I felt the need to do it again... (Last time I saw the conversations going downhill, I started the Spice Girl rumor...) As originally posted by Jarrod, 12/23/96 - ---------------------------------------------- As I answer these questions please usderstand if I don't personally address the author of the question. What POE did was to take a cassette recorder into the bathroom at the Celebrity theatre for an hour plus and answered almost all of the questions. To help me out she did read the names of some of the angry-psychos that asked questions. I couldn't believe how much of a sweetheart she was about this. Here goes.... P.S. If there are some mistypes please respect that. Thanks :-) ************** Q1: Does the original printing of the record have different mixes on it compared to the current album as it is printed.... POE: Yes that is true. The only song that is different is JUNKIE. The reason that we mixed it over is because there is a horn section that we had trouble getting permission to use when we re-pressed the album. About 25,000 albums went out with the first batch. SO. If you have one it would be something to hang on to. "I don't even think I have a copy." JARROD: Does any AP have this original pressing? I will be putting all or part of this version of "Junkie" on my web site at http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/1301 (probably by 8/1/98) *********** Q2: Where is POE's brother and what is he up to? POE: My brother is in LA and is finishing a novel right now.. If you are into thos heady authors like Thoimas Pinchis or James Joyce. Finishing the book in three months. He also writes Jazz songs. We just recorded one of his soungs for an album called Loungeapalooza. It will be coming out next year. We got a famous bass player who used to be yelled at by Buddy Rich. There is a bit of Trivia for you. JARROD: What is POE's brother's name? ************ Q3: Was "HELLO" ever released outside of the United States? POE: I think HELLO has been released outside of the US. Honestly I don't know where. I know it is being played in SPAIN. Also i know it is being played in Germany. We haven't been back to those places in a long time so I don't know what the deal is. JARROD: Any AP know where we can look up internation realeses of albums? ************** Q4: What shots were sensored from the Angry Johnny Video? POE: Oh god... I don't know what the deal was. I would love to give you a good story but I can't. I think it had someting to do with the blow-up dolls. *laughs* MTv just doesn't seem to have a sense of humor. JARROD: MTv? I don't trust them. **************** Q5: Which two songs on HELLO were done entirely on computer. POE: First off. Hello was completely programmed and then dumped to analog. I recorded the whole thing myself on an old EPS 16 plus that I had in my house. The twon songs done entirely on computer were.... Beauiful Girl and Choking the Cherry. The funny thing is that those two tracks had real drums. It was getting toward the end of the whole record writing process and we were actually running out of money. I had a friend that could do all of this stuff on his MAC computer using ProTools so we did it. I totally loved it. I would definately do it again if ihad the chance. JARROD: Do it POE. DO IT. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 11:15:30 -0500 From: Jason Capriotti Subject: FW: AP Questions 6-10 Repost 12/23/96 As originally posted by Jarrod, 12/23/96 - ---------------------------------------------- ******************* Q6: What was it like opening for KISS? POE: Ya that was cool... We opened for KISS on Howleen night at Irvine MEadows outside of LA. I dressed up as the Plague that I did when I was 8 years old. I had these lasers on my eyes and it looked like this death creature. It was great.... It was so Spinal Tap you don't even know.... We thought to ourselves as we watched the KISS show.... If aliens landed right now and saw this and thought that this is what this society is all about.... What would they think. Gene Simmons has bllood coming out of his mouth. What on earth would they think. We wanted to dress up as KISS but they wouldnt let us do it. JARROD: How fortunate could or POE get. KISS. I didn't know that. ******************* Q7 Do you remember me. Jim Myers? POE: Ya. I remember you well... He bought us dinner. More than just me. Me, my manager, my sound guy, and I think my bass player. Infact I think I am still digesting. *laugh* Hopefully not. Thank YOU.... JARROD: POE Rules to remember shit like that. Way to go Jim. ****************** Q8 Do you remember getting hit with mud at the buzzard fest? POE: I did get hit in the face with MUD... The entire audience was as muddy as they could get. It was late in the show and the rain made this place a swamp. We decided we are going to get it. We