I guess I shouldn't be surprised though. I have seen our "Civil Rights" chewed on for years now, ignored by a public fearful of crime. People are willing to look the other way, Rodney King happens everyday. We sentence our brothers and sisters to prisons holding more addicts than criminals. Perhaps they were stopped at one of the randomly assembled road blocks they put up in select neighborhoods around here (Rochester NY) . Shuffled through the special "Drug Court" and off to one of the newley built or expanded but always overcrowed prisons. We have more of everything, Police, Courts, Prisons, and Crime. Black market activities always thrive in third world nations, that is what we have become, wittness the repressive measures the public devours with glee, nightly on "Cops" TV You think I digress, but no my point is this. Our government goes about making precedent setting laws to a receptive public, that has been lulled into submission as a victim of the addict and a suspect of the law. Censorship should not even extend to the 'gangsta rap' that was mentioned here a few days ago.Who draws the lines? If you dont like it ,dont buy it. If your kids buy it and you dont like it,take it away and beat the crap out of them. There are two evils here, and a greater good. The first evil is the use of exploitative language that possesses no artistic or social value, language that's intended to harm, to incite violence, or to objectify people sexually. The second evil is censorship, and the belief in censorship. That anyone except an individual (him or herself)--whether church, state, or another entity--should be given, with or without the people's consent, the right to think for another, to determine for another what thought is or is not acceptable, or to deny another access to thought is an evil far greater than the 1st, an evil of sheer arrogance, and an evil which is clearly anti-Democratic and anti-American. Such arguments of "serving the greater good" by banning depictions of violence or sexuality are commonly the first step to greater erosions of our most basic value--freedom of speech. Once people are convinced that it's okay to remove what the majority might consider offensive, it's a small step then to removing what the majority might simply not understand, e.g. Picasso, abstract expressionist art, James Joyce novels, due to their supposed "perverse" content. The greater good, of course, at least in the U.S.A., is the fact of our 1st Amendment, protecting the individual from state, church and other entities who would violate or erode our freedoms of speech, press, religion and assembly. I'm willing to put up with "gangsta rap" which I find patently ugly, boorish, non-sensical and counter-productive; I'm willing to put up with pornographic movies that have no legitimate artistic content, no character development, and no plot, that basically places people on the level of humping dogs; I'm even willing to put up with the bizarre and paranoid right wing racist propaganda.... because, quite simply, I am a writer, and the erosion of another's rights usually signal the erosion of mine. As human beings, we are presented with an array of options that present themselves to our minds. We are presented with art, with beauty, with democratic principles, and we are able to compare art with pornography (according to James Joyce, anything that incites in its audience the desire to possess the object portrayed is pornographic--which includes, of course, all television commercials!); we are able to compare the beauty of nature to the ugliness of human beings violating others; we are able to compare our cherished principles of freedom with the oppressions of socialism, facism and communism, where poets, writers, artists and composers are imprisoned, tortured, exiled, or banned. It's a simple question, really. Are we human beings, primarily, or are we, rather, mere cogs in a vast machine? If less-than-human, if "parts" of a machine, then it's okay to erode freedoms, which, after all, only interfere with productivity and social harmony...we can't have people actually QUESTIONING, now, can we? If, however, we are truly human, endowed with intelligence, discernment, and the basic rights of dignity and inquiry, then even the most offensive expressions must be tolerated. How odd that, only a few years ago, as Tipper Gore (I like her husband, but I can't stand her) lauded attempts to censor song lyrics, the people in China were sacrificing their lives to a certain Goddess they called "Liberty". Pearl Jam too - just thought I'd add that in there. the thing with bootleg CDs is that it's done for profit and it's greedy. Trading tapes is great because both people come out of the deal feeling richer than before. I look forward to the day when bootleggers are completely put out of business by the internet - I've already downloaded about 15 concerts and burned them onto CDs... and traded them with others. If I bought those CDs at a damn bootlegger store, it'd be like 40-50 dollars each. No thanks. SO... if there happen to be any APs out there who looked at and/or applied to and were accepted to and/or attend either grinnell and/or earlham college, i would SO appreciate it if you would mail me and tell me why you chose to apply/go to these colleges and/or why you chose not to. i am so bad at decisions. i'm looking for all the advice i can get.
