Anyway, I don't know if any of you remember him, but one of the early psychos was this guy Roger Knox. He was around a long time ago and was a good person to have a conversation with before he went into exile. And, he was involved in an argument with a lot of the other psychos at the time about a notion to create a Poe News ONLY list. The idea was shot down, eventually Roger went into exile, and we continued to whine about the trivialities in our pathetic lives and argue about whether or not we love the new Hanson Puff Daddy remix. It's been a good year or so since that point. I guess we're due for another hailstorm. Oh wait, El Nino isn't around anymore is it? A concerned psycho- eXej ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 May 1998 00:52:45 -0700 (PDT) From: "etherea l. thea" Subject: Tori on the AP List Hey APs, As the argument over having NPR:Tori posts on the list comes to an END, I just wanted to point out that people have a right to complain over these things; but they may be making a bigger deal out of it than it really is. I mean, right now, there's sort of a lull in Poe news as we wait to hear about the new album and for little pieces of news here and there. So naturally, people fill in the void by talking about other things. As long as they label them "NPR:Tori" or "NPR:I got a dog" or whatever, the people who are here only for Poe topics can just skip over them. Whether they like it or not, the Angry Psychos IS a community of people who like to talk about different things, and even get into extensive arguments once in a while (which is healthy and normal...I mean think of how boring this list would be if we couldn't have any side talk). I'm not saying that we should all go and start posting a bunch of NPR messages just because, but the ones that have been posted are better than having huge gaps where no one says anything for a long time until they hear something new about Poe. Just like in every community, there are trade-offs. You get to communicate with people who share a common interest and find out about things that are going on with Poe....at the same time, people talk about other things that aren't related to Poe, and it might annoy you that people post news about other artists, but hey, it's better than no Poe news and no APs after all. AP love, Leona _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 May 1998 10:14:07 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine Lewis Subject: my $.02 Just going to chime in my $.02 on the NPR wars. Jon, I usually agree with most of what you say, but i'm going to have to disagree violently on the "Poe or nothing" thing. Look, for example, at the initial email everyone sends: we say our name, age, where we're from, how we first heard Poe, and WHAT OTHER MUSIC WE LISTEN TO. Although i usually end up skimming most people's responses to that question instead of reading word-for-word everything that is listed, you can usually get a fairly good idea of the types of stuff people listen to. Yes, we are a community, and we are joined by our love of Poe and her music. However, if all i did all day was think about and talk about Poe, i'd be a pretty boring person, no? We do, unfortunately, have not a whole lot of Poe-related news right now. As most people notice, when something about Poe happens, the list tends away from NPR and tends towards more Poe-stuff. I'm thinking specifically about the release of the "hello" single and also Poe's jammy on MRL. As of right now, as we're waiting for the new album, and there seems to be a little lull in the Poe news. So people start talking about other things for which there IS a lot of news. Most recently, that was the new Tori album; people said why they liked it, and perhaps people said why they didn't like it. I personally just scrolled past those messages as Tori doesn't really interest me. Ani DiFranco does, so the messages on Alana Davis's "32 flavors" cover were ones that i did read (and, in some cases, respond to, although by private email as opposed to posting to the list). There are several possible solutions to this: One, as Jon suggested, is to eliminate all non-Poe stuff from the list. I think that would be pretty damn boring, myself. I know i've "discovered" some really terrific music based on the suggestions from people on the mailing lists to which i subscribe; stuff I wouldn't necessarily have bought otherwise, but which I listen to a lot now. If the "NPR" stuff helps me grow and expand in terms of my music taste, that is a good thing. (Although i would tend to doubt that many people rushed out and bought the Tori album based on what people on the list said -- she's mainstream enough now that most people have formed an opinion of her.) Another solution is to be more strict on the subject headings of emails. Even when something says, "NPR: Tori", i tend to skim it anyway, just to make sure that it really _is_ all about Tori. So if you're posting something not poe-related, make sure to be specific in your subject heading, for purposes of "easy deleting", for those of us who might not care. That is, after all, the point of prefacing it with "NPR". A third solution is somewhat more difficult to implement, but might be the best long-term solution. The listserver for the Ani DiFranco list i'm on has divided it into 3: RBR-News, RBR-Focus, and RBR-Fans. the "News" list is specifically for news (and doesn't get used all that often). The "Focus" list is specifically for Ani-related material -- her shows, lyrics, albums, etc. The "Fans" list is for stuff that might not necessarily relate directly to Ani, but ranges anywhere from Ani to other Ani-related music (and also, sometimes annoyingly so, to peoples' private crises). If stuff on the "Focus" list gets too off-topic, people are asked to take that discussion either to private email or to the "Fans" list. Although this hierarchy does seem to be a good idea, I think we as a community of angry-psychos, and i think we get to be closer by learning what types of people each other is. If i could subscribe SOLELY to the "Poe" part, i doubt that i would feel as attached to the list, and to the people on it (even though most of my time here is spent lurking). I think it all boils down to this: if we're a community, we should know more about each other than just the fact that we like Poe. If all i wanted from this mailing list was just a source of Poe news, i wouldn't have joined in the first place. Most of us were seeking a venue through which we could talk to, and get to know, other Poe fans. and "getting to know" usually involves learning more about someone than just "Hey, i like Poe". Which is why i mentioned at the beginning that when we introduce ourselves, we don't just say, "Hi, i'm Cath and I like Poe." That's the sort of thing for AA meetings, not for music mailing lists. The very nature of our introductions is to say, "hey, i'm multi-dimensional. yes, i love poe. But there's more to me than just that." I guess what i'm trying to say is that i think eliminating all NPR stuff from the list might be a bad thing in the long run. Although I think several people are quite annoyed by the Tori thing, i don't think that's necessarily justified (although some of the discussion of the new Tori album has gotten somewhat out of hand and should, perhaps, be moved to private email instead of posting to the list). There's a proverb that goes, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." and i think the analogy could be drawn that all Poe-related-stuff might make this list pretty boring. Because even if you might get frustrated with some of the NPR stuff, that's the nature of a community -- we don't have to all get along smashingly all the time. Although I can almost guarantee you that when the new album comes out, the list will be overwhelmed with Poe stuff, whether it be comments on the songs, information about tours, or whatever. So if the NPR stuff really bothers you, just sit tight until then -- you'll have more than enough PR stuff when there's enough PR stuff to be had. :) Thank you for reading. :) Cath - -- "You don't look for a treasure you have found: Why do you hunt when you've been hunted down....?" -- Velvet Chain ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 09 May 1998 10:07:53 -0400 From: Robby Black Subject: POE Trivia Question Here is a question for all of you..
