Know where most of the money goes and who jacks up the price? The promoters. Then the venues. The promoters, for the most part, dictate the price. Especially when it's a well known band. I remember when the Stones came through Boston a couple of years back. Ticketmaster bent over and kissed the promoters ass. Anything they said goes. Including ticket prices. Then the venues, when they see a band coming that will sell out for sure, they charge the promoters a larger fee for renting the venue, so the promoter wants to pocket X amount of dollars ups the price so that they can pay the band, the overhead and the venue and still come away with X profit. Next largest cut goes to TM which is usually covered in the service charges which may tack on an annoying "added fee" but in comparison to the average cost of the tickets, it's not a large cut. And some of that money goes to outlet that sells the ticket if it's sold at an outlet. Promoters tend to be gready bastards. Big companies are just in business to make money. The worst part is if something goes wrong... like Flava' Flav' gets a venereal disease and the show is cancelled, guess who gets to keep their fees? Yep, that's right. They make $12.50 a ticket for a show that NEVER HAPPENED. No refunds, nothing. I'm speaking from experience. Fuck them. The only way to kill them is to avoid them at all costs. Was: Haunted... Like I said, they're a monopoly, they treat their employees poorly, I'm not defending them. All I'm saying is it's the promoters and venues who really set the ticket prices. The service charges *do* add up and for cheap shows are often half the cost. I have no problem if you want to bad mouth TM, but you should at least be aware of the facts and badmouth the others involved as well, the promoters and the venues. What they do just happens out of the public eye where as ticketmaster is very much in it. Buying through the box office is still using ticketmaster, though maybe less the service charges. The box office still uses not only Ticketmaster's equipment but also the ticketmaster database network. See, what you folks who are upset don't seem to understand is that before ticketmaster, unless you lived pretty much next door to the venue you would never have seen half (or more) of the shows you've seen in your life. Every onsale would be like the star wars movie where people camped out for days, sometimes weeks, before hand. If anybody here has gone to a show and had great seats, and I mean GREAT seats, it's either because you know someone or because Ticketmaster makes it possible for *anyone* to get them, not just the people who live near the venue (who before TM would hold all the good seats for themselves to sell) or could afford to make the expensive trips to the venue. The fact that you had the opportunity to drive to hollywood to buy the tickets at the venue itself only proves that you have the time and means to do so. Not everyone is so lucky as you. Think of all the people out there who don't have cars, are too young, can't get off work. They'd never see a show. Yes, $3.50 on a $6.00 ticket is silly. Most of this really makes sense in terms of larger venue or arena shows, but you may want to spend some time counting your blessings too. In parts fo the world $3.50 is more than some people earn in a month after 7 days of hard labor. The fact that we have the chance to debate the *extra* cost of ticket to a show is a luxury in itself. It's also pretty pitiful so I'll drop it. - -t On Tue, 8 Aug 2000, Di wrote: > > I don't care if they're not to blame or whatever, buying from ticketmaster > is a total ripoff!!!
