To that end, Levar - who is coping with AIDS - has extended a personal invitation to all Rochester, New York-area radio stations to play Poe's "Rise and Shine" on June 15th at 5PM. Written by Poe with backing vocals and inspiration provided by Levar himself, the simultaneous broadcast is aimed at raising awareness to the struggles of those young people struggling with HIV/AIDS. The song, which also includes backing vocals from Gwen Stefani of No Doubt, was produced by Poe and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge (No Doubt, Savage Garden, Bad Religion). The "Rise & Shine" CD-only single is exclusively available at music retail outlets throughout the Rochester area. The Atlantic Group and Poe will donate all their proceeds from the CD sales directly to L.A.F.F. (the Levar And Friends Fund), a not-for-profit organization founded by Levar and his adoptive mother Roberta Halter. - - more - - - 2 - The fund provides children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS with the chance to take time out to be a kid, away from the world of doctors. L.A.F.F. works with other local agencies to connect families with health services and outreach organizations. L.A.F.F. sponsors a number of summer camps and supports a wide variety of recreational services: picnics, outings to amusement parks, sporting events, concerts. "These events not only provide a break from the daily routine, but they encourage interaction and a sense of family and community among the kids," says Roberta. On the education front, L.A.F.F. provides information on nutrition, medical terminology associated with HIV/AIDS, and the social issues and stigmas that often arise with infected or affected children. The L.A.F.F. network offers families a forum to further share and discuss theses issues. Through its speakers forum, the organization works to bring a greater awareness to the realities of life with HIV/AIDS. Under this program, Levar himself has appeared before the New York State Legislature in Albany. And who is Levar? In the words of Roberta Halter, "Levar Logan Halter is twelve-year-old boy who likes rollerblading, playing video games, and helping other kids like himself. Levar was born with HIV and has had full blown AIDS for some time now. More recently, he has been diagnosed with brain cancer. It's been a tough life for Levar dealing first with the death of his parents, both of - - more - - - 3 - whom had the AIDS virus, and then with his cancer. Through Poe's music, however, he has been able to better cope with feelings of aggression, sadness, and joy." Levar first preformed with Poe on May 17, 1997 during a trip to Rochester, where she was performing as part of a WNVE "The Nerve" FM-sponsored fund-raising concert to benefit L.A.F.F. At the time, Levar was undergoing radiation therapy for cancer and his ultimate prognosis was doubtful. While their two worlds were spinning in completely different orbits, a harmonic convergence of sorts took place. Poe and Levar just clicked. "The concert raised $20,000 but Levar was real sick that day," says Roberta. "Everyone was very concerned. I remember Poe asked Levar if he would like to hear himself on the radio one day. Naturally, he said, 'That would be awesome... Mom, I'm gonna be on a song with Poe.'" And so the "Rise and Shine" project was born. Levar drew great enthusiasm and inspiration from Poe and her music, not to mention the prospect of working with her. As a result, his health started to improve. As Halter says, "It was a small project for a little boy, but as work on the song progressed so did Levar's health... and the more his health improved, the larger the project became. Well, it's been a year since that first meeting and the song is complete. It's more exciting than anyone could have imagined. Levar's health is doing good and his hopes are high. As long as he forsees a future for - - more - - - 4 - himself, we all think he just might have this licked. Levar loves the idea of helping other kids and that's what truly keeps him motivated. Thanks to Poe and a lot of other really great people, Levar now can hear himself on the radio and know that, not only is he a star to all of us, he is now a star to those who haven't met him yet." * * * * * Earlier this year, Poe contributed her song, "Today," to the Atlantic Records soundtrack to the motion picture Great Expectations. Just last summer, she hit #1 on the Billboard "Hot Dance Music/Club Play" chart with the remix release of "Hello." The song is heard in its original form on the artist's 1995 RIAA gold debut album, "HELLO." As the album's third single, the title track was a hit at alternative outlets nationwide. Poe is continuing work on her second label album. # # # ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Jun 1998 15:48:01 EDT From: JUnKiEpOe@aol.com Subject: a.p.`s on long island hey i just wanted to know if ne a.p.`s live on long island if so email me we can hang song that makes me cry that day n a rose is a rose by poe ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Jun 1998 17:01:21 EDT From: N1TECAT@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR: More Horrible Birthday Fun Ok the birthday stuff is getting way to old.
