[snip] Even among friends who would otherwise recognize a statement dripping with sarcasm if it was spoken aloud, often they will NOT recognize sarcasm when presented with the text format. Everyone on this list has been exposed to it, used it or been "tweaked" by it at some point in the past or will be in the future. Disclaimers aren't necessary, unless you want to make absolutely certain that everyone gets it. But then again, isn't that part of the fun in using sarcasm? Forgive me for being observant. I rarely post anything on the AP list; I simply read it to remain informed, to find other interesting artists, or to laugh at stupid arguments. One thing I find rather irritating, though (and I hope I'm not the only one thinking this) is that so often rather than replying to an individual, people decide to send their insult-filled (or otherwise) response to the entire Psycho ward. It appears to me to be blatant attempts at looking like a smartass to everyone who reads it. There are some cases where I understand if someone hits a "reply all" button, but when the subject is purely personal or between two people, it is far from necessary to make us all continually click the Delete button. I know, a penny for my thoughts; that's all they're worth. -Rebecca. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Exploration B brilliantly establishes the psychic environment on which the rest/most of the album is set. It starts out with something everyday, a phone call. But the narrator _sings_ her message in an almost delirious, detached tone, which simultaneously moves the landscape away from the "real" world. The juxtaposition (a paradigmatic word ;) of the real and unreal form of synthesis of realities, which is most commonly depicted in the human psyche. So, even though it's a shorty, Exploration B is a goody. Maybe Pink Floyd did the phone call thing first, but Poe makes it her own device. Haunted. There's a ton I'm going to be missing. Krod Knid told me something real cool, in that the ad lib part, "Ba da pa pa," sounds like the Old World (Euro) way of saying father, "pa PA". Of course, the album's about Poe's dad, who comes from the Old World. There's too much here, I can't describe it right now. Something about being oppressed/haunted (choose your own word - -- heh, interactivity!) by the ghost of a loved one. Hamlet-ish, at least superficially. Control. I think of it like Poe violently breaking away from the control of the tyrant-father. Her voice is real defiant, but that eventually causes more trouble. I don't really want to bring up the following cos I'm focusing on daughter-father relationship, but the line "I got your pawns and bishops and rooks in the palm of my hand" is a bit phallic. Leaving out the phallic aspect, those pieces are also emblematic of various forms of male (re: patriarchal/fatherly) domination. Not a virgin is pretty similar in its themes, although in a more sexual way. Plus, it's more about rebelling against authority, whereas Control is almost like the coup de main is already finished, or actually, maybe the narrator is wrong in Control; she only _thinks_ that she's in charge. That's as much as I can do for now children. It's a good idea, I know. But it doesn't work. Lee "Do your dreams come true?" Once again our mistress has show to us her appreciation of music with such a wide variety of styles, and yet at the same time she mixes it in with her own unique blend of melody. This is what I always loved about Poe, how much as a musician she actually appreciates music on whole and how she expresses it to us. I've missed Poe so much. Its been just about four years since that night at toads, every day that draws closer to haloween just makes me long for her even more. I'm looking forward to the next few months as our mistress returns and changes the world yet again ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Sep 2000 22:57:51 -0500 From: Tony Cusumano Subject: *** WWW.P-O-E.COM *** hello pSyChOs! www.p-o-e.com is now open...
