Looking for a sign that I should open the door. This craziness is getting me down But today is the day we break free Walking down the stairway to the traffic below. Anything could happen I know. But I'm sick of everybody telling me what to do I hear you Hey but I already know And Today is the day we break free * * * * * * * * * * * Chorus: It's clear in my mind after all of this time what I feel my love There are so many times that the sun doesn't shine but I'm here my love And Today is the day * * * * * * * * * * * Maybe I should wait just a minute or two It's getting cold now I feel so insecure The future is a mistress that is so hard to please and the past is a pebble in my shoe But today is the day we break free CHORUS ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 1998 13:06:29 -0800 (PST) From: Jiamin Tang Subject: Hiya peoples! Hi! I guess I'm fairly new to poe.org, even though I've known about it since summer. Anyway, I'm 19, female, a sophomore at UCDavis majoring in math (maybe). I bought POE's CD when she first got famous, or rather, when Trigger came out on radio here in California. I like all kinds of music, but I'm listening more to Christian Alternative. If you're interested, I would suggest some Plankeye. I like No Doubt, the Doors, the Beatles, and stuff like that. Nice meeting you peopels. . . I don't do Poe Mp3s because I think people should just plunk down the 10 bucks for the remix single or whatever. and poe needs the record sales. > Ok.. first of all let me explain what I'm contemplating doing... I forget exactly - any true Ani fan knows what a funny and random person she is in concert - and since she says so many different things most the time, it's hard to remember it all - esp in the way she can put it... so it was halloween, and she was talking about all these different things that sort of had to do with the holiday but also didn't - in a wierd ani random way I guess... and so she broke into this one part where she was tlking about success... she was saying how recently she was getting a lot of attention and so it was harder and harder to put a lot of effort into watching over work and how things were all working out. (esp regarding copywright laws and stuff, I assume) she was making fun of herself - like imitating an assembly line - "oh I'll sign that - ok, I'll sign that too, now I'll sign that, next next next" ... and she said that the damn rip off cover [the one we're all referring to] landed in that pile and before she realized what she had done, this other girl had the rights to 32 flavors' lyrics. She heard it a few months later, and by that time, the person that stole the lyrics had gone from no one to someone with more airtime then her. so here's my best shot at a real quote: :) "yeah.. so - I started gettin' in the grove.. this grove, you know - of just signing anything and everything that fell in my lap. Which has been strange you know.. it's like, well... you are supposed to write the song and *let go* of it... you know, like it's everyone else's at that point and it ceases to be yours.. so anyway, I was signing away, just paying no attention, and when this girl's proposal fell into my lap, I just kept up the pattern I was used to, you know - yeah, I'll sign that, I'll endorse that, sure I'll be there, no problem. so then a few months later, I hear this song that sounds *peculiarly* like 32 flavors. (people start booing I think; mixed with cheering due to the mention of 32 flavors) the thing is.. it's not that I ... I dunno... (she stutters a lot here, trying to pick words correctly) it's just that she *took* some stuff out... you know? and she ... I dunno... she put *other* stuff in... (wrinkles her nose, but still doesn't say anything) ... [then someone else screamed from the top balcony, "IT SUCKS!" and Ani giggled and smiled like she was saying "I know" with her eyes. but she was too polite to badmouth it outloud. ] anyway, that was TOTALLY paraphrased - I'll go back and listen to the bootleg and realize how wrong I was.. most likely... but the mood is definately there. ani doesn't like it, but she knows it's her fault, too. and she won't publicly badmouth it. ;) I've got tons more funny stuff she said at that show if anyone's interested. P.S. - up there I said something like "getting in the grove" .... I meant getting in the "groove" .. oops, blush, chuckle. ************************************************************ * http://jragon.linex.com * ************************************************************ Lots of strange art by me ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 1998 19:32:34 -0500 From: Flickergrl Subject: grammy nominations .c The Associated Press NEW YORK (Jan. 6) - Here is the list of nominees for the Grammy Awards, which will be presented on February 25th in New York. 1. Crazy idea....But I'd like your opinions. Geez, I think y'all need to lighten up a bit. The woman has every right to record any damn Ani DiFranco song she wants to as long as she pays her for it. I've never heard the original song, and I haven't heard the cover, but that's beside the point. To say she 'stole' the song is silly. I find it amazing how snobbish some music fans can be sometimes... especially those who have never even picked up an instrument. They can go on and on telling you why this band is cool, but this other one isn't because they're 'sell-outs' or 'mainstream'. Gimme a break. If you like it, buy the cd, go see the show, but don't whine about someone covering a song, unless it happens to be Puff Daddy. In that case, I understand. If Ani chooses to be anti-establishment and not get the airplay or the sales or