Not to try to start on a whole new debate, but to be truly helpful with the project, I just wanted to point out that we should be cautious to take note the difference between offensive and truly hateful lyrics. "Offensive" is a personal evaluation, (such as the person who says they find Christian music "hateful", or segregationist.) And then there is truly, undeniably hateful material, (such as the mysogenistic works of Eminem, Limp Bizkit, etc.) I'm not making any judgments on the Bloodhound Gang, (I have not heard these songs myself,) but I think trying to throw comedic works into this matter ma kes things rather difficult. There is enough truly hateful music (racist, sexist, whatever it may be) to work with! I, for one, am not offended by anything he's done musically or lyrically. I question some of the things he's done since becoming famous that go against his "be yourself" attitude, but I have no problems with his music. > Irresponsible Hate Anthem, 1996, Antichrist Superstar, The Reflecting God > (all off Antichrist Superstar), User Friendly off of Mechanical Animals (for the > sexually offensive), Disposable Teens, The Love Song, Cruci-Fiction in Space (off of > Holy Wood) I can't speak about the songs of Holy Wood (since I haven't heard it) but I personally feel that the ones you listed off Antichrist Superstar are good, well-written songs that have a message, unlike most crap that's popular today. > > Radiohead is another good one, as well as Rage Against the Machine. And how's this for shock value, Marilyn Manson covers Charles >Manson's Sick City. Well, though munster was stating how "offensive" Manson's material is to many people, it is important again to consider that controversial and/or "offensive" material may not necessarily be "hateful". If you listen to a Manson song and can actually see a sane person agreeing with the point of view without it being a matter of hatred towards a person or persons, as is their right even if it does not seem right to the majority, than it may not necessarily actually be "hateful". A lot of people are offended or upset by music that even SPEAKS of sex, rape, drugs, violence, etc. They don't even bother to listen to see if the performer takes sides, encourages or discourages the issue, or lays blame. There IS a difference between some macho rapper saying "women ain't good for nothin' but sex," or saying, "Hey baby, let's (enter something you find crude and harsh.)" The first statement imply a devaluing of women, but the second only implies the desire for whatever activity. It may sound totally ungodly to you, but there may be women out there that are down for that sort of thing. Yeah, "To each their own" can be a tough concept to grasp, but to accept society, you kinda have to get in to it. But as for Charles Manson, yes, it is more than fair to state that a good portion if not all of his material is indeed hateful. I don't know any songs off the top of my head, but I have heard and read a good portion of it. Hell, his anti-Semetism is well-known enough to prove that in spades as is. Chill out! Did you ever stop to think that her teacher may have given this assignment to teach students exactly the points YOU are trying to shed light on here? Maybe she gave the assignment expecting a good share of "differing but not necessarily 'hateful' music" planning to encourage discussion of ALL the issues. >But it IS >alright to hate Christians....sigh. ....decorum prevents me from going >there at this time. Unless you count the one person on the list that stated they find Christian music offensive and "hateful" because they feel it is segregationalist, NO ONE has in ANY way stated that it is OK to hate Chsristians or any other religious group. >To make a long story a little longer, rebel, yes, REBEL against the >assignment you were given and try spewing ...dare I say? ...HATRED of >the mindless task that you have been saddled with. If we dont >actually educate instead of flood our young brains with PC touchy feely, >then we should definately learn Chinese so we will understand our future >masters' orders OK, I'm not sure of your point here. Kids should think for themselves and not follow the "PC touchy feely" "Leftist Orthodoxy". That's like saying you let a dog go wherever it wants but you only give it enough rope to run around the yard. And in your goal to fight how hatred of a group is being considered acceptable as long as that group in in the majority, you encourage then to basically skip the assignment and just spew hatred of another issue. Not only is that rebelling without a cause, that's refusing to take issue with ANY cause. You actually prefer, in the grand scheme of all this, apathy above everything? >a schoolteacher that gives such an assignment , instead of >teaching mathematics , science , or better yet Chinese? Oh yeah. Teaching kids about social issues and the establishing and consideration of ethics and viewpoints is COMPLETELY unimportant.
