think it's just because my ass didn't want to be

there is reasonable artistry in rap as in there is reasonable artistry in 
other forms of music; it is the popular conception of artistry that 
continues to excludes black artists from mainstream acceptance of their art 
as plain art.

listen to wutang. i didn't like 'em back way back when, but now is a 
different matter. the rza can assemble a very minimalisticly intricate song, 
and masta killa's rhymes incorporate the classical poetic devices of 
enjambment and off- and para-rhyme.

if hardcore wutang style is too much, try the slightly diluted tastes of 
amp2. method man and krs-1 processed thru the prodigy and goldie, 
respectively, and an exceptionally beautiful track courtesy chuck d.

of course, these songs are primarily acceptable to the non-hiphop enthusiast 
because they come under the guise of electronica, a lot of which is an 
appropriation of hiphop, either produced or consumed by white folk. then 
again, one can argue that it isn't white appropriation of black music, it's 
acknowledgement and acceptance of diverse musical styles.