covered Henry (The chello) with a blanket and went for it. During the first song I got hit with mud..... At that point I grabbed the mud and rubbed it all over my face like war paint and went for it. I figured what the fuck. Everybody else was muddy whay not us. The mud flying pretty muched stopped after that. I think it was kind of primal with everybody. They figured that we were down with the mud and we got muddy with them and they stopped throwing it.... I took my y biggest stage dive happened there. I jumped off a 15 foot PA. I am totally lucky that I didn't end up like Christopher Reeve. It was the funnes thing that I have ever done. The audience just caught me. They were so cool. I took a leap of faith. I don't know if I would do it again because you can really break your neck. But who knows. JARROD: I wish I get to have some opportunities that POE has. ************************ Q9: Was Padre Fear done on a computer? POE: It was laid to analog. When it was done I didn't like thae bridge. I had just met Cameron at this point so I had him come in and lay down the bridge. I then sliced it in using computers. I thought it was pretty cool that I could use a computer and make that work. JARROD: Computers Rule (sometimes) ********************* Q10: Why didn't Marily Manson play Angry Johnny in the video: POE: Actually we had talked about that long before the video ever came out. Aside from scheduling problems.... We discussed this before he exploded. Super duper Alice Coopere Rock stuff. I talked to him about it and I though it would be cool when we were both at the same statge. I think it would have been great if it happened then. After his explosion I thought to myself that I didn't want to use his fame for the sake of advancing my career. It just didn't feel right. I then decided to keep doing my thing and sticking to my guns and it worked out. JARROD: Is POE cool or what? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 11:15:42 -0500 From: Jason Capriotti Subject: FW: AP Questions 11-15 Repost 12/23/96 As originally posted by Jarrod, 12/23/96 - ---------------------------------------------- ********************** Q11: I heard a song from a friends tape (Rochester, NY). The line goes... I will be there... Is this new? POE: Actually the words are: I'll see you there. It is a new song that actually is not finished yet. We have tried it a few different ways and its not there yet. That is the road though. You try new stuff taking risks every night and that is what keeps the road interesting. JARROD: Sorry Tim. I was hoping we could have gotten a name of that song. ***************** Q12: A question from Darren L. Todarro I want to know the inspiration behind dolphin? Why a dolphin? POE: I love dolphins. They haven't evolved in over 30 million years and they seem to be pretty ok. Everything associated with dolphins are positive. They is a certain grace to what they represent. Also it has to do with a time in my life that I deemed to be swimming with a bunch of sharks and I didn't want to be too influenced as to their perspective. There complete and uter faith in humanity. It is like... If a bridge burns there is antother way to get there and maybe I don't have to stoop to their level and become a viscious shark... Ya know. I'm gonna move like a dolphin. The other thing is the idea... Have you ever had the sense that something is wrong and you don't know what it is? "Something got into my engine and slowed me down. Now I've got to turn this whole ship around. " Everything is heading in this one direction and you're the lonely voice sanying. NO, this is wrong. This is going the wrong way. It is like you have to communicate to the whole crew of this ship (which might be parts of your brain) and say NO. We have to turn this whole thing around. You psyche yourself out say hey I have spent all of this time going in this direction. We wasted all ogf this time. Though the sooner you make that change and head out in a new life direction the better off you are and I was being sort of optimistic and think that I don't have to burn bridges. Or bridges may burn but there is other ways to get there. In terms of communication and understanding. JARROD: Add that to the interpretations of songs.... :-) ********************** Q13: From: Lyza Gardner: When is lovelines on MTv.... And Cameron better remember to mention me or I am going to go after his children. POE: * laughs * You can't go after his children Lyza. They only wanted on person to do the show and that was me. So please give him another chance he is a really great guy. PLEASE *laugh* He is worth it he is a nice guy. BTW Lyza yu rule for always being in the front row. Poertland rules too. We have had some of the best shows there. And good food too. JARROD: Did you hook them up with food