But, his latest song is a little better (though I don't remember the title.) Prince's "1999" has had plenty of time to sink in, and has become a great party song, deserving respect. In fact, Prince didn't like the song at all and didn't think it would get any play. Just to clearify a statement in my "linvin la vida loca" post: I never said Ricky Martin himself was gay, alright. And in the english language we have words with feminine intonations, we call boats "she", but that does not mean the owner, captin, or people on board are gay. Well, I'm sorry. I didn't realize that there was a need to curse. Anyway. Menudo _was_ pretty big in the U.S. They've been around for about 15 years, with a rotating group of singers, of which Ricky Martin was one at some point. (Sorry; I was never a big Menudo fan, so I don't really know off the top of my head which years he was in the group.) Someone else who's been around for at least the past 2 decades, please verify that Menudo _was_ big back in their early days. Even though people knew them as "Menudo" not "Ricky Martin", people still heard Ricky Martin sing -- and that was the original claim (I don't have the original post, but it was something along the lines of Ashley enjoying hearing early Ricky Martin stuff, because she'd never heard his stuff from "before he got big"). I'm just trying to say that you probably _did_ year him "before he got big", but you didn't realize that it was Ricky Martin, because it was packaged under the 'Menudo' name not the name 'Ricky Martin'. As far as "talking about music all over the damn world", there are a WHOLE LOT of bands from other countries that are heard (and in many cases, quite widely) in the U.S. Garbage, for example, is a band based in the United States.... but their vocalist Shirley Manson comes from somewhere else in "the damn world". Or, take as another example Natalie Imbruglia. (I shudder to bring her up, since I'm a _huge_ Ednaswap fan.) She is "music all over the damn world", yet you've probably heard of her (and probably heard her music, too), even though she's never toured in the U.S. [at least, to the best of my knowledge.] My point is this: despite the fact that Menudo are/were from Brasil originally, they _still_ did make it big here in the U.S. And even though they _do_ classify as "music all over the damn world", the fact still remains that they _were_ big here in the U.S. several years ago -- as well as in Brasil. And even though you might not have heard their music (chances are, you probably _have_ heard Menudo songs, without knowing what it was), that doesn't mean that songs like "La Vida Loca" are the _only_ music that has made Ricky Martin "big" today. A couple of things... Ricky Martin in Menudo.. from what I've heard, Menudo is basically a South American? version of the Backstreet Boys except young kids, right? Pop music basically... Me and my roomate were talking today about his sort of thing. So much music made today is just about distraction.. I think Robbie Williams, ironically, said it best when he was describing how his music was made. Something like: "I go in and do a few takes to get the vocals, and then a few weeks later, someone puts it to music, and then I get to enjoy being a pop star." It's nice how Robbie Williams can recognize that, and put it out on the table in an interview (thats one thing I admire about Robbie, his sense of humility (dunno if thast's the best word I want to use but it'll do) ) The other pop groups don't really mention this aspect of the creation of their music.. they just kinda keep hushed about it...or at least I've never heard it really brought up, so correct me if I'm wrong... Bu anyways, we were thinking back to the days when one didn't have electricity or before music could be recorded and replayed. Back then, music was much more of an art form, and when you went and listened to music, a lot of the time it was to listen to the music, and not just to have something to brush your teeth to. I think music was probably held in much higher esteeem back then, and only musicians were the ones who made music, and not your everday joe who can afford a guitar and can scream into a mic. Although I do highly promote everyone to try their hand in the world of music, just don't rape the art form and reduce it to a few beats looped over and over with a few vocals. This is my personal view on music, and I'm sure everyone has their own... don't attack it, but rather give your own if you disagree... construction of ones own argument is better than the deconstruction of another. on another note, Happy Summer Solstice to everyone (although it was the 21st). Hope you did something fun, and got a chance to shed your clothes. I'm allowed to wish this to everyone because the Summer Solstice is not a religious holiday, but rather a holiday based on our clendar as it is the longest day of the year. Although I don't like the newer stuff from the Smashing Pumpkins, I still think that Siamese Dreams is one of the best albums produce in the last few years. Also, don't leave out such great male musicians as all the boys in the Grateful Dead, Jim Morrison, Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, etc.. there's a lot of great music still floating around out there that you'd be surprised at how good it still is after all these years, but then again, it depends on your taste in music I guess, but who knows, tastes change, and you never know what you truly like until you've tried everything. - -the latest in naked news: Four College Students Caught Streaking Denison Campus. Today in the mail I recieved a little, "welcome package" from SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design), which is where I am going to college in the fall. It had a T-Shirt, a Refillable pen, and a coupon for 15% off all Art Supplies at a local store. It is so COOL, I am GETTING SOOOOO EXCITED! That isn't all though. I just found out that starting last year, SCAD is holding an annual FILM FESTIVAL!! Savannah could be the next CANNES!!!! It's so awesome to me, because that is why I'm going to SCAD in the first place, to be a film-maker! I'm going to give myself a heart attack waiting until I go. I don't have to be there until SEPT. 10th!! I'm going to die from excitement before the time comes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ************************************************* "Lost In a world that's so arranged Common people just a link in a chain" --"Too Deep" Linda Perry ************************************************* http://www.listen.to/lindaperry ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jun 1999 01:09:44 -0400 From: "Allen Knowles" Subject: Re: SCAD Coolness....I went on a tour there last year, seemed like a damn cool place.
