It's awesome how many new fans POE is getting due to the new album, and that the media is paying at least *some* attention to it. Albeit, Dawson's Creek is not the greatest place for it ((IMHO)), but they have a habit of showcasing new or relatively unknown artists. And it's a lot better than nothing. I've noticed that *a lot* of new AP's have signed up recently, and a lot of people I've talked to remember 'Angry Johnny' and then they hear mention of a new album, and are like, "hey, I remember her," and buy the new album or dl some mp3's. APs in attendance, nice to meet you. The following long winded e-mail is my recap of my conversations with Poe last night. I typed this today instead of actually working. Word for word there may be slight inacuracies. To the best of my recollection the following is what transpired during my chit-chat. - ------------------------------------------------ Poe walked in the room and exclaimed "Hello Psychos!" After a few hellos she sat down beside me. "Hello" she said. My mind raced how could I ever respond to such witty repartee? "My name is Poe," she added. As if anyone in the room would need an introduction Timidly I said, "Hi, I am Dean" or did I say "Murmur, mumble, mumble, murmur"? She warmly shook my hand and replied "Hello Dean, Pleased to meet you sir" Poe then took a tour of our host's dwelling and deftly used chopsticks to eat a few pieces of sushi. - --------- Story 1 - The European Journey: While eating sushi she recounted a story of how she trekked from Rome Italy to Caan France, narrowly getting a ride from an Italian fellow after the French bus driver (I believe he was French - dean) declared he was on strike. As they arrived in Caan Poe's new found driver got in a fight with a local. As Poe was rushing to the stage the Italian driver was running to her being chased by the French Police all the while yelling "Poe Poe". It was an amazing to watch Poe weave this tale of humor and narrow escapes. She was very animated and spoke in the appropriate accents when speaking the words of her Italian and French friends. The story ends with Poe meeting so record label bigwigs and the Italian driver bursting in the room. Poe played it cool; no one got arrested. - --------- Story 2 - Poe means.. President of Earth - I guess Poe was also caught up in the election hubbub. She said she unfortunately did get a chance to vote this go-round and she seemed bummed. - --------- Story 3 - The 5-Year Journey After the sushi story telling session, Poe wandered back into the living room and sat on the sofa. At this time it was announced that now might be the best time to get autographs. So I promptly whipped out my Poe CD collection (Hello, Hello single, Haunted, Welcome to Woop Woop, Great Expectations, Loungapoluza, Strange Wind (forgot album name) and Rise and Shine. I removed the inner covers from the "Haunted" and "Hello" CDs. This lead us to a few conversations - The first being: I said "Good thing for the sound tracks that held me over while waiting for "Haunted" Poe replied "Well I have allot of extra material from this album, we recorded 43 songs so we have some good material ready for the next album" I mouthed silently "but 5 years between albums" in a tone that was mock giving her hell. Poe "Dean, it WAS NOT 5 years between albums" she continued "You have to include 2.5 years of a grueling tour schedule" I murmured " yeah can imagine must be tough, based on the Border's event, in a row Toronto, Pennsylvania, Washington, Atlanta" Poe added "a concert tour is even harder because of the amount of people and equipment involved" - --------- Story4 - Is Poe a Limp. Brittany. mixture only cooler? Producers from Hell! Poe talked about her many paths and obstacles in creating the album as she saw fit. Atlantic threw producers that in Poe's opinion didn't understand her style of music (actually she was much harsher '.couldn't produce a home movie. etc.), and had ideas on how to change Poe into Brittany/Limp/or other current pop performers but make a Cool version of the same -old same old. Poe says she stuck to her guns through budget denials, un-returned phone calls, stolen master recordings until the day came when Atlantic said "Wow that is a great album, Poe knows her shit!" - --------- Story 5 - Rolling through the sound tracks - Woop Woop So Poe how did you get in involved in "Woop Woop", I challenged Poe while grinning answers "The producer of the movie was a fan, when he called I asked what the movie was about after he described it I said Cool, and thought it would be cool to do the old Carousel tune (I'm just a girl)." Poe added, "we were deciding how to do the song. Country western maybe? No. " And she discusses briefly how they picked the current sound - --------- Story 6 - Rolling through the sound tracks - Rose.... I mention "Poe, I love the song A Rose is Rose" Poe says "too cool, did you know Mark wrote that song in the shower snapping his fingers" Poe yells across the room "Mark! Mark! Dean loves the song A Rose is Rose" Mark smiles (later Mark autographs my copy of House of Leaves with "A rose is still a rose.." - --------- Story 7 - Strange Wind - Now aptly re-named Strange Whim (Poe chuckles at my renaming) I ask, "Poe I only caught the ass end of the chat were you said you were mad about String Wind" Poe grimacing " I was really pissed we had recorded one version of the song and let them listen to the mood and tempo, then recorded a second version. The movie people without my permission re-mixed the 2 version, chorus of one then melody of the other. The part where. nah I won't say but if you listen closely you will notice that the song pieces don't match" - --------- Story 7 - Scary Braille While Poe was signing the book "House of Leaves" she retold the story of how a blind person was proof reading the Braille writing on Poe's page (pg. 423 in the soft cover) and when the lady was half way through reading the passage she raised her hands and exclaimed "spooky". Poe said this was quite scary. - --------- Story 9 - Poe on Napster I was surprised to hear Poe still taking a positive stance on Napster in general. She actually agreed with some one that over all it improved record sales. - --------- Story 10 - Bill Board charts - Mr Mojo Risin "Hey Hey Hey", Poe exclaims "The new album is on the bill board charts. It is 117th on the top 200 album sales." She further added, "This means that the record company will be happy and getting a tour together will be easier." - --------- Story 11 - Back Stage for Life Poe bantered around a cool way to say thanks for any one currently a AP member (did she mean mailing list or the AP web site list? Don't know - tbd). Picking a cut off date of right now. Anyone on the list would get a backstage for life pass. She said there were many many details to work out. Including pass construction and pass distribution. The cut off date would be final once the decision was made. Hope she means it and it was not a passing thought :) - --------- AP for life ! As for how music gets on the show, (basically most of the WB dramas work this way as well,) there is a marketing, "business-intended" way artists get on there. They tend to try to get new artists looking for exposure. (To have your song played while Pacey passionatly grabs Joey or Felicity pins Ben on the couch. Hell, that's better than a spin on TRL.) Another hook that really helps is if the artist is on a WEA label. (The congromeration of Time Warner-owned record labels, Warner Bros., Elecktra, and Atlantic..) Easier to obtain the rights, etc. Also, all the companies want to keep the exposure/incomes/etc. in the family. A music supervisor most likely doesn't have to go far to find material -- I'm sure that, just like radio stations and music stores and so forth, they get tons of CDs in their mailbox every day that they can just pop into their CD player in their office and shuffle around checking for stuff that sounds like it would fit. Sure, their personal tastes could give suggestions, or they could be working a deal with an A&R person to help them get exposure for the artist, or they could pick some new songs "burning under" the charts and just waiting to find their audience and break into the charts. It's always cool for a show or station to be able to say, "You heard it here first." And hey... Did any of you that don't usually watch the show check it out just to hear the Poe snipits? I rest my case. A friend of mine who works on "Dawson's Creek" is helping me get in touch with their music supervisor to submit product for consideration. Maybe I'll feel those powers-that-be out and find out if viewer suggestions affect music selections.
