I'm a new psycho, and I got this little message telling me to email ya'll with some basic information. I'm too tired to think of a reason why I shouldn't, so here goes. My name's Matt, I'm 19. I'm from Fanwood, NJ, which is about 20 miles from NYC. I don't want to repeat too much of what I put on Poe.org, but I heard of Poe when I was talking to a girl out in California about House of Leaves. She mentioned Poe, and I ran out to buy Haunted and Hello. Poe's incredible. I'll leave it at that as opposed to clogging your screen with a hundred or so lines about how good she is. You all already know that, heck you knew it before me. I listen to a lot of music, and until recently I was a complete U2 junkie. Now, however, I've seen that there's more out there than Bono and the boys, there's Poe! I can't wait to go to one of her shows, and I'm really hoping she tours soon. Anyway, I think I've said enough, or maybe too much. Hopefully it was just right. I look forward to all the upcoming Poe emails. (short of breaking a few sticky laws : ) *L* Kori, darling, I'm not the ringleader. I'm just a member. :) But I don't think that means that I can't start something like this. We all need to help Poe out in her time of need. Some ideas: contact local radio stations (I happen to know someone who works for one, might be able to see what he can do about the situation); if you know of any local bands who have members who love/support her music, they may be able to give you some suggestions, so don't be afraid to ask if you know them. Flood your radio stations with song requests. That's not a hard thing to do. Pick up the phone and request. The record company hears about stuff like that, I guess. None of this is very hard. But we do need to give something back to the woman who has given us so much. Not exactly, I made my point. What caused my brash observation was the fact that I don't have internet access at home for the time being so when i got to work i had a full weekend's worth of the digest to read. This means I was, in fact, perusing vs. studying the posts. While I did take particular notice of the battle of the sexes issue between the women I did not know the origin of the conversation. All i saw were a couple girls talking about shity men and then basically saying, "way to go, pat on the back, kick em in the balls". I took my opportuniy to make a stand for us "misters that don't give mister a bad name" (ben harper reference). I'm sorry if i stepped on the wrong turf, but i stand by my statements. In no way was I forcing my opinions or even twisitng anyone's words. While the "kick em where it counts" phrase was taken out of context, it's message was not skewed. So I guess my point in this post is that that I jumped to the conclusion that the women were male-bashing. So, let my statements be a lesson for those that DO male bash. As far as smoking to calm down, thanks for the pointer, i think I'll do that right now :). - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 13:02:51 -0500 From: "KyL the Paladin" Subject: Re: 99X in Atlanta's excuse.... Hi Stephen, I have been with 99X since before POE's last album and was there when she was one of our artists in 1996. There are a lot of things that have had a real negative impact on POE's progress here at 99X. First of all, the industry has gone a lot harder and female music is rapidly going back into the shadows. Most of the alternative stations that helped break POE in back in '95 and '96 are now long gone. Stations like mine are now playing crap like Korn and Limp Bizkit. The only female musicians scoring big are on the sickly sweet pop stations. It is a real bad time for female muscians with talent. I am told by folks in the know that the tide will turn again soon but the question is how long our current favorite rock girls will remain a factor. I have watched a lot of really good musicians either call it quits or take long vacations because their albums just didn't sell. Then there is the LABEL problem. Atlantic hasn't been giving the album any push in the radio world (at least not with any of the big New Rock stations around the country). My MD and APD didn't even have copies of the album until I burned them ones off of mine. The fact that POE had a pre-tour was barely even mentioned to us by the label. I don't quite understand what is going on with the label but the lack of attention was enough for me to directly ask the regional AR director. He assured me more is coming but it may be too little too late. And 4 months later, nothing has happened. The third thing that will hurt POE is the lack of re-mixes being pushed. Most of the real success stories from HELLO were because of the brilliant re-mixes (both for clubs and for radio). The single Walk the Walk mix for radio isn't bad but having more choices would have improved its chances. I have tried and tried to get POE added to the rotation but for now, the best I have been able to do was get her featured on our new music show Sunday School (which has played her 3 times). The fourth thing that really hurt POE has been the loss of allies. Many of her champions lost contact with her over the 4 year break. The first time around 99X had Sean Demery (the old MD) as her champion. I was there but Sean was the power behind her success. After 4 years, everything has changed in the business and only a few of us are still with the stations that counted in '96. That is not to say that the support is not there, it is just a lot weaker today. This is where lack of label support really has an impact. And finally, Haunted is well beyond the format. While I personally think Haunted is the most brilliant album I have heard in years, the songs are almost too good. They are so masterfully blended with each other into the theme of the album that alone they seem almost incomplete. This is where the remixes would be important. Believe me, POE isn't forgotten at 99X. Just ask the music director who gets a commercial a week for POE presented to him by yours truly. If we won't play her, I hope I can get her play on our new station Q100. Either way we are still working on it. Take care...
