Actully the facts are the producers of Blair Witch were most likely approached by Poe's Marketing agent, probably atlantic marketing and played them the Haunted song and said hey this song was made for your movie.. Blair witch people said hey your right, that song rules.. The Money factor comes in that Poe is a artist, she has to make a living and earn funds to go on tour.. So Naturally she is not gonna just give her song up for free... It amazes me how cliched the term sell out has become and annoys me that those that jump on the i'm not part of the trendy sell out mainstream bands can be so ignorant and simply put prejudice.. It's just as trendy to only like unpopular bands as well.. Like it or not everyone can be placed into a trend.. There are mainstream bands that are not sell outs..Simply because someone gets a record contract and has some popular songs, does not constitute selling out.. Selling out is when the artist compormises their music, morales, integrity etc for the sole purpose of making money and gaining fanview ..That to me is a sell out.. Who knows maybe poe was the one that approached Blair Witch and said Hey my song would be perfect.. Fact that she got paid? Why should'nt she get paid? When asked about it..She might really mean what she said. What audacity to call someone a liar! Based on What? What track history of Poe makes anyone think she is simply a sell out artists who's only motive for writing and singing music is money?.... Poe is doing what she loves and making a living off it. If it happens that fame and fortune come her way cause of it,Great for her and us,cause that only means she'll be doing more albums & touring lots more.. No one calls the athletes that whore themselves out to commercial ads or whatever team will pay them the most millions, sell outs.. No one calls the movie stars that make millions for a movie sell outs.. These people also are artists and athletes that are doing what they love to do and fact that they make millions doing it.. Some of them are sell outs, but some of them are into it because they love what the do... "I take what I do seriously. I love it and I want to do well at it and work hard. Bravo to you!!! I was going to write a response to that email calling Poe a sell-out... but thanks to you I didn't have to do anything. You said exactly what was on my mind. Poe isn't a sell-out because she has a song in a movie... songs go in movies, someone has to sing them, why not Poe? Just because an artist has a song in a movie that doesn't make them a sell-out. My only really comment is this- I don't think "Haunted" is even on the BW2 soundtrack... so how can you sell out when your song isn't even on the soundtrack? I personally thought it was awesome that I heard a Poe song with all of my friends and the loads of others in the theatre, I think it's a good way for Poe to reach a diverse listening audience, not a way to sell out. (I thought that being a Houstonian at least sert me a little apart -- it's a major city, no cows roaming in my backyard or anything, never lived on a farm and was always 15 minutes from a mall.) I've despised country music since birth, and attacked country folk (whom I generally collectively referred to ALL as "rednecks" no matter what their station in life) as if I was virtually a member of the Black Panther party. (Actually, for a good ten years of my life, the only caucasians I associated with on any sort of regular basis were my relatives, and most of them I avoided like the plague.) But luckily, my horizons spanned eventually. I gave music other than R&B and rap a chance, (What a concept!) and even found out not all country-influenced musicians are hillbilly haychewers. (Spend a few nights hitting the clubs on 6th St. in Austin, TX to learn this in spades.) My new hobby as of the past couple of years? Finding extremely southern musicians who do extremely non-southern music. (Check out Fuel or my new faves, 3 Doors Down. These guys have the most ADORABLE Mississippi accents. Flames and comments welcome... As Tool has politely stated in its music, she sold out long before we heard of her. If she hadn't, most of her fans wouldn't know she exists. Let's be realistic. There's artistic integrity, and there's eating. There's making a statement, and there's putting a roof over your head. There's using your talent to please others, and there's putting your clothes on your back. All of these can coexist. The concept that someone "gets paid a lot" does not exclude that person from "making an artistic statement." In short, chill a bit. If she did it for the money, then she did it for the money. I'd respect her more if she actually did just say that if she did, but I'd like her music anyway, and would still buy her albums. And do I think she did it for the money? Not necessarily, I don't really care. I spend my 15 bucks to get a CD of music by an artist I enjoy listening to. Beyond that, what the artist does means little to me. - -- Brian Kallenbach E-mail: sasori@home.com [O] darkarchon@azraelproductions.com Undernet: Sasori [O] Chatnet: Angelfire AIM: Kindralas [O] ICQ: 21103806 http://members.home.net/sasori/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Nov 2000 21:48:31 -0800 (PST) From: raymond lew Subject: beautiful disaster hey i have a quick question...has anyone else noticed that the poe ball on the cover of haunted has two imperfections on it? a dent on the bottom right and a ridge on the top left. hmmm...maybe i just spilled something on my booklet =[ NPR: i got hit by a truck on wednesday. i was leaving the house of blues after the 311/zebrahead concert and this truck came by as i was crossing the street and hit me. i don't think it was going very fast, but i was still kinda suprised that i didn't get knocked over. i just got pushed back...my knees and my arm is sore, though. are you unbreakable? ...ray **************************************************************************** "are you ready for the truth?" --sammy j west coast angry psychos >> www.egroups.com/group/wcap the writings on the wall >> www-scf.usc.edu/~rlew **************************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Nov 2000 21:55:03 -0800 (PST) From: raymond lew Subject: ap regional facts capital: motto: song: nickname: colors: bird: flower: drink: ...ray ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Nov 2000 22:08:56 -0800 (PST) From: raymond lew Subject: flame on! re: poe/blair witch project sellout i think anything can be broken down to the "money" factor, so it's unfair to say that she's a sellout. why did poe do the soundtrack? money. why does she make records? money. why does she go on tour? money. why does she sell merch? money. why is she so generous to her fans? because they buy her albums, go to her concerts, and promote her music--money. i think the term sellout is only applicable when money is the primary or sole reason for doing a project. so of course, making "haunted" had a lot more value than just dollar signs for poe. as for the blair witch project...if she really hated the movie but still did a song for it, then i think that would be selling out. but if she said that she loved the ending and wanted her name associated with the piece, who are we to argue with her? peace not greed, ...ray **************************************************************************** "burn, baby, burn" =] west coast angry psychos >> www.egroups.com/group/wcap the writings on the wall >> www-scf.usc.edu/~rlew **************************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Nov 2000 22:24:55 -0800 (PST) From: raymond lew Subject: NPR: bon jovi sorry for the fifty separate posts...i just remembered something. is anyone going to see bon jovi at the forum this saturday? ...ray ------------------------------ End of angry-psychos-digest V5 #307 ***********************************
