Having troubles with my roommate in college, and coming down with a virus that just didn't want to go away, I visited a local used music store (Haffa's, Court Street, Athens, OH) and picked up a copy of a cd called "Hello" by an artist named Poe. I had heard a couple of the tracks and thought it was definitely worth the risk to purchase at the low, low price of only $1. A few days later, having listened to the cd non-stop throughout my daily life, I searched for more information about the artist on the Internet. It was then that I stumbled upon www.poe.org . Through exploration on poe.org, I joined the ranks of the Angry Psychos (www.angry-psychos.com) , and frequently participated in rousing discussion in the poe.org chatroom. Within a matter of months, I had left college due to illness, resumed working in retail back at home, but still had my new friends at poe.org. In early 1997, the Angry Psychos had their first "meeting" in Las Vegas. Vegas@poe.org had people fly in, drive in and walk in from across the country. I couldn't afford to attend that event, but soon afterward, inspired by the Vegas trip, a small group of East Coast psychos banded together. Richmond (HotelOrgy)@poe.org soon became a reality. Thanks to some amazingly generous new friends from Buffalo, New York, I made it to that event. For the first time, I experienced what poe.org really was. A gathering of people, from diverse cultures, from many different backgrounds, sharing in their admiration for an artist's work. And, after the festival show in Richmond, Virginia, Poe gave the Angry Psychos something back as well. Later in the evening after the Richmond show, which also featured Sneaker Pimps, Sponge, Moby and many other bands, Poe arranged a show at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. Granted it was a bit of a drive to get to the show, but the night was definitely for the fans. Surrounded by my new friends at that particular show, I met the woman who I eventually became my best friend and love of my life. I shared a second Poe concert with great friends, and felt even more bonded to these people. After playing a set that included new songs and old, Poe took time out to sing Happy Birthday to the man that in part brought us all together that day. Jarrod Kniff, who discovered Poe while working as a radio DJ, and was one of her first supporters, gave Poe and her fans the web presence Poe.org. Without Poe.org's influence on my life, I would have never met any of the amazing people I have encountered in the past 4 years. I would have probably never taken the opportunity to see Poe and her band live in concert. I would have never discovered Mark Z. Danielewski's amazing novel, House of Leaves. And most importantly, I would have never met the woman who I hope to spend the rest of my life with. Yesterday, Jarrod put poe.org on hiatus. A few years ago, as an April Fool's joke, I created a website documenting that Poe was dead. I never imagined a day that Poe.org would be dead. Granted, there is a new web presence at www.p-o-e.com , which has some amazing visual and audio content. Granted, Jarrod has moved on in the past few years and has a lot more going on in his life that is not related to poe.org. But, without poe.org, where would the Angry Psychos be today? Jarrod Kniff's poe.org was the beginning that brought the Angry Psychos together. I will always be thankful to him for that, and will be one of the first to support him in any way I can possibly. Poe.org is not dead, as Jarrod puts it. It is being reborn. Soon, there will be an updated Angry-Psychos.com, which will archive the tales not only from our early 1997 events, but also the new events as they unfold. It will be a nice complement to the new www.p-o-e.com , and something as Angry Psychos we should all be a part of. Right now, it's coming soon.... www.p-o-e.com and the Electric Artists Poe Online Street Team are currently being viewed by some Psychos as a threat, or as an enemy to our "fan club". I would like for each of you to think about that for a moment. P-O-E.com is being updated almost on a daily basis, by people that are constantly in touch with the label and probably Poe herself, judging by the links page. I don't think that it would be fair to ask Jarrod to take the time to call Fishkin Entertainment or Atlantic Records all of the time. As far as the "Online Street Team", there are plenty of other bands who have similar promotional "teams". In fact, if you visit the Electric Artists street team website, you will find a long list of other artists. I don't believe events like today's Street Team chat are being held to defame #Poe or poe.org, but to continue to generate hype for the new album. I don't think Electric Artists are doing anything "wrong" by not hosting it at #Poe. If you've been to #Poe, chances are you are already a fan of the band. If you don't know a thing about Poe, and Electric Artists sends out hype for a chat at a "neutral" host like TalkCity, you could be a TalkCity regular who "discovers" Poe. I don't think EA is trying to kill the Poe chats or the Angry Psychos mailing list.
