[Zorrine ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 03:24:05 -0400 From: agentorange2@juno.com (Rusty M Shelby) Subject: NPR: "torn" the REAL story ok.. listen up kids... here is the dirt behind the song "torn", my educated opinion. I knew of the band Ednaswap first. I heard there was a new singer covering their song "Torn". So, I started looking. If you look at the credits in Natalie Imbruglia's and/or Ednaswap's cd cover, it lists these 3 names as credit to the song "Torn" (Thornalley/Cutler/Preven). Cutler and Preven are members of the band Ednaswap. This Thornally person IS the whole other story. Thornally worked either for and/or with Natalie Imbruglia on her latest cd. He/She wrote and/or co-wrote 5 other songs on her cd. I am sure this person just wanted Natalie to sing the song he/she co-wrote in hopes it would succeed this time around. And guess what.. it did. This Thornally person has just as much right to the song as the 2 members of Ednaswap do. So, this is not really a Natalie vs. Ednaswap deal. It's all about this Thornally person re-using a song. And like someone mentioned yeaterday... the song has been covered many times before, but was just never this big of a hit. - -rusty ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ web page: (updated 03/28/98) http://www.cantnot.org/rusty _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I am a torch singer- meaning I sing classic jazz. I have worked for 16 years to reach the level of vocal skill that I have acheived. For 9 years, I have know that the area of music I wanted to pursue is jazz, and I have worked towards that goal. If you knew what becoming a truly good singer entailed, I think you would not make these comments. If you applied your logic to something outside your immediate sphere, you'd have to say that Beverly Sills or Maryanne Battle pisses you off (presumably you pissed off at them for being famous despite their lack of talent). The voice- whether you know it or not- is an instrument, and one that is extremely difficult to play well. >> Certainly, to find a good vocalist is difficult. It is a god-given talent that singers work very hard on. I wish I had that talent. But I think the feelings Liz described are the same feelings many songwriters and musicians feel. I really doubt she meant it as a broad sweeping statement against all vocalists of all styles. But too many musicians and songwriters see the vocalists of different bands, or those who go through music publishing catalogs for their next albums, get all the credit and 'star' treatment, when they didn't write the song. The songwriter usually stays behind the scenes. We all have different gifts, but don't all get equal recognition. That definitely helps clear up the picture. Anne: I felt raped and then taken out for a fancy dinner. Dustin: How much of the lyrics of Torn did Phil Thornalley write? Anne: ZERO For the full interview see http://www.cantnot.org/ednaswap/interviews.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 20:17:44 EDT From: GalaxyGrab Subject: Re: NPR "Torn" Oh,yea, I am TOTALLY aware of that, but a lot of the Jazz musicians, the good ones mind you, wrote their own music. And yea, i know that a lot of people don't write their own music. Kurt Cobain wrote all of the music for courtney love. Jewel doesn't even write all of her own music. I am completely aware of that, but it pisses me off because other people aren't aware of the real talent. but whatever, i don't want to get into a heated discussion about it, if it isn't already too late, because it's a matter of opinion. liz ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 21:20:16 EDT From: Zorrine Subject: i'm new here... dear angry psychos, hi! my name is jess and i'm from cheltenham (near philadelphia). i'm a seventeen year old senior (going to college!!!
