My name is Steve, i'm 18 and i work for Yahoo (managing internet commerce sites). I found Poe back when Hello was released; i didnt have cable at home, but when i went on vacation, i quickly turned on MTV and was greeted by the video for "Angry Johnny". I made my mom drive to a K-mart in search of the CD, and i havent stopped listening to Poe since. My love for Poe goes so far, that i'm gonna cook up a lie on Friday to get out of work and go see her at Borders NYC! Hehehe. I was wondering, what Poe songs are out there that i dont know about? Other then the album tracks, i've heard: Padre Fear (where did this song come from?), Strange Wind, Today, Our Lips are Sealed, How Long (live), Jane Says (live) and various remixes. Are there any other B-sides? Other artists i like include: tori amos, madonna, paula cole, sheryl crow, placebo, sarah mclachlan, heather nova, liz phair, etc. If you want to know a little bit more about how my mind works (careful, its a confusing path!), then check out some of the crazy sites i've cooked up. She said that the environment is "pretty hostile to chicks right now." It's not like '95, when all the Angry Young Women were the toast of the town. So, basically, don't expect to hear her on any major radio stations anytime soon. That's okay, though. History has shown that good music can stand on its own, without the help of the radio dickheads. By the way, Poe really is a wonderful woman, and I'm glad to have met her and Mark. Inside of five minutes, you feel like they're your best friends. Are there any plans for an NYC get-together?? If so, when and where?? ~ Steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Oct 2000 12:02:05 -0500 From: "KyL the Paladin" Subject: Re: Radio Stations Aps, As part of the industry, I have to sadly concur with Crissy's comment. The industry has gone a lot harder and female music is rapidly going back into the shadows. Most of the alternative stations that helped break POE in back in '95 and '96 are now long gone. Stations like mine are now playing crap like Korn and Limp Bizkit. The only female musicians scoring big are on the sickly sweet pop stations. It is a real bad time for female muscians with talent. I am told by folks in the know that the tide will turn again soon but the question is how long our current favorite rock girls will remain a factor. I have watched a lot of really good musicians either call it quits or take long vacations because their albums just didn't sell. Then there is the LABEL problem. Atlantic hasn't been giving the album any push in the radio world (at least not with any of the big New Rock stations around the country). My MD and APD didn't even have copies of the album until I burned them ones off of mine. The fact that POE is coming around next week has barely even been mentioned to us. I don't quite understand what is going on with the label but the lack of attention was enough for me to directly ask the regional AR about the other night. He assures me more is coming but it may be too little too late. The third thing that will hurt POE is the lack of re-mixes being pushed. Most of the real success stories from HELLO were because of the brilliant re-mixes (both for clubs and for radio). The single Walk the Walk mix for radio isn't bad but having more choices would have improved its chances. I have tried and tried to get POE added to the rotation but for now, the best I have been able to do was get her featured on our new music show next sunday. Forgive the rant. I am frustrated that as brilliant as POE is, I can't help her get on my own station!!! Take care... And I don't know if they thought a Halloween release would be a good promo gimmick with the album theme and all, but with a release that would OBVIOUSLY be fanbased-driven, (if only for the mere fact that the label ain't doin' shit to back it and never PLANNED to,) pushing the release back and making the fans wait so long was sooo NOT a good idea. The fans care about the music. The album hit the net, the cat has been out of the bag for months. Oh, of course everyone wants to go out and actually buy the CD, that's not the point. Their handling of this release will do absolutely NOTHING to garner new fans. The money wasted on Electric Entertainment's "services" is just going directly down the drain. Gee! What have the done so far? Bring us info we either already know, or could have passed along for free and MUCH faster. Hijack mailing lists and chat rooms already long established before they even knew who in the hell Poe was. For the most part, artists realize who make their careers - their fans. (Duh.) My name's Mary; I just turned 18 last Tuesday, and I live in a rather uneventful town in South Florida ((we don't even have a freakin' mall; we just have a Wal-Marts ::rolls eyes::)). I first heard Poe in probably '96 when 'Angry Johnny' and 'Hello' had radio play. Now, I'm having the same problem, it seems, as everyone else in attempting to get "Walk The Walk" played. There are, honestly, no female-fronted "alternative" bands that get radio play anymore. Now, interesting things about me ... I listen to a wide variety of music, that, as a whole, doesn't fit into any particular genre. I listen to Stina Nordenstam, The Muffs, Seven Seconds, Letters To Cleo, Portishead, Dot Allison, Our Lady Peace, Ruby, Josh Rouse, Plumb, Green Day, Garbage, Black Sabbath, Aqua, Tool ... etc. ... the list really doesn't stop. I'm in a "interesting" band, called Where The Fruitbats Live ((this is what kind of name I get for letting an over-imaginative 15-year old pick a name)), which is electronica/metal/trip-hop. This mixture comes from the fact that my bandmates *all* like Eminem *and* Blink 182 *and* Portishead *and* Tilt ((all guys)). We half made a remix of 'Hello,' with