I woke up today and found out we'd bombed Afghanistan. Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase 'while you were sleeping', huh? Usually I try to ignore the news, because it's mostly depressing (as shown in this picture here). I don't really care what Clinton's motives were in pressing the prettily colored buttons, though ... it's done, and so long as it didn't happen needlessly (not having facts, I can't make that decision), I won't bitch and complain. As for the government, I'm going to toss out a book suggestion: -Dark Rivers of the Heart- by Dean Koontz. I've never been much for Koontz, because all his stuff is essentially the same, but this one was a lot better than some of the others I've read (scratch that; _all_ the others I've read by him), and it deals with the issue of a government which is in the hands of the government and not the people as it was originally intended. My nickname? Actually, I've been using 'The Adept' a lot, but if that causes a problem, I'll just switch over to 'The Prophet' or some other recently discarded nick ... no need for confrontation on my part. And the last part of this post, (it rhymes with 'Nicks') has been mostly deleted due to explicit content. I'll just comment that it bothers me a bit that someone would even bother to derive enjoyment from insulting people s/he didn't know or had ever met in person, simply for the sake of the insult. It seems sad that this person would have to resort to this for entertainment .... so if such insults are the pinnacle of a person's day (or even her/his daily routine), then s/he has my pity. It's going to be brought to us regardless. Terrorism is also a sad fact, and if nothing is done to stop it, then innocents will be killed in larger numbers. I think what was done had to be done, although the possibility does remain that this does fit the 'Wag the Dog' scenario. It does seem rather uncharacteristic of Bill Clinton to take any sort of immediate action like this. But, if what they say is true, then it had to be done, and it most definitely isn't over. I think the fact that Willy is involved in this tired Lewinski scandal may have helped sway his decision, but is not the reason this action was taken. The need seemed to be there, and the distraction is only a nice side effect for him if it were to work. I don't think there will be any distracting from this case, though. The guy has far too many enemies for it to be forgotten. Gaul Aiel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Aug 1998 11:43:11 EDT From: PeachAcid@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR striking Afganistan and Sudan someone--probably an uncle--once told me that countries need a good war (whatever THAT means) every couple of decades to boost the economy. I've thought SO much about this, like, whenever I hear about war. I don't know WHAT to think anymore. Like, if Japan were to get into a war, they would give thousands of people jobs making war materials in factories, etc. Then if they won the war, their economy would go back up, and thus the world's economy would be much better. However, who are they going to fight? And what about all the people who would die? Is the economy really worth thousands of death? I'm not saying there will be a war between Japan and other people, or that there should be. I'm just saying if there were, whatI think could happen. I don't really know much about this, so I'm sort of trying to figure it out by typing it out. We live in a good period of time, despite bombs in Ireland, terrorists in Afghanistan, poor economy in Asia, and corrupt presidents. Look around you, right now. You have a computer. You're intelligent enough to operate it. You've either graduated high school or are almost there(you know, still in school). Already, if you've graduated the fifth grade, you have more education than many, many people ever get. If you want a banana, a carton of milk, a few eggs, or some bread, all you need do is take a trip to the supermarket. Things are going well. I'm NOT saying everything is perfect. The thing is, everyone who wants to can GET there. There is always a way. Now I really don't know what I'm talking about.... As a child I always wished I could have a radio that you could listen to all the rock stations in the world with, later in life I dreamed of the day when we would be able to communicate as we now do via the internet, I never realised that the second wish would be the bearer of the first, there is an ocean of music to expore via the net, and there is a Freeware application that will let ya do just that, tho it does require that you already have RealPlayer installed so get a copy at http://www.real.com/showcase/index.html now this player alone would be enough to get you music, but the second application that makes it come together is vTuner which you can get from http://www.vtuner.com this "tuner" has over 900 preset stations sorted into a variety of catagories my favorite being "alternative" where you will find my favorite station http://wber.monroe.edu/listen.html as one of the presets. Another preset station that is a favorite is the one out of the University of Vermont. If you into it there are also presets for the NYPD and the LAPD. While I'd rather rock, I did pop in to the NYPD and was promptly rewarded with the report of a local man being pulled over in NYC, rather ironic as NYC is like 600 miles from me or is that 6 hours at 100mph? I forget. Another great station that cannot be heard with RealPlayer but requires the "AudioActive" player is located at www.wrct.org which is at the WRCT Pittsburgh 88.3 FM is funded by the Carnegie Mellon University Student Activities Fee etc.... and you can get the audoiactive player at http://www.audioactive.com/ keep in mind these are commercial free stations, while the majority of the fare is commercial do a little searching for radio links and you will find pages that let you sort the stations by educational, which means commercail free and hopefuly alternative. For those of you who are aware of my long effort to have POE returned to regular rotation on the WBER playlist since her banning due to her affiliations with WNVE I exchanged e-mails most of the day with the station manager and hope to have somthing positive to say soon beyond POES return to one of the best local/net based stations I know of. The exchange of e-mails was initiated when I fired off one of my routine mails ripping them for not playing POE, addressed to the station manager specificly and he shot back with he had just played her at 6:12 am, who knew? But shes still a bad word at the station and I'd like to see that changed. P.S. the "educational" stations are not on the air 24/7 at this time, cuz it is STILL summer, N j0y. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Aug 1998 19:19:22 PDT From: "TJ 13" Subject: Re: The blood-dimmed tide... They werent normal bombs either they are designed to spread and drop deadly shrapnel along a lorg area.If our weapons are so great wouldn't one to each place have got the job done with less pointless distruction. If we know who was responsible then why not take that person out and leave the innocents.
