[John Beadle ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 02 Jun 1998 00:19:43 -0500 (EST) From: Brian Hugenbruch Subject: (Mostly NPR) Album, Dead Puppies, and the First Amendment I'll get the important stuff out of the way first: I'm psyched that there's a new POE album on its way soon. (As someone who only owns the original "Hello" CD, the new stuff is highly anticipated.) (This is where the Poe-Related Stuff ends. I checked my mail this evening after being severely beaten in physical sport, and I find a great debate in progress ... or, at the very least, winding down. My two cents are about to follow, but bear with me: it's a parable. And please, hold your applause, jeers, or indifferent responses until the Rant has come to a complete stop.) Has anyone ever seen the movie "The Doom Generation"? It's a (very poor) satire on violence in today's society, with some sex and drugs mixed in to boot. (I don't recommend it.) I remember the first time I saw it, I was sitting in a friend's room while visiting his college, and a scene progressed where a shopping clerk had his head blown off by a shotgun, and it lands in the produce department. Everyone in the room laughs. A very long hour later, the car in which the main adventurers are travelling hits a dog in the road (unintentionally). It's suffering badly, and (after conflict) it is put out of its misery. Everyone in the room moans, wimpers, feels for the dog. (One person even started crying.) It seems to me that every living thing is important in its own way. I do my best to kill absolutely nothing (saving for insects). IF nothing else, I know I wouldn't want a god-like being to kill me. I obviously don't see the human race as a perfect machine, but a person, to me, is more important than an animal. I would rather save a person I'd never met than any pet I'd ever owned (although it'd be close). I don't advocate the torturing, extermination, etc., of animals. (My feelings on animal testing, on the other hand, would simply starrt another debate, so I won't bother.) But a pack of wolves would be more likely (any cannibalistic tendencies aside) to protect one of its brethren than to save, sayy, a lion or a chicken. I feel the same way about people. Not less important; just a matter of priority, if I'm in the position where I have to choose only one. There's a point somewhere in here, I'm sure. I would point out, though, whether your priorities place humans or manatees first, everyone (even people whom some people think everyone should ignore) has the right to an opinion. If you ever doubt that, take a gander at Orwell's "1984." In a world of PC-Monitors protecting the rights of everyone, we seem to have forgotten an important concept: the right to free speech. You know, that quaint little concept which gives us the right to have a mailing list about POE, and yet hardly every discuss Her In All Her Glory (and I mean every word of that). The only problem is, you have to take the good with the bad (at least in public -- any private arguments, hey, go for it, just keep it private HINT HINT HINT HINT HINT). Now, in accordance with Mailing List Policy, I would ask that no one send out a "Yeah! Right on!" message -- you know, so as not to piss off everyone. Likewise, I would ask that any hate-mail (for people who are all for Suppression of Free Thought and who think I'm all for killing every living thing on the planet, despite my letter) please me redirected to me personally: adept@poe.org ... so that we don't piss off the rest of the List with an argument that is, essentially, private (HINT HINT). In conclusion, I'd like to invoke the words of Dennis Miller: "But of course that's just my opinion. I could be wrong." .... but it's MY opinion, and I'm glad that I'm allowed to have it. I've seen lotsa people leave in the past cuz of this, people trying to turn the ap's on one person, and lots of people adding to the chaos (As I am sort of doing right now). I'm at least glad to note that I do not see the older ap's joining in on this, as (I think) they have learned from experience to try and let it die down, but I'm not really one to keep his mouth shut when he should, so I'm just kinda babbling here. I just haveta say a couple of (dozen) things: 1. Please don't attack someone on the list to the list. Flames are personal, they should be sent TO the person, not to 400 other peoplez. 2. By the way I have an opinion about animal testing and I choose to say it because as long as we are on the subject of animals might as well bring it up. i also think it is fun to argue over opinions.