me on vocals ((my friend is convinced I sound like Poe)), which isn't that bad, except it's not complete. *completely useless fact* gay men seem to flock to me. I'm called Momma Mary, and *everyone* is my kid, since I take care of them *all*. And that was a whole bunch of information that was probably more than any of you needed or wanted to know about me. I planned on it, but my computer is being a pain in the butt.. I gave up a lot of fetures of my video card for the stability of Win2k so I can record stuff straight to the computer reliably anymore. :( ANyways, I'd like to get a copy of this up in the ARchive. If anyone is planning on digitizing it, please let me know. If not, could someone send me a video, and when I reformat and get win98 installed on here along side win2k, I'll toss it up.. Thanks.. :) Ed Hunsinger ed@poe.org http://divinity.relic.net - -----Original Message----- From: owner-angry-psychos@smoe.org [mailto:owner-angry-psychos@smoe.org]On Behalf Of VR5SBloom@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, October 31, 2000 6:24 PM To: angry-psychos@smoe.org Subject: Craig Kilborn *tonight* Remember that Poe is on the Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn tonight, on CBS. Check tv.yahoo.com for your listing. You will probably need to look at Wednesday's listings to find her, and set your VCR for Wednesday morning too. Letterman may run late, so I would set the VCR for a little later than the specified ending time, just in case. - --Michele ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Oct 2000 23:15:07 EST From: GabriKn@aol.com Subject: Re: NYC Party Tomorrow Nothing ensured, i need to know where. All of you who downloaded the album are losers :) I'm not too happy with Poe's makeup on the cover but what can you do? There's not even a stylist credited whom I can blame, although everyone else sure has been credited. Two pages of credits and thanks?? That crazy Poe. OK I'm going to listen now... First off, where the hell's my CD?? I go through all the trouble of pre-ordering it online, and I can't even get it on the release day. Argg! I couldn't be at the 2:00 one b/c of school, and I went ahead and said I could work that day, and now there's one at 7! And I can't get out of work b/c I've already gotten out once, and I'm going to need this Sunday off so I can visit a college, and I've only been working there a week! GRRR! It seems the only way I'm going to get to see Poe is if she comes to my house! Hey!.........Nah, I doubt it. Oh, and since I'm ranting, I have a paper due tomorrow that I haven't started, and it's 11:36 at night. Teehee. Ok, now I'm done. Ranting and raving, ~*~Cara~*~ Love, you know what love is? Many people buy with the impression they will RECEIVE their CDs on the release date, but all your doing is reserving a copy to be shipped as soon as possible. Perhaps you will get them a bit earlier than if someone had ordered it, say, a week ago and selected general ground shipping, but I bet probably not. Oh, and btw, ordering it straight from Atlantic's site doesn't make it get to you any faster than CDnow either. Kinda makes you wonder why ya bothered, huh? "Then what's so special about advance ordering a CD?" Well, if it's one of those flyin-off-the-shelves-like-Playstation2-or-GNR's-"Use Your Illusion", it helps, but unfortunately not in a Poe situation. But seeing as it was released on a Tuesday, early in the week, a good number of early sales, sales early enough to be registered as "first week sales", can really help make an impression if they are significant. I often find the best way to describe what something is is by stating what it isn't. Therefore, I'd call Poe's music "Damn great pop music for people who like their pop music from adults who actually created it themselves." lol Or tell them, "Well, she ain't country or metal, if tht helps any." : ) KORi ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Nov 2000 01:24:45 -0500 From: "Rusty" Subject: NPR: Jennifer Nettles Band - tour dates once again, i am asking for you all to go check out this new unsigned artist!!! she has been nominated for the "Mars Music: Big Deal, Best Unsigned Band in America" go check out the nominee's and vote for your favorite: http://bigdeal.marsmusic.com/ check out http://www.jennifernettles.com for mp3's and videos, and further tour info. they are a great live act... if you get the chance, check them out on tour before the end of the year!!! 11/02 - Birmingham, AL - zydeco 11/03 - Nashville, TN - the exit/in 11/04 - Black Mountain, NC - black mountain music hall 11/09 - Gainsville, FL - brick city 11/11 - Columbia, SC - new brookland tavern 11/17 - Auburn, AL - supper club 11/25 - Augusta, GA - soul bar 11/30 - Statesboro, GA - blind willie's 12/01 - Athens, GA - 40 watt 12/02 - Atlanta, GA - variety playhouse (benefit show) *please bring 2-3 cans of food for the Atlanta food bank* 12/08 - Columbia, SC - elbow room 12/09 - Chapel Hill, NC - go studio room 4 12/14 - Douglas, GA - martin civic auditorium (special holiday show) 12/15 - Columbus, GA - uptown tap 12/16 - Black Mountain, NC - black mountain music hall (special holiday show) 12/21 - Decatur, GA - eddie's attic (special holiday show) - -rusty rusty@poe.org ******************************************************************* Jennifer Nettles Band: http://www.jennifernettles.com ******************************************************************* Poe: http://www.p-o-e.com HAUNTED: coming 10.31.00 http://www.poe.org ******************************************************************* NOW OPEN: http://www.rustyisdabomb.com ******************************************************************* ------------------------------ End of angry-psychos-digest V5 #280 ***********************************
