Here are my 5 funeral song picks, in no specific order: (I'll Stop the World and) Melt With You by Modern English - my favorite song of all time, plus the "melting" concept seems apropos for the whole death thing. (Don't You) Forget About Me by Simple Minds - yeah, seems kinda obvious, but I'm a product of the 80's, what can I say? Fly Away by POE - gotta have some POE - would be best if she was there to sing it. Prayers for Rain by The Cure - because I like it, and sounds funeral-ish to me. tie - In My Life by The Beatles or Should I Stay or Should I Go by The Clash - either to be sappy or funny... guess it would depend on the circumstances surrounding the funeral and how I would want people to react. Let's just say they aren't called "one hit wonders" for nothing. The concert was probably great if you were a huge fan of the band (I was surrounded by 30-35 year olds) but it sucked if you were only there for that one song. Which I was and of course they saved it till the last - I have to give props to them though, they have a sense of humor! For starters the story follows the same line that the father is not needed in any of the relationships in his life anymore (ie. work=got fired, wife=cheats on him, daughter=more or less hates him) and this causes the instability in his world which drives him into a mid-life/identity crisis, and of course he does die at the end. And on a side note if you listed carefully enough at the beginning the neighboor that had just moved out had the last name of Loman, and low and behold the main character in "Death of a Salesman" is....Willie Loman. But that's all fine and good, now I'll rant a little on EWS. For starters, I love Kubrick, awesome director and screen writer. I rented EWS, and took it back the same night. That three hours of my life was wasted, BUT the only reason that I thought that was because the film wasn't exactly what Kubrick intended. If you remember he sort of died BEFORE finishing the movie therefore his influence on the editting and whatever filming was done after his passing was not present. Granted the edittors had his notes on the film but that still doesn't make up for the man's vision or mind. So until we find a way to bring Kubrick's brain back and have him finish the film...I will put it on my "interestingly weird but not favorite" list. - -blah blah blah - -luke ______________________________________________ FREE Personalized Email at Mail.com Sign up at http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup ------------------------------ Date: 2 Jan 2001 20:10:44 -0500 From: meowkittie@gurlmail.com Subject: what the ddd dilio...? I respectfully point out that your facts are very wrong here. Stanley finished the visual cut completely as it's shown. He screened this cut to Warner Brothers and Nicole/Tom before he died. He said it was his best film. He also had reluctantly approved the digital alteration as he had committed to an R rated cut. If you need sources, email me off list. Only sound and music editing remained to be completed. Stanley was known to make minor edits after films after release, but not every one was re-cut. Who knows if would have changed it? But any change would have been very minor. EWS was the film he wanted. You are one of many that thought it was terrible. Your loss, not the loss for us that think it's one of his best. But I remind you of how many people disliked 2001 & A Clockwork Orange and the years later completely changed their minds. stephen www.xiveren.com "The eighth rule of Fight Club is: If this is your first night at Fight Club, you HAVE to fight " ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2001 21:28:05 -0800 (PST) From: Caleb Munro Subject: depressed albums The You May Not Be Dead Now, But If You Listen To These Guys Long Enough You Certainly Will At Least Want To Be Band: maybe its because i dont know stabbing westward but the second i read this portishead popped into my mind. i admit i only have Dummy but its the most depressing thing i have ever heard (at least as an album on the whole) ... toris Boys for Pele isnt far behind, except for the brief moments of anger and stronger emotions on it. while this funeral talk is mighty interesting, i really do believe, i have another idea for a category: Album Most Able to Help You Withdrawl from Suicidal Tendencies (aka Makes You Want to Live) -- dont know if thats a decent category, but its a worthwhile question. what makes an album have the power to help people overcome their depression? that power is pretty awe-inspiring to me, at least. and of course one consideration must be the fact that a suicidal person would put the album on in the first place, so you cant pick something power-hungry because if youre depressed its just not making it into the cd player. my vote: heres a couple. 'little earthquakes' by tori (sorry i cant be more creative, but it is something i would put in and it does inspire me a lot) 'tigerlily' by natalie merchant (has a good number of depressing and/or dark songs but is full of emotion that is cathartic IMHO) 'no need to argue' by the cranberries 'trickle' by olive 'marvin the album' by frente! (if you know them, you are a true music guru i must say ... why put it on? to find out who knows them, of course silly) caleb ===== "What I have to do is to see, at any rate, that I do not lend myself to the wrong which I condemn." - Henry David Thoreau Yahoo! I sit there and try to stare into the walls, or space, or try to make myself cry to purge whatever the hell it is I'm so truly upset about. I sing along, in my head and then aloud, seeing if that may trigger anything. Then after a while, it all sorta starts to seem ridiculous. I envision Jerry doing coke off a gold album in his piece-o-crap house in BFE outside of Seattle, or Layne wandering aimlessly thru the streets of Seattle, and I just think, "Bo y... and I thought *I* was the pathetic *&#$." I usually end up giggling like mad at EVERYTHING within 2 hours.
