HURRAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fan-bloody-tastic news! I was out shopping for CDs yesterday, specifically looking for the Human Waste Project single. I was going everywhere, they had either sold out or had never heard of it (I shall diverse later to address this point). I was getting really annoyed, my last stop is at a small independent. I use it fairly regularly, they stock some of the cool obscure stuff I like, not a vast amount but above average. Success! I found the HWP single, I was a happy chappy. I was soon to become even happier. I was casually looking through the singles section, looking for nothing inparticular, just hoping to stumble something cool. I came across the 'Hello' single, I almost collapsed at the shock of it (no exageration!). For a while the 'Hello' album has been available here in the UK as an import only, with absolutely no singles whatsoever available here. So barely anyone here knows she exists. Was this single an import? Nope, official UK release. There you have it, Poe is now officially available in the UK. Sadly the single had been out since September and even I didn't know about it, so she's still little known. But any start is a good start. Anyways I work in a bar and the DJ on Wednesday/Saturday is pretty cool, guess what I'm going to make him play? Yeah, I'm taking Poe to the people. That's the good news, but I just have to have a whinge about crappy record stores here. I guess you guys who like stuff outside the mainstream can relate to this. Whilst looking for HWP, I went in a record store whose name I shall not mention, because 'Our Price' wouldn't want me to do that. I ask at the counter and all I get is, "huh huh huh, er it's like we only sell records that will get in to the top 40 and stuff, cos er we're like a small shop or something huh huh." As the crappy mainstream commercial chart here in England only requires 5000 sales nationwide to get into the top 10, I figure that is a tiny amount of sales per store. Therefore if they lost their blinkered 'we only sell that which definately sells' attitude, and expanded their range, then perhaps they wouldn't be a small store. They could expand, and increase profits. Am I just being too sensible here? It's not that anything outside the chart doesn't sell, it does, just in more obscure shops whose sales are not counted towards the chart. For those of you outside the UK, our chart mainly consists of manufactured bands whose only experience is singing in the shower, if that! The Spice girls are a prime example, as are crap like Boyzone, a band manufactured because of their male model looks, not singing ability. Therefore all the hard working talented bands, who try their best out of sheer passion for music, get nowhere near the financial rewards of the spice girls etc. If record shops took a different attitude, things could be different. Models should stick to modeling, music is for musicians. When the manufactured bands disappear, as they inevitably do, the real talent are still playing to small audiences, but at least they are still playing. Well, I hope my point (if record shops and others changed their attitudes, they could change the entire business for the better) wasn't lost in the rambling. That's it for me, take care guys.
