It was awesome! 328 was one of the best places to see the coolest shows. I had heard Poe on the radio, bought the album, and now had an opportunity to see her live! I left work early that day and went to church to invite a friend. The friend I originally intended to take didn't want to go even though I was going to buy the tickets. So I took a different friend. It was the first time I crowd surf, stage-dived, and the only time I've gotten to hold a crowd-surfing singer. I have lofted the Mistress of Groove! I got dropped on my head on my 2nd crowd surfing attempt, right on a concrete floor. I was having such a good time that I didn't feel any pain until I got home. The friend I took still thanks me to this day, It was the first time he had heard Poe, and he is now a dedicated fan. The friend who rejected me hates himself still. It was the best and most memorable concert of my life. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 09:38:13 +0200 From: "Jorrit Harssema" Subject: Re: preordering Hi, > I think that cdnow, and most online stores, will ship their merchandise > early so that it arrives on the release date. About the party: Keep in mind that she'll be having her party in LA probably no earlier than 9pm PST which is 12am EST. The web cams are a cool idea but with the time zone differences that could make things a bit awkeward. About the album: Well, I have to say I think that's an easy out. Where ever a person draws their influences from they shouldn't sound "like" those influences. They still need to find their own voice if they're to be taken as a serious artist. Sure they can fall into the same genre, tackle the same issues, whatever, but they still need their own voice. Otherwise, while they may have a lot of talent or drive, they're at best an average artist. To be great they have to bring something original and unique to the stage or the canvas or the page. Someone mentioned it could be deliberate. That's fine. It's certainly a valid technique to referrence someone else's work or style. But it still has to be done with your own voice. She does this on several parts of the album, maybe deliberate, maybe not. If you check out "Exploratoin B" you'll hear what sounds like a mellotron in the background when the answering machine picks up. Very "Strawberry Fields". I love it. It's subtle and clever and evokes a very specific response. But, "Exploration B" in its entirety is almost an exact copy of "The Wall" where they used phone calls, unanswered lines, etc to evoke a certain mood. It's too obvious, too distracting and gets in the way of an original message. The whole album is very "The Wall"-like, and it makes sense especially with relation to "House Of Leaves" but it's not very origianl. My point is that I don't *want* to label her as anything except "Poe" but I don't think the album supports that. I think the a lot of the album does sound like various other artists and not a unique performer (poe). I think that's unfortunate because the "Hello" album didn't sound like any other band and *did* sound very much like Poe. As for labeling her, I think she's the only one who's doing that. Again, that's only parts of the album. "Could Have Gone Mad", "Lemon Meringue", "Haunted", and others do let "Poe" come through. That was my origianl point. The album is good. Not great. I think it's unfortunate that most people have the artistic position that "everything is great". There's a reason for and a need for discrimination. Without it everything, the beautiful included, becomes worthless. Marking everything as great attempts to negate a value system which is an essential and, really, unavoidable part of any rational relation of phenomena. There *is* a lot of good art out there, but there isn't that much great art.