Lyza? **************************** Q14: Who or what has been your greatest inspiration? POE: Honestly, I think my greatest inspiration has been an extremely dysfunctional family upbringing. It had a lot of great things to it but a lot of craziness. I think when something matters to you and it goes wrong or gets out of your reach.... Typical unrequited (sp?) love. You are left there to figure a lot of things out and I think that necessity to figure out what happened with my family and what was screwed up and what wasn't. To sift through the good and the bad -- so you don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Ya know. That has probably inspired me the most. In terms of writing. Musicly it is Jazz... so much!!!!! From Billy Holiday to Black Flag. Through my punk rock phase. It is (punk) extremely empowering to say... Anybody can get up and do this. It is not like you need to have all of the training in the world. It is what just comes out of your soul is worthy of expression. I think that is true for everyone. I think that every human being is an artist. JARROD: The tone as she is answering these questions is awesome. I will be posting some audio on POE.ORG. POE is so genuine. ********************* Q15: When was the last time you ate Shushi? POE: Actually it was two months ago and we were doing a show in San Francisco and we were running all over looking for a place to eat. They band and I decided that we were not going to be eating Dennys again and we hunted out a restaraunt. We found this place. It was totally awesome. Ofcourse I don't remember the name but... I think it was the only place open and it was great. JARROD: POE.... Next round of sushi is on me. *************** More coming..... :-) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 11:18:48 -0500 From: Jason Capriotti Subject: FW: AP Questions 16-20 Repost 12/23/96 As originally posted by Jarrod, 12/23/96 - ---------------------------------------------- ******************** Q16: What is the deal with the next album? POE: Well. We plan to tour for another five or six months beofre we get around to getting into the studio. The reason for that is because record labels are very firm about making all of the money back from the first album. As much as I wish that was not entirely true I feel ready to start the next album. By the same token there may be a lot of people who just have gotten hip to the album, because were starting to get some good radio play, deserve a show and see us live. I am going to make this with the band that I currently have (The ones thatdid the band version oh Hello and Angry Johnny. The one thing with the first album is I could make it as eclectic as possible. I think that we are going to experiment with some big band/swing sound... And some heavy rockin stuff. Maybe some simple acoustic. Maybe some loops. It is going to be a totally different process because the band is now going to involved from square one... WHICH I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER ABOUT. They are my dream band. I wish I had them when I made my first album. BUT.. I don't know what it is going to sound like. You get in there and start messing around. You don't know what is going to come out. Let your imagination out and see what happens. JARROD: I love you guys (AP)! *********************** Q17: Do you like alanis Morissette? POE: Alanis Morrissette has a lot of valid lyrics. I also know that she is going to get a lot of shit for selling a lot of albums. There is always going to be a backlash and she'll catch flack because she is so well known that a lot don't feel personally connected anymore. I think that is being hard on her. I think that she made a great record. My question is: I wonder how much of the album she actually wrote? Because I would lose respect for if I found out that she didn't.... Since she didn't write any of the music, I can respect her lyrics. You can be a great singer and write a lot of great lyrics and that is art. THAT IS ENOUGH. I have an enourmous amount of respect for her. I think that she wrote a great album lyrically. JARROD: I like alanis..... ************************* Q18: Where were you born? How tall are you? POE: I was born in New York City. At the Women's Hospital I think. 