The Blair Witch Project was an excellent movie. Not so much because it was an inherently super-great movie(which it wasn't, in my opinion), but because it was so different from the crap they're calling horror these days. Don't get me wrong, I think it was a well done, interesting movie, and I enjoyed it a good bit. But the fact that it was -different- increased my enjoyment of the movie ten-fold. I saw it the Sunday after it was nationally released in a large theater near here. As I exited the movie, I heard people grumbling about "never seeing the monster" and "no special effects". Those grumbling where mostly army jarheads, teenybopper dolts and rednecks. Personally, I liked the lack of special effects and the fact that you didn't see the monster(or witch, whatever you want to call it) One of the reasons, I think, that I enjoyed the movie so much was the setting. I spent the first few years of my life in a place like Burketsville(the town I lived in was called Burnsville. Strange, eh?). After my parents separated, I still spent every summer out in the middle of bum-fuck nowhere running around in the woods with no civilization(aside from the crazy old lady in the trailer three miles down the dirt road) for nearly thirty miles. In retrospect, that's some scary shit! I've been lost in the woods, with abandoned houses and weird shit happening, and it scared me at the time. In retrospect, after seeing Blair Witch, it REALLY scares me. So, go see the movie if you haven't. Its good, its fun. Just see it with a couple of friends. During the day. (have I posted about this here yet? Or was that another list? man I need to unsub from a few of them.. opened my box to 350+ emails in less than 24 hours.. :P) Anyways.. I like the movie, I like the way it's done, and I like they way that it isn't the cliche horror film type of movie. Whether or not it is 100% fictitous is kind of arguable though.. There was no script, and the actors were basically dumped in the wood, and dropped food and equipment at a predetermined spot everyday. The dialogue and happenings in the film were made up as the film progressed. The noises and whatnot in the woods were actually the two directors and crew. They basically played with the actors, got them to have a little bit of true fear and worry in them and then the emotions came out more realistically. I consider this movie to be somewhat true, as the three actors weren't reading from a script, but were in fact filming what was truly happening. The fact that there weren't any special effects was disappointing if you were watching this movie for purely entertainment, and didn't give a damn if you gave it a second thought as you walked out the theater. But if you were looking to get scared, and sit on the edge of your seat, this was a good one. I had a copy of the movie back in April, and word got round my school about it. We ended up doing showings of it every other night in my room. Kids were getting wigged out as long as the setting was right. So, go see it late at night, with an almost empty theater, and watch yourself sit on the edge of your seat straining your ears to hear the sounds in the woods, and then don't worry if you jump every now and then when you think you hear something. Go check out the website on this movie at http://www.blairwitch.com and then the "Behind the scenes" type website at http://www.haxan.com you'll learn a lot about the way the movie was made. A rather interesting approach to film making...
