I've got pretty crappy seats (section 106), but I'm still pretty happy to be going at all. Wondering if any other psychos will be there... - --pix ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2000 20:12:20 EDT From: VR5SBloom@aol.com Subject: MZD's SF book reading 2/3 He then went to sign stuff. Ben stretched, his back hurt which was why I made him film it so I could avoid it ;) I waited a while so I could just talk to Mark and not hold people up, and had Ben keep filming. One person had printed out the whole online book; another had already read it three times. The store had paperbacks, the hardcover, and their own little trading cards of MZD. They make trading cards of each author that reads there and posts them in a gallery. You should be able to see MZD's autographed one at www.booksmith.com at some point. The dude who had introduced MZD and was very enthusiastic about the book let me have their full-page ad of the reading that was hanging in the front window. I am ever the swag whore ::P Waited for everyone to finish, then got my book signed. MZD signs with just the date and a big Z, or if you want it personalized he draws this corner of a room, with a couple symbols, and writes your name and a short message. All in blue of course. They played his 9 minute CD over small speakers but I doubt anyone really noticed, it was too far away from where he was signing. I guess this CD was never really released, but you can still download it at http://www.goldenworld.com/hol/Songs/ Talked to him as he signed mountains of paperback and hardcover books for the store... - - The HOL website is going to be taken apart, because they don't like it right now. The message board will stay up. Eventually it will be Poe's and MZD's shared site. Do note that the link to the book on iuniverse has been taken down. - - Asked about the spoken word CDs. It is not the same as the 9 minute one, and it hasn't really been released either, though I guess some of you have gotten it. I gave him my address and he'll send it to me, and said I can MP3 it and share it. He said it would be on the site eventually but of course it'll be really slow. - - Asked about the videos with the live footage...he said that he made them for Angry Johnny and That Day. I asked for copies and he just laughed. ;P Of course, you can see the footage in the band version of the Hello video, and as a visual for Control in Apocalypse, which includes parts of the original Hello vid ;P - - end part 2 - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2000 20:12:14 EDT From: VR5SBloom@aol.com Subject: MZD's SF book reading 1/3 OK, because smoe hates me I'm breaking up this post. If you get the long messages twice, too bad ::P Report of MZD's 4/4 book reading in San Francisco... I dragged along my buddy Ben, who hasn't heard Poe's music and had only heard me babble about the book and seen some of the weird formatting, so I could get in the commuter lane, not pay bridge toll and so I wouldn't be wandering around Haight by myself at 11 at night. He was happy though ::P We got there, found a plug for the camera, and waited. A brother and sister found the mic and started playing with it, despite a grumpy dad. Eventually the bookstore staff got back there and asked them to stop. (The reading was set up in the children's area.) Ben recorded it in amusement. Played with the video camera, found the fun settings, widescreen/mosaic/sepia/b&w...we decided it would be cool to film it widescreen ::P There was a display of the front cover, about as big as the old Poe promo poster of her on the stairs, set up behind where Mark would stand. You can't tell from the graphic on iuniverse's site, but the cover has a floorplan of the halls and stairway superimposed/raised on it. A few people were sitting down, looking through the book. I got a hardcover copy. There ended up being 12 or so people there. Saw MZD walk by with the bookstore staff, and they went into a back room. Waited... Came back out a while after. This dude introduced MZD, Ben started fussing then recorded most of it. MZD has nice bright blue hair, much more vivid than in the Newsweek pic, was wearing a black long-sleeved shirt. Brooding artist? ;) He started off with a passage, "That Place" (That Place, That Day...) then said he'd be a docent for the book...said he recognized my Rochester shirt (thanks Erik ;P)...then read more passages. Ended with a Q&A...talked a little about Poe and Josh Clayton-Felt, about the song they did about one of the scenes in the book, and how the new CD would fit with the book. Talked about the cinematic grammar of the book, as opposed to calling it concrete poetry (? that was from the bookstore dude), and said some stuff about John Cage. He said that at some point, he wants the book to have purple and red in it, not just blue, and an actual braille plate for the braille in the book. Some people are considering so someday we'll hafta buy yet more editions ;P No other work around right now, he wants sleep ;P - - end part 1 - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2000 20:12:35 EDT From: VR5SBloom@aol.com Subject: MZD's SF book reading 3/3 - - The news you've been waiting to hear...Poe's new CD. I asked when it would be released, and he asked where would the info go. I said uhh...he asked if it would go to the psychos, and I said not if you don't want it to, and he was like no I want them to know! So I was like cool... The new CD will be called Haunted, and will have 16 tracks, Explorations 1-16. I brought up the track listing that was posted and he said, I saw that! It blew me away...I explained to him that it was an April Fool's joke Erik posted. (Gotcha Jarrod robby and sp00k ;) Still no set release date, June or July, Poe's still mixing it. No art done yet. If you haven't read the book yet, get it...get a coupon at www.cashsavingdeals.com and get a hardcover. There's irony, horror, humor...very good, and I really haven't read a book in a long time. I can't really compare it to any of those famous books since I've never read any of 'em. - - Ben had an insight on blue...house is blue...hair is blue...the house is his head... Figured out all the incarnations of the book: - - First edition was published online, to MZD's friends. Got passed around a little, sometimes people have printouts of it that they have him sign. This original version isn't around online anymore. - - First printing of the hardcover was signed, but 500 pages were lost, torn in processing...some are signed X, some signed JT. Different ISBN. - - Second printing of the hardcover isn't signed. I have one of these, of course it's signed now. - - There are color typos on the first and second printings, the house in Random House is in white on the back jacket, and black on the inner back flap. Third printing will supposedly fix it. - - He mentioned an interview for PlayTV he had done earlier in the day, which uses a blue screen, so it looked like he had no hair. He didn't mind ;) Alex Bennett interviewed him, Bay Area and Tape Tree 2 listeners will recognize the name, and I was quite surprised to find out about it. Unfortunately I missed it, since I didn't know it was on ::( You can see a blurb about it on www.playtv.com - - Mentioned that I read the book online, he wanted to hear about it. Said I read it while supposed to be programming ;P Asked if we used a Powerbook, we were like no...later it occured to me that it would be much easier to read upside-down parts on a laptop! - - Asked what he was reading right now, he said some stuff but you'll hafta watch the tape, don't feel like checking right now. - - Asked him where to send the video, he said "You have 30 minutes of me reading looking down!" and not to worry about it. - - Said he'll be back, with Poe. - - He forgets what the Z is. So that's the adventure, Ben and I got some chicken super nachos and headed home. If you'd like a copy of the video, feel free to e-mail me. It'll be the cost of the tape and postage, or a blank and postage if you want to do it the expensive way ;O It has this clicking sound throughout, my lens moving...but it looks pretty good. - --Michele * My mind is a glazed doughnut * - Insecto, "Bakery Of Life" * If I am silent, I am not real If I speak up then no one will hear * - Garbage, "Silence Is Golden" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2000 21:55:23 -0800 (PST) From: Dark Cloak Subject: The Book Hello, Well, My situtation is, I'm broke, but I still want to read the book. It would take too much work and planning to go to the libary. So I'm asking if anyone could either send me a link to where I could find a copy of it online.
