"to bring you my love" is one of the five best albums ever imo, and the newest, "is this desire?", is also great. i'm really into trip hop, so i also have to suggest tricky's "maxinquaye" and one of portishead's, either "dummy" or their self-titled, i can never decide which is better. "maxinquaye" is the single best trip hop album ever (since i don't really think that either massive or portishead really are trip hop, but "maxinquaye" is w/o a doubt). really velvety and snug, as good trip hop should be. portishead actually has some similarities to pOe come to think of it. portishead is very jazzy and lounge-y, which isn't a bad thing: remember "lounge-a-palooza" and rose is a rose? and in fingertips, our lady is just as lounge-y. in terms of pOe, portishead is most similar to fingertips, except a helluva lot weirder w/ neato electronic fx. >That brings me to my next question...does anyone have suggestions of bands >or artists like POE? The Banshees have broken up, but Siouxsie is now devoting all her efforts to her "other" band, which she formed with her husband, drummer Budgie, called The Creatures. The Creatures have just released "Anima/Animus". Siouxsie and the Banshees were at the forefront of the goth/punk movement in the late 70s, and recorded for two decades before breaking up a couple of years ago. I highly recommend "Kaleidoscope", "Through the Looking Glass", "Hyaena" and "Tinderbox" by Siouxsie & the Banshees (okay, "Superstition" & "The Rapture" too, despite one or two "questionable" songs), and both "Boomerang" and "Anima Animus" by The Creatures. Okay, now let's go back a bit to the one woman who can truly be called "The First Lady of Rock and Roll"...Grace Slick. Never has a voice so resembled a razor-sharp knife. Never has a voice in rock and roll so soared and so churned the hearts and minds of anyone who listened! If you want brilliant, intense lyrics from a mind that is both intelligent and thumbs its nose at the "establishment", no one, NO ONE can top Grace Slick, especially her pre-Jefferson Starship work with Jefferson Airplane (the greatest rock band ever) and her "side" efforts with fellow flyer Paul Kantner. While her solo albums (excepting "Manhole", which is amazing, but very rare) leave something to be desired, her Jefferson Airplane work is stunning. Check out the full length CDs, "Crown of Creation" (with "Lather" and "Greasy Heart"), "Surrealistic Pillow" (with "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit"), "Volunteers" (with "Hey Frederick" and "Eskimo Blue Day"), "After Bathing at Baxter's" (one of the best overall albums of all time), and the live CD, "Bless Its Pointed Little Head" (Grace's "Bear Melt" is yummy!). Also, check out her solo effort, "Manhole" (if you can find it); as well as her two collaborations with Paul Kantner, "Sunfighter" (my favorite album of all time, with Grace's soaring "Silver Spoon"), and "Baron von Tollbooth & the Chrome Nun" (featuring Grace Slick on "Ballad of the Chrome Nun", "Fishman", and "Across the Board").Also, it's fair to note that however great her skills as a lead singer, she was equally wonderful singing harmonies, so even though the Airplane albums also feature songs with Marty Balin, Paul Kantner, and Jorma Kaukonen on lead, her back-up work is worth the listen. A few other suggestions with women singers... Bjork/The Sugarcubes (from Iceland) Iva Bittova (from the Czech Republic, hard to find, but not impossible...try Barnes & Noble) Dead Can Dance (featuring Lisa Gerrard) Good luck!
