(IMHO). Seriously, they are supposed to be a Music Television station. Are they? Only if you consider what they play on TRL as music. I admit I like Creed, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Korn...but that doesn't mean I want to see their video everyday. I especially don't want to hear from any of the teeny-bopper groups. Do they have other musical programs on MTV? Well, there's "After Hours", which comes on at like 2 in the morning. But the rest of their shows are stupid blame games and sex shows, and cartoons, and the Real World/Road Rules stuff. I mean, I like some of those shows, but i don't think they belong on a MUSIC CHANNEL. What happened to the music? VH1 is slightly better, in that it's programs have something to do with music...Pop-Up Video, Storytellers, Behind the Music...though i hear they're doing Behind the Movie now, and i just want to throttle the people who made that decision! All I want is a music channel that'll talk about music, and play videos!! From all artists, not just pop culture!!! UGH!!! Is that really so much to ask? I'll get off my soapbox now, but I'm going to go grumble in the corner... If we're talking strictly cash, here, which is a dangerous subject with so many people willing to go off half cocked about selling out, the highest grossing live show means very little, especially compared to sales figures for albums by the very people that you guys despise. So, if you look only at the monetary aspect, you can do well without MTV, but you can't do *well* without MTV. Now, if you're speaking from an artistic standpoint, then things are slightly different. Video offers a completely new artistic medium to work with, both for the artist who creates the song, as well as the directors who make the videos. Subtle little nuances in the song can be accentuated and enhanced through clever use of video, and I don't think anyone can effectively deny that. Plus, MTV has millions of viewers daily. Many of which watch MTV for more than just the half an hour it takes to watch their favorite show, or see who got number 1 on TRL. In one video play, mid-afternoon, on TRL, Making the Video, or otherwise, you can get your artistic vision displayed to more people than any live show can effectively present itself to. *And* you can do it with the added artistic flair as above. Do I think MTV is the pinnacle of music? Certainly not. The music and videos are more of the same old, same old these days, they don't play enough videos in the first place, and they tend to over hype their movies and shows too much. However, the idea is most definitely sound, and it can never hurt to get some more airplay, radio, video, or otherwise. - -- Brian Kallenbach E-mail: sasori@home.com [O] darkarchon@azraelproductions.com Undernet: Sasori [O] Chatnet: Angelfire AIM: Kindralas [O] ICQ: 21103806 http://members.home.net/sasori/ ------------------------------ End of angry-psychos-digest V5 #321 ***********************************
