo clubs, join your metro (mine is rochester) and let people know about poe, hell all 500 of us could do that... Look at it like a crossword puzzle, a game, can you make TEN? WITHOUT spamming? Post your list!!! AGAIN Since we are all still recovering from the holidays' wallop on our wallets, Need to give a gift? Looking for a birthday present for a friend? Need the perfect Valentine's Day gift for a friend, loved one or sweetie? Of course you know what the perfect gift would be...... CDNOW : Items : Poe : Haunted on sale!!! With all the overpriced crap topping the charts that people are EXCESSIVELY paying top dollar for left and right, wouldn't you feel good giving the gift of EXCEPTIONAL music from a FABULOUS, DESERVING artist, at a nice price to you? (I really should sell cars or something. : ) But in all seriousness, keep in mind ... what a better way to promote and support Poe than giving "Haunted" as a gift when an occasion comes up? I mean, I can see why it probably wouldn't be the first thing you'd think to give to your 70-year-old grandmother for her birthday, even though a friend of mine actually did. Both she and her grandmother had been grieving over the loss of her grandfather, and when she found "If You Were Here" to be very helpful to her, she decided to take a shot and give the CD to her grandmother. (Yes, some 70-year-olds do listen to CDs!) Her grandmother LOVED the song, and listens to it often when she is sad and upset needs to calm herself. (She even played it for her Bible study group!) And yes, she has listened to the entire album. Of course some of it was a tad too much for her, but she actually listens to some of the other stuff from time to time. Karen and her grandmother found another common bond in the song. There are so many ways "Haunted" is the perfect gift. Don't be afraid that it may not be the giftee's "thing", or you aren't sure if they will like it or not. Trust in the your love for Poe's work and encourage and have faith in the open minds of others. Would you pay 15 bucks for a Poe t-shirt to publicly declare your fanship of Poe? Do one better - make another fan of her and give someone who doesn't have her CD a copy. They don't have a CD player? It's available on tape. No excuses! So keep it in mind -- a bouquet of POE for Valentine's Day... could there be a finer gift? : ) KORi ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Jan 2001 09:22:22 -0500 From: "Dean Morrison (BetaZine)" Subject: Re: More request help A few things based on the Kori e-mails over the last 2 days * Kori! some kick ass info - thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks!!! * I have a Haunted buy guide up online (tower is cheapest - Kori tip) I will be finished the complete Poe library on CD buy guide very soon.
