It is a sign of intelligence and therefore a sign of eliteness. Not everyone can speak norwegian, and not everyone can speak french. But the fact remains that you stand out in an English-speaking crowd when you do it (or you attract a mate when you are different). You don't Have to do it, and so it is showing off when you do.
