She knows I am a freak (I believe I am the third or fourth biggest freak in my school... oh, maybe fifth.. well, somewhere in the top ten....) so she thinks she's a Marilyn Manson-esque punkrocker. I tried explaining but I couldn't. Maybe it's 'cos my fave song is Trigger Happy Jack and I was telling her about how the guitar parts are so cool... I don't know... I think you have to LISTEN to feel. POE is special that way. You don't understand unless you hear her. My friend Shayna had never heard of POE but I played Another World 'cos I thought she'd like it, and now she believes me when I say a band or singer kicks ass. NUMERO DOS: (I took Spanish 1 and I'm in 2 just so I could do that!!) My list of the CD's I have purchased this year, and their reviews: Indigo Girls (Rites of Passage): Pretty damn good, if you're in the mood. My favorite songs are Three Hits, Galileo, Joking, and Romeo & Juliet. It's really good when you're feeling deep but positive. Jewel (Pieces of You): I've seen her in concert performing these songs, and they're even better live, most of 'em. But this again is really good if you're feeling peaceful. My favorite is I'm Sensitive, 'cos it's cute. Romeo & Juliet Sdtrk: I bought it 'cos of the Garbage song, and other than that, the Everclear song and about two others, it's kind of boring. Lovefool gets on your nerves after about three plays, and that Gavin Friday song pisses me off occasionally. Some of it is great though- I love the You and Me song. Spice Girls (Spice): Well, I hate to say it, but it's not bad if you're in the mood. Maybe I'm posessed by Evil Poe, but I kind of like it occasionally. It's fun to be idiotic sometimes. Besides, know that Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon"/Wizard of Oz thing? There's one with Spice/Mission: Impossible. I discovered it. It's cool. Like, when he's climbing up the rope it plays "You have got to reach on up/never lose control..." POE (Hello): DO I REALLY NEED A REVIEW? Each song is different, POE is a very thoughtful, real person, and I love it. OK?? Hanson (Middle of Nowhere): It's too perky. Other than that, it's good and the guitar parts are sorta fun. They'd be more fun if Ike didn't look like a cow. I like "Yearbook" personally. 311 (Transistor): My cousin got this for me a month before it was released anywhere. I also had the demo tape, but someone stole it. Anyway, it's way more annoying than the original. I love 311 and all, but this CD sucked. Techno's all well and good, but it sounds subhuman. Honeyrods (Honeyrods): No one's ever heard of them, but they're pretty good. Nice sound, good vocals, interesting views. "I lost your room key, so sue me, would you be, int'rested, in hearing what I have to say for myself..." That's my current favorite, Soap Opera. Nirvana (Nevermind): This needs no explanation. It rules. I bought it 'cos of Butch Vig and all, but it just rules. All of it. It's my favorite CD to crank up when I'm practicing my guitar. Nirvana. All the way. Chumbawamba (Tubthumper): I thought they said they were PUNK!! This is DANCE!! Whatever, it's not very deep but it has a good sound. Maybe I'd be able to review this if I didn't keep having to leave every time I got to around track five... Smash Mouth (Fush Yu Mang): This is really good. I'm serious. Not deep, but the sound is excellent and there's a lot of energy. Walkin' On The Sun wasn't just a fluke; the whole thing is decent. Fiona Apple (Tidal): Beautiful. Gorgeous. Super keen. Neatorific. Nifty. Fantasterrific. Whatever. This CD is great. It's really deep, and it touches you. Most POE fans like her anyway, I don't have to say this, but whatever, it rules. Marilyn Manson (Antichrist Superstar): Believe it or not, I like this one. It gets repetitive (How many times does that line "Prick your finger it is done/the moon has now eclipsed the sun/the angel has spread its wings/the time has come for bitter things" show up?) but there's something kind of nice about getting it all out. And "Cryptochild" is kind of nice. Somehow. Hey, it shows that he experiences guilt, sort of, right?? Anyhow, no one cares. But those are my happy little year-end CD reviews. Gotta go order some free condoms to give my friend's boyfriend as Christmas presents. Better safe than sorry! I still believe this is one of the funniest albums I have ever heard. 6 Tara MacLean (Silence) A strong showing with enchanting lyrics... 5 Squirrel Nut Zippers (HOT) This album helps to redefine the music scene. If this trend catches on we could actually have to dress up to go and party!! 4 Veruca Salt (8 Arms to Hold you)- An excellent album that total rocks... 3 Beth Orton (Trailer Park)- Good, solid "alternative music" (please note this term used to mean something) If you like diverse vocals, she certainly offers a fresh look. After seeing her perform for a Live X, I fell deeply in love with her music. 2 POE- Not new this year, but does perfection ever fade... 1 One Without (Self titled- a local Atlanta band)- I liked them so much I bought the company. They are each CDs in their own right, but the idea is to play all four CDs at the very same time. They say the sound is incredible. You may not like the flaming lips, but they say it's worth listening to simply for the "wierdness" factor. Has anyone heard of this? I think it's sad that a lot of people (including me) hadn't heard of the lips until "She Don't Use Jelly" and then bought the album and never bought anything else afterwards. They've got like 7 albums or something crazy like that. I also think it's a nice change from a lot of the typical stuff coming out these days. To paraphrase Trent Reznor, "Bush? What are they doing that hasn't been done?" On the other hand, I think the lips, beck, and Poe are all bands you need to have heard to really understand.. and I think they're in their own catagory. quite an accomplishment these days with 3rd eye blind sugar pop everywhere. (I noticed there are a lot of 3eb fans posting lately.. sorry) ... so hail hail poe! and hail hail anyone that does anything a little differently. and for bands like the spice girls who are easy to listen to but hopefully will fizzle out in the next few years, oh well. They aren't the ones who are thought of as exactly "musical geniuses". So whatever. And I also know that Poe's head is in the right place in regards to orginality... so I can't wait for all these new songs. :) ************************************************************ * http://jragon.linex.com * ************************************************************ Lots of strange art by me ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Dec 1997 15:58:25 -0600 From: "Bill Holz" Subject: Re: favorite 1997 cd's Okay! Here are my two cents: 1. Veruca Salt, Eight Arms To Hold You: Awesome band, rocking album, pretty girls, rocking songs, nice melodies, intricate lyrics, skilled guitar solos... what could go wrong? 2. Sarah McLachlan, Surfacing: Sweet surrender... lovely voice, solid songwriting, beautiful music. 3. Sneaker Pimps, Becoming X: A dip into trip-hop and well worth the effort. 4. Luscious Jackson, Fever In and Fever Out: Another dip in the other direction... drums and bass... and a whole lot more. 5. The Cure, Galore: The high points of the past 10 years, some damn good classic songs, and... yeah. 6. Abra Moore, Strangest Places: I need not say more. 7. The Foo Fighters, The Colour and The Shape: Dave Grohl is a horse's ass, but he can write a damn good hook. Taylor Hawkins makes the whole band. Ok, I'm drawing a blank on '97 releases. Perennial favorites: Fiona Apple, Tidal (1996), K's Choice, Paradise In Me (1996), POE, Hello (1996), Sublime, Sublime (1996), Smashing Pumpkins, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1996?), Alanis Morissette, Jagged Little Pill (1995), Letters to Cleo, Aurora Gory Alice (1996? 95?).
