Usually you have to at least pay for the tape and postage, or send those instead of sending money for them to buy. A 2:1 means you have to send 2 tapes for every one tape you get from them. Usually they'll have a set of rules posted for trading: whether they'll do 2:1s or just straight trading, the type/brand of tape to send (most prefer Type II tape High Bias, and they usually specify Maxell), etc. >this is. and also how do you get into tape trading? do you have >to buy a bootleg to trade for others? i would appreciate some >kind soul helping me out, here. :o) thanks. You don't have to buy a bootleg to start out. You should be able to find traders that will do 2:1 so you get something to start with. Obligatory bootleg definition: a recording made by a company and sold for profit, well-known example: "import" CDs of live shows by an artist that are not released by the artist's record company. The term for trading is usually "live tapes" but everyone calls them boots anyway ;P >~tobias >who up until last year had no clue what 69 meant...i should just >put a flashing sign around my head that says "NAIVE" so someone >could rape me... I keep saying, all the big alt-rock artists from the mid 90s have all finally released stuff or will be releasing stuff, the slackers being Alanis, Hole, etc. I was surprised to find out new Nada Surf and Crumb albums are coming out! But the only two left (that I keep in my mind ;) are Elastica and Poe, both groups supposedly had tentative months scheduled and then they always get pushed back again ;P >But that really doesnt mean anything. The artists have contracts with the record companies - they are expected to deliver. Being in the Billboard 200 isn't so relevant, but sometimes they do get dropped or are able to get released from the contract. It seems to me that lately, artists get lucky on the second major label album - Fastball, Semisonic. Poe is signed to Atlantic for 5 more records, time will tell how many they will actually distribute. Since she's the only artist on Fishkin Entertainment, I suppose they're giving her all the "creative room" she wants right now. I personally think she's just enjoying time with her boyfriend or something, not so much recording ;P ;> At least the wait means I can spend the time (and more money ;/ ) on other bands...and at least there are a few new Poe demos recorded... - --Michele ------------------------------ Date: 19 Aug 1998 07:37:15 -0600 From: "PadmaT" Subject: NPR: Pagan--what it really means Dear Fellow Psychos, As a long-practicing Pagan, I think it fair that I shed some light on this question, as I have often confronted those who wish to associate Pagans and Witches (practitioners of Wicca) with their Judeo-Christian deity, Satan or Lucifer. In general, "pagan" refers to a person who practices paganism or perceives the world as a pagan. There are certain qualities which, in general, apply to most, if not all people who refer to themselves as pagan: 1. Paganism refers to the indigenous religions of Europe, the Americas, Africa, and even Asia, including Shamanism, which preceeded the often violent intrusion and forced conversion of Christianity and other Middle Eastern (Levantine) religions. 2. Paganism is often polytheistic, that is, it acknowledges either more than one deity, or recognizes that "Deity" may have more than one "mask". In Wicca, this polytheism centers around the Goddess and the Horned God, both of whom bear several names. Polytheism is naturally pluralistic and is therefore very tolerant of other religions. 3. Paganism is often pantheistic, which is the belief that Nature itself is sacred and is imbued with divine presence. A significant difference between Paganism and the Levantine Triad (Judaism/Christianity/Islam) is that the Levantine religions perceive God as something so removed and distant from mankind that an intermediary (Christ, the Virgin Mary, Mohammed) is necessary to keep communication open between God and Man. Pantheism, however, allows no such distance--the divine is upon us, always..."we are already in the fucking heavens!" as I wrote once in a poem. The American philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson's discussion of "oversoul" is very much a discussion of pantheism. 4. Paganism is often animistic, which contains the perception that every part of creation is conscious, and is endowed with personality. Every rock, animal, wind, creek, tree, bug, cloud--you name it, is its own unique expression of divinity. Animism is necessarily pantheism, but pantheism isn't necessarily animism. 5. As far as is possible, in Wicca and other European-based practices of Paganism, modern practitioners have attempted to recreate the rituals and practices of old. Because most of this knowledge was suppressed and/or outright destroyed by the Christian church(es), Wiccans, etc., are often accused of "inventing a tradition"--which is, in fact, an accurate accusation. But what choice have they but to invent new traditions? Hope this helps clarify things. It's quite easy to call something crap and blow it off without any support for your opinion. It actually takes some thought to construct an intelligent argument about something. I know that I occasionally get interesting looks for my beliefs, but they are the way that I percieve the world. Life is perception though, and different people lend different perceptions to things... It's usually easier to dismiss something that you don't know about than to learn about it, but I really don't think that ignorance is bliss... it's just a wall between you and what is really out there to experience in the world. - - tyr ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Aug 1998 00:34:58 -0400 From: Erin Kyles Subject: Re: NPR: "proudwolf" i don't see anything wrong with "proudwolf".