5'10" JARROD: I will look into where she was born. ************************* Q19 From: Bernard Alpern... Do you remember me and my three friend's outside of Irving Plaza in N.Y.C. My friend gave you a necklace. Do you still have it? POE: Yup. I do remember you guys. I still have the necklace. People throw the most amazing stuff up to me on stage. I keep ALL of it. I usually wear as much of it as I can. I think what Iam going to do in the long run is to keep all of this stuff and maybe auction off all of it and attache your names to it. IF I collect all of this stuff and I can't wear it. I don't know. If someday in the future I have the pull where somebody will pay more for things because they came from me then I want to give back. We can give the money to AIDS Research, or some other cause.... Child Abuse. Womens Shelters. Some worthy cause. We will find a good one. YOu might want to write me on that. "What kind of causes are you interested in supporting?" AND it might take years. It might take five years but i am going to hang onto everything that you guys give me and I will do something with that in the future because I know that that stuff comes from the heart and what better way for it to end up. Helping somebody who needs it because I need it right now and you guys are helping me. JARROD: She loves us. **************************** Q20: Are you an athiest like you father. If not do you have some sort of religion? POE: My father wasn't really an athiest as he was an agnostic. He was raised Catholic and hated it but seemed that is some way in his entire life he was enslaved to it. An agnostic doesn't necessarily believe in God but doesn't attach themself to any organized religion I think that he believed more in Star Wars than God. He loved that movie and he told me all of the time as a kid. "May the force be with you." He loved that line..... He used to say that there is a force out there and nobody knows what it is. It gives us consciousness. It gives us life. That makes us die. We don't know what it is but there is something gone on out there. Infact. The night he died he looked into my eyes and said "Ya know POE. Find your bliss and live there." It was one of the most deeply spiritual things that anyone has ever said to me. Cause I thought... So many times we wear are personal tradgedies and depressions as badge of honor. And I think some of the most honorable folks in the world are the ones that can find their bliss. Out of that only positive things can happen. Maybe that is cheesy but I think I believe that. Not that I necessarily know how to do it but it is blissful to sing. I know that. ***** As far as any type of religion that I follow.... ** My dad gave me a copy of "The Origin of the Species" and the Bible when I was eight years old and said you figure it out. I think my religion would be more about asking that and searching. I think that anybody that ells you that This is the structure of the universe has to be lying. The truth is... We don't know. We do know that we are alive and that is pretty strange and we know that we die and that is as mysterious as well and I think for me it is about. YOu know..... Just consciousness. Being conscious in the fact that, my God, I don't know why but I breath and eat and sleep and fart and sing and love and hate..... hopefully not too much hating. Um... Thats cool. AND whether it is pain or pleasure that I am experiencing... I am alive to experience it. And..... You know. I think that all organized religions are bullshit. ToTaL BULLSHIT. I think that everones sense of that mystery is unique as they are and you can't tell sombody else.... This is what is going to you when you die.... NOBODY KNOWS! JARROD: There is a lot more simplicity to my life now. Another perspective to answer a question that I have been asking myself recently. Yeah, thats pretty cool. By the way, when I live in Cincinnatti there was a chain called Bigs, and it was like Meijer and Super Wall-Mart (they had a gas station, but no McDonalds, but then a movie theatre came in next door and they shared some resteraunts in a food court type thing.) I was just wondering If Bigs was still around. I had heard it went out of business, but that would suck. I bought a really pimped out calculater there when I was in 7th grade (at least I thought it was pimped out at the time, in reality it kinda sucked compared to the freaking TI graphing calculators I had to use in HS) I also bought ET at Bigs the day that it came out on video, which is kinda cool oh yeah, and speaking of cool stuff coming out on video: Disney's The Black Cauldron comes out on video in August, I am so there, I have been waiting for this one for years. I am going to get it along with Bed Knobs and Broomsticks, because you get five bucks off when you buy both, and both movies kick some serious butt. ok, later. