MTV and VH1 are sibling networks, and their programming sort of levels out. MTV have the shows, non-music related programming and lifestyle stuff. VH1 is the music-focused channel. Unplugged was canceled because, despite its very good reception and popularity, it had run its course basically. (When you start to let EVERYONE do an Unplugged, it cheapens the quality of the really good episodes. Yes, there are many artists to emerge after its demise that would have been fitting, but so it goes.) They feel they basically made up for its removal by giving us Storytellers on VH1. Not the exact same premise, of course. Unplugged focused on the stripped-down accoustic performances of artists from all ranges of music, new acts to legends, usually featuring artists one would not usually hear either accoustic or with a live band, (such as the LL Col J episode.) Storytellers began as more of a show-and-tell piece. Older, established artists could talk about their work in between performances, accoustic or not, (but still usually more stripped down their recorded or typical live versions... more laidback in general.) They then changed the rules to bring in new artists, (I think the first non-legend to have an episode was Alanis Morrissette,) and further fill the void left by the demise of Unplugged. I miss Unplugged in that I love a solid accoustic performance now and then from solid accoustic musicians, but I like Storytellers in that, well, stories are told. Unplugged didn't have as much of the tales behind the songs and so forth, and it sure didn't have the question-and-answer segments, which can be great (as long as they don't pick yahoos out of the audience who as about things taht can be found in any FAQ, but I've yet to see that happen, now that I think of it.) It's just not possible to keep a good thing going on forever, because it will start to defeat and cheapen itself. I cherish and adore my copy of the LIVE and Alice In Chains Unpluggeds that I painstakingly taped and edited myself, and then made (if I may toot my own horn) copies of for many people. (OK, so they ended up releasing the Alice In Chains episode on disk... but dammit, I still maintain that their is a different asthetic to my version! lol) But to think that, by now, if the series had continued, they would have probably moved on to doing episodes with a bunch of one-hit wonders, it would really cheapen the good ole days and memories. OK, enough of my rambling on this topic..... KORi (who's on pain medication... please forgive typos, grammar, etc.) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Dec 2000 02:42:44 EST From: KoriG@aol.com Subject: Re: stay clear of MTV!! Video offers a completely new artistic medium to work with, both for the artist who creates the song, as well as the directors who make the videos. Subtle little nuances in the song can be accentuated and enhanced through clever use of video, and I don't think anyone can effectively deny that. >> Exactly. Videos, like any other form of entertainment, have their good and bad. For every classic novel written, there are going to be a certain number of dimestore trash novels out there as well. For every cinematic masterpiece, a slew of Adam Sandler flicks. (Oops. Hope I don't get hell for that. I loved "The Wedding Singer", honest! : ) Some artists have brilliant videos that are art in their own right, sometimes even if the song itself isn't up to par. Sure, the current state of MTV as it is today greatly limits us from seeing the quality videos, but in order to get the good, we must allow the bad to exist as well. The music needs to be out there in any form it can so people can get the chance to be exposed to it. MTV and VH1 deliver music to areas where people otherwise could not come across the music, if such radio formats do not exist in their area or the only place they can walk into and buy music is from Wal-Mart's oh-so expansive selection. So, it's not really a matter of whether Poe, or artists in general, need MTV persay. They just need to utilize whatever sources of exposure they can. Let me think. This would be a blast. This will sound cheesy at first, but hear me out. I'd probably want to hit a mall for at least a portion of time. When you cruise a mall with someone, and go thru all the various stores and watch all the different people, you get to learn a lot about them, like their taste in music, books, clothes, movies, and any other aspects of what they do for enjoyment. You also get to see how they interact with other people, whether it be a clerk ringing up an item they are buying or the lady who holds the elevator for us when we are hopping in. (A way a person shows, or doesn't show, gratitude for the smallest favors in day-to-day life tells you SO much about them.) I tend to like to waste away hours in music and book stores even if I'm not buying anything, but it's so much more fun to do so with other people so you can discuss common interests or turn each other on to new things. But seeing as doing this may be a little too much like "work" for either of these two, I wouldn't want to do so if they didn't. (I personally just find such places to be a sanctuary for me. I can spend virtually entire DAYS at book-and-music stores.) Of course, I would want to take them to any places in my city they would be interested in going to. Mind you, in Houston, I can't think of any GRAND sites in this city, but then, maybe people from other cities are interested in things I never think about. Or, if all else fails, I like to go on my tour of locations featured in the movie "Reality Bites". : ) I'd probably like to take her/him/them over to meet my grandmother, who, though American, had QUITE Polish parents. She would simply adore them, and I would actually get brownie points with them for this. (I know. Grandparents can get excited over the oddest things... but my grandparents mean the world to me, so any little thing I can do to make them happy, I try my hardest to do!) I'd like to go and just chill at a nice place to visit, preferably a park or some sort of place, where it's easy to visit and chat, but not too desolate and void of people. (I spend too much time cooped up at home as is, so although they are absolutely more than welcome in my home, I can't imagine them wanting to be shut up in this tomb any more than I do. And, like I said, I'm a people-watcher, so I like parks, zoos, museums, etc.) And since they are such cool, good-hearted people, I would want them to meet my mother at some point. Because, frankly, they would be two of the most normal artists I've ever introduced her to, and it would make her chill out a bit about my artistic tastes and social life. LOL And as the evening aproaches, I'm always up for live music if someone else is, and I know which of my fave haunts I'd like to hit. That's basically it. To be honest, I kinda cheated here. This is basically the formula for how I would like to spend a day with anyone I wanted to get to know better. (It I already knew them pretty well, I'd throw in going to a movie and coffee afterwards to discuss it, but since such activity doesn't really allow for much chit-chat, I don't like to do that right off the bat.) Basically, I'd want to make the most of the day, but not run them into the ground exhausting any of us. Maybe we could petition the other music channel for a program with the same basic concept as unplugged ... say "absolutely acoustic" (of course coming up with a creative title is not my forte) I know this OTHER channel is known for music in another decade, but maybe they would be interested in opening a door to the new millennium so to speak.