all the fame she would get if she went 'mainstream', that's her CHOICE and she has to live by it, good or bad. If someone else capitalizes on the fact that more people have never heard her music than have, and re-record one of her songs, then too bad. That's the way it goes here. No offense meant. :) Gaul Aiel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 1998 20:58:21 -0500 From: Kitana Subject: Re: NPR: Pics Since a lot of you seemed to like the picture idea, I'll start it off! I am very defensive over my music, and can come off a little egotistical. I'm not saying Ani's been raped, and sure it's her own fault. But it's still a crying shame since the song was so good and was turned into something so bad. (in my opinion) ... and it's not even that the remake is THAT bad. it's just that the original is a classic and it'll be clouded over by the damn remake. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 1998 20:36:20 EST From: Mettic1 Subject: Great Expectations soundtrack i just got the soundtrack, but i've probably listened to less than half of it (something i always do now. i can't listen to a whole cd anymore). anywho, i've got to say that it is excellent. the tori amos song is utterly amazing, and "life in mono" is real cool too. chris cornell and scott weilland also have songs on the album, and they are both ok. as for "today," it so far hasn't really stuck with me yet. it's very quirky, but i've recently been on a total padre fear thing and i suppose i've kind of been expecting today to sound something like it. i do like it, however, not just because it's pOe. the ending is real wild. anyone who might have misgivings about the soundtrack should take out that wad of cash and buy it. - -lee ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 1998 18:34:25 -0800 From: Karen Miller Subject: what the hay... hello i'm new and i wanna post somethign so here it is: In the dreams, I have you pretend to love her but you really love me at night when she's asleep you always come and see me. we make love for hours on end and when morning come you must slip away to her. i am a writer, i have written many poems, stories and whatever i feel, = poe has helped me write some of my poems and thats why i joined the = list. jen what my friends call me real name :holly ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 1998 18:25:42 -0800 (PST) From: Jon Bell Subject: 1/2 NPR contest Hey everyone! I was just sitting here reading all this stuff about Ani DiFranco and the cover by whats her name.. (and all the responses I got asking for the bootleg I referred to) ... and I thought to myself, "geez! lots of people read this digest, don't they?" and then I was reading back in my archives to when I was offering the poe interview (if you can call it an interview) that I have on tape.. and I must have gotten 30 people asking for a copy of that. sheeh. and I thought, "people really really read this thing! they just don't always have something to say, that's all" (this has a point, I promise) so then I was thinking about all those people... imagine if every one of us could somehow trade every bootleg we have with each other, share every story, and just be one collective mass of people? what a thought! ... and then, (this is the final random thought) I thought of all the great things I have to share with people that I kind of take for granted. I've got bootlegs, I love to talk about Poe experiences (and other concerts/meetings) and so on... so why not give some of it away? why not just be as communal as I can possibly be? share all my music, press Poe CD bootlegs (I just got a recordable CD-Rom) give away art, etc etc... so - here's my idea. My webpage is an art gallery. It's all the art I've gotten around to scanning. There's still a lot I need to put up, but there's approx 75 pieces up right now. Something like that. Exposure means a lot to me - ... Poe once said she'd do anything to get me syndicated and that was such a loving, inspirational comment that I think of it every day to try to encourage myself to never give up art. like "well if Poe thinks I'm good, I better not disappoint her, let alone myself"... So here's the deal. My counter is at around 500 or 600 or so. I'm going to give away stuff for every time the counter hits 100... if you like Ani, I can give you a bootleg, or if you have a tape that you really want made into a CD, I could do that, or maybe a Poe autograph if you're an unlucky soul that hasn't gotten one, or if you like my art, I'd be more than happy to give some away to anyone that likes it.. so go to my art webpage.. there's a couple pieces up there for Poe (album covers, CD graphics, tee shirt designs, etc) and the rest is just random. however, all the art is scanned at the lowest possible quality w/out butchering the quality, so it loads up very quickly. tell your friends! help out a starving (literally) artist! and if you go to my page and the counter is at 600 or 700 or 800 or some hundred, send me some email. I'll do my best to help you out in any way I can. and for the person who breaks 1,000... well I've got an idea, but I'll just wait until it happens. hey - even if you don't like my art but you want some publicity - visit my page and I'll link mine to yours... whatever I can do for people .. right now publicity is the most driving force in my life. here's my webpage; ************************************************************ * http://jragon.linex.com * ************************************************************ Lots of strange art by me thanks! ------------------------------ End of angry-psychos-digest V3 #6 *********************************