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 17:41:52 PDT From: "Choklit Cow" Subject: NPR: :( *you need not read unless you're nice or sympathetic* hello, my fellow PsYcHo friends see, Noelle is having an identity crisis and needs support (so any unsympathetic assholes can go elsewhere!) but ok then a couple days ago, i had a friend over that i hadn't seen in a year i remembered her as being perfect and worshipped the ground she walked on well, i met her for a day and she was MORE perfect than ever and, well, now i feel insignificant cause next to her i felt so LOW and unimportant (this wasn't done by her on purpose- hell, she has no idea!) and she was just so nice and friendly and cheerful and cute and flirty and chattery and had a definite identity (vegetarian episcopalian ska-swingster StraightEdge HardCore) and i feel, well, incomplete now. i want to know- is this unjustified? what can i do to feel better? cause i'm not a bad person but i still feel like nothing (me in a nutshell- unique individual kinda cute i guess gothic moods folky hippie moods hell REAL moody) i just don't know anymore- Help! ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 18:45:18 -0700 (PDT) From: PeaceLoveGrace@webtv.net (Adam Robinson) Subject: Re: NPR: :( *you need not read unless you're nice or sympathetic* Well, no matter what, Choklit Cow, I love you as a person, based upon your posts alone. Is it a rock record or a folk record or a jazz record. I had a real tough time with the fact that it is so ecelctic. Your guys support is the only reason we have been able to keep this alive nad keep getting money form the record company to keep going. The album is not mainstream because of that. To me it is like sometimes. The way a song sounds sort of should go along with the lyrics. Like in Fingertips..... It is sort of an ommage (sp?) to that yearning type of old jazz that I have loved. The song started when I took a sample of old Sergio Mendez and pitched it down an octive. It sounded hilarious. THe cracks on the album were there and I looped it and had fun. HELLO I had written in advanced and since the references to the internet I felt that the sound had to be a little colder. Programmed drums and machine oriented. It went that way. THAT DAY is so personal and intimate that I wanted it with a cello. Again.... Thank you so much because not a lot of people can deal with the eclecticism. JARROD: I'm tired.... ************************** Q23: What was the last book that you read? POE: The last book that I read that I like was... I read this book on serial killers. It was a dollar and I don't remember the name. But I read it on the bus for about a week as much as I could and it creeped me out. I was getting really scared. GEEK LOVE by Kathere Dunn RANDOM ACTS of SENSELESS VIOLENCE by Jack Womack Both of those books blew me away.... JARROD: My library just grew.... ********************* Q24: What is you favorite movie? POE: I have tooo many favorites.... Old Hitchcock... Rebecca Third Man Citizen Kane Persona by Bergman Fargo Usual Suspects. Total Action Movie Fetish.... Terminator 2 THe effects were amazing. When in a bad mood I really enjoy bad horror movies.... Nightmare on Elmstreet Series. Original Omen I like horror. I think it was because I had such a bad childhood. It was like.... "Oh ya that is my dad's girlfriend's head spinning around there." Star Wars too.... I saw it like 15 times. We have the whole collection on the bus. **************************** Q25: Favorite Food? POE: That changes. I go from a tremendous sweet tooth to craving carrot juice when I am sick. I love Japaneese food.... SUSHI I love. It might sound trendy but I fucking love it. It mays osund disgusting but raw fish. I dig it. And pastas. I don't really eat too many fruits or vegetables. I eat really poorly. It is hard to eat well on the road. It usually is a Denny's every night. I get the French Slam with poached eggs and French Toast and Hot Chocolate. After a year on the bus I am trying to cook more. JARROD: I'll cook you dinner anytime POE. I even cook some mean sushi. ********************************************************************** Clint Doyle, CNA | "And the license said you had to stick around hcdoyle@direct.ca | until I was dead, But if you're tired of hcdoyle@poe.org | looking at my face I guess I already am" cdoyle1@hotmail.com | "Divorce Song" - Liz Phair ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 19:03:04 -0700 From: Clint Doyle Subject: AP Questions 26-30 Repost 12/23/96 As originally posted by Jarrod, 12/23/96 - ---------------------------------------------- ********************* Q26: What would you be doing if you were not being the object of our affection? POE: Why would I want to be anything else. * laughuing * No actually in the future.... You guys are the object of my affection.... By-the-way. I would like to produce other bands. I would like to have a film company. Develop, Produce, maybe direct films for young/new artists. I would like to be a source out side of the big industry that nurtures new talent. I know that the people that helpled me in that sense we invaluable. I think with the internet it is possible to do a lot more independently than in the past. I have been approached a couple of times to act. I don't know if I want to do that yet. Maybe a cameo appearances. What do you