If you have not seen this, get thee to a theater. It's really a very disturbing movie, and it's very real. It shows what addiction really does to you. The director, Darren Aronofsky, is such a talent. I look at movies and the way they were directed, and he's brilliant. I think they should show this to kids in school (high school, middle school). I'm never doing drugs again, EVER! Some scenes were so disturbing, especially the ending montage, that I had to lower my eyes to not see the screen, but it is an amazing movie, and I highly reccomend seeing it. The situation: my little brother was selling Girl Scout cookies. (There are obvious difficulties already.) So me and my sister and he started canvassing the neighborhood, barefoot, because it was summer, and realy gorgeously warm and wonderful. We kept running into mud, and just walking through, letting it squish between our toes and coat our feet and things. Anyway we were not having much selling success and we started talking about whose house in the neighborhood we could go to. And I suggested, "Oh, how about Poe?" "I already tried her," my brother replied. "But she loves the cookies so much, she only buys them at the supermarket, where she can get a whole lot at once." "Typical Poe!" But I was thinking, it would be a great idea for us to plan such parties for ourselves, and if Poe can show up and would like to, of course, the door is open for her. What's so bad about planning on hanging out with some like-minded buddies before or after her shows, even if she cannot join us? I can in NO way say she or her powers-that-be can or even want to attempt to plan such parties on the next tour, but I feel I can go out on a limb and say that if such parties are already in place, and conditions permit, there is a much better chance than if there was nothing going on in the first place. Sure, it's likely to be a complete longshot, but hey.... if we build it, she COULD come. Depending upon what they negotiate in their contracts, artists will have varying say in what a label can do with such recordings, and since some artists, (such as previously mentioned Ani and some other artists) own their own label and publishing, they are their own boss, so to speak, and they have the say. (This is one of the many reasons so many artists today are opting for the indie track, even if it does mean limited promotional funds and distribution. They'd rather have the greater upperhand than wider exposure or lower percentages. Again, it's not a matter of selling out or going for the cash. Some "unknown" indie artists make more than your gold-album selling acts, because if there is a buck made off them, more of those pennies go into their own wallets than into others. But it's not always the case.) Sometimes it's just a matter of choice. Some people have the business knack for all of the mess. Some just want to make their music, make a decent living, and go about their day. Poe spent the last five years strong-arming Atlantic for control so that, essentially, she won't have to do so again. Did she pave a path for others thru this battle? Hell yeah she did, even if that was her primary intention or not. She wasn't trying to be revolutionary though. She just did what she felt she had to do for the sake of her own career and her own work, just as Ani did in setting up her own label, or as Pearl Jam does in not making videos but maintaining a solid major label contract, and so on. To each artist their own. Atlantic's a funny label. They have some damn great acts that pull in some damn good money for them, but they really can jerk them around in a most supreme way. My name is Melissa & I'm a freshman at Indiana University of Pennsylvania where I'm studying journalism. Where I hang: I've lived in a suburb of Pittsburgh,PA all my life. My age: I turned 19 on October 7th...if only i live in canada :) First heard of Poe: I'm an old school poe fan.Hello was my favorite cd for many years and it still is one of my favs. It was because of Trigger Happy Jack and angry Johnny that started to be played on the radio and I will only buy a cd after I've heard at least 2 songs...so i ran out and bought the cd..and it instantly became a hit.I think the year the cd came out, we just got aol and I've had my Poe screenname ever since. Everyone thinks I'm named after the poet but I straighten them right out...and try to get them hooked..so it's all good. Other favorites: I'm very open to all musical genres..but i mostly stick to alternative. I'm a big Dave Matthews Band fan. And I love Canadian music like Sarah Mclachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk, Emm Gryner, Sarah Slean, Barenaked ladies,Our Lady Peace. I also like Godsmack, Everclear,Dido,Counting Crows, the corrs, eve 6,Limp Bizkit..etc... useless ramblings: Well..just that I'm really not sure why I never joined like 5 years ago...maybe i was busy?...I just don't know...oh well. oh yeah and I'm usually on instant messanger at school so if anyone ever wants to im me to talk about poe or anyhting else that's cool. Thanksgiving break was way too short :( Doesn't the Haunted cd rock??? I love it! I think Haunted and Wild are my favorite songs. I get them stuck in my head all day long. ok..off to pack to go back to college...hope everyone that lives in the US had a nice turkey day. bye!