guys think? JARROD: I would go and see it (duh). ******************************** Q27: Please explain Angry Johnny. POE: To me Angry Johnny is like a part of somebody's personality. Like an archatype. Like the person becomes obsessed by this demonic character. it is that idea that everybody can have an angry johnny in them. Even me. You think that you are dealing with somebody you know. And all of the sudden that person turns on you and all of the suuden there is a total psycho there. You are making my life miserable but I am madly in love with you and I don't know how to playcate (sp?) the angry johnny in you in order to carry on. So do I kill him or make him.... uh... feel better *laughing* and it is a love hat thing. Ya know? And it also has elements of whatever part it is in me that has myself deal with that side of somebody's personality is the Jezebel in Hell. It may be slightly masocistic. I don't know. JARROD: I want to kill you. I want to blow you.... away. ******************** Q28: >From Lawrence J. Kim What effect if any did traveling all around the world have on you. POE: There are positive things and negative things. I think that I am the most unjudgemental person in the world. THere are so many different worlds. THat is why I think that I like so many different forms of music. It is weird to say. Ya! I'm a punk rocker. Find your own thing and do what feels right. I remember that there was this woman who used to watch me and my brother in Africa. I remember just sitting there and listening and she didn't speak any english so the only way that we could communicat was through percussion. That was magic. The negative side about moving around is that you are not rooted. I felt very much like an outsider for most of my childhood. I would come into a new culture or setting I would feel like a vouyer because I knew that I would not be there long enough to be an indeginous part of that culture.I felt very much like an outsider. That was very alienating. And that was OK while my parents were still together. When they separated I went through some really hard times trying to figure it out. Find my place in the world. It is not like I cam from somewhere and have some roots. Like I didn't go to Kindergarden here type of thing. Nobody knew me really well. So when my family split up... That was the hardest thing in the world. I don't think that would have been as hard if we didn't jump around as much. It is catch 22. I learned a lot and I hurt too. I think that is just life. JARROD: Amen ********************************** Q29: >From Sparkie... Why do you not have your ears pierced? POE: YOu would be surprised that I actually have four holes in my right ear. It has been awhile since I have worn earings. I don't know why. I just went through this time when I took them all out. I think.... I could get Freudian on it. I don't know. I just stopped wearing earings. There was a moment when the band traded a piece of jewelery. Toby (the bass player) gave me a stud. So now I have a stud in my right ear. It is an interesting question though. Cause... I don't know why. JARROD: Get Freudian POE.... :-) ***************************** Q30: Who is your favorite Beatle? POE: I think my favorite was Paul McCartney.... I have always loved bass players since I was a little kid. I mean a crush on bass players. I know that John Lennon was this wacky out there lead singer and I love him for that too. BUT.... Paul McCartney.... I don't know what it is. I have this thing for bass players. They are the foundation.... I though that he was an amazing songwriter and arranger. Where as John Lennon was the personality of the whole band. McCartney had this melow vibe.... and... So much music in him and I kind of respected the fact that he didn't buy into the whole rock star thing. As cheesy as it was to bring Linda on he road it was cool. He was older and that relationship mattered enough to him to give her a place in her life. I mean as a woman at that time she would have doomed herself to be a groupy for the rest of her life. Travel. Be Paul McCartneys wife.... He cared enough about her to give her a name of her own and a sense of self respect and integrity. Which gave her a lot more courage in the future to release her photographs and just take herself seriously. The Beatles were an exception. Whether you love her or hate her... Yoko was not a dumb girl. She was a wacky chick. ********************************************************************** Clint Doyle, CNA | "And the license said you had to stick around hcdoyle@direct.ca | until I was dead, But if you're tired of hcdoyle@poe.org | looking at my face I guess I already am" cdoyle1@hotmail.com | "Divorce Song" - Liz Phair ------------------------------ End of angry-psychos-digest V3 #210 ***********************************
