[Fricka Ling ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 28 Nov 1997 00:13:31 -0800 (PST) From: Jon Bell Subject: the name Poe, from Poe herself (by the way, don't let the subject mislead you - this is not Poe typing or anything - but I have a tape of a conversation I had with Poe- I'm acting off of that information) For anyone that needs to be versed about the name Poe and how she got it: she went to a party dressed as the plague from a edgar allen poe story, blah blah blag... people started calling her little poe at the party, and then it turned to poe- and it really stuck. poe herself says he doesn't respond to Annie anymore -it's her official name, but means nothing esle to her.. (my name is jon, she likened it to someone saying hey jonathan!) .. she said by the time she got into college, it was such an accepted name that when her brother would call her dorm and ask for "poe" a lot of times for the first year of college, there was confusion- people would look on the dorm list and see no Poe - same with classes.. so college was the only time she really had to deal with lettong people know she was Poe and not Annie.. I think it's odd that we all want to know her name like some trivia question or something. I remember back in June of 1996 when I first met her and asked her what her real name is, she rolled her eyes and asked "why does *everyone* want to know that?" ... then, of course, she laughed and I realized she didn't really care too much.. just don't call her Annie. :) hope that helps people. ********************************************************************** *Want to see some wierd art? *** www.clark.net/pub/jragon *** ********************************************************************** and god help you if you are a pheonix and you dare to rise up from the ash a thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy while you are just flying ~ani difranco ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Nov 1997 05:55:26 PST From: "sTeFAniE scHWaRtZ" Subject: Poe's Real Name (I Think) I read somewhere that Annie Danielewski was Poe's real name. Is that true or am I stupid? Yes, Annie Danielewski is Poe's true name. At least, I read that in an article somewhere... at least the last name's right, 'cos she keeps thanking Danielewskis at the end of the thank-yous in Hello... And Poe calls herself Poe because Mr. Edgar inspired her, or she's a poet, or..... what? I vaguely remember something about she's been called Poe since she was a kid OK, here's what I got from the same article: She has loved "Mr. Edgar" since she was a kid, and her mom even used to call her "Poeski." I think there's more info on that on the recordlabel site... But I'm not sure... On whether or not she's a poet, she wrote songs and I guess that qualifies. - -stefanie ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Everything Garbage- http://www.everythingarbage.base.org "I am sweet. It is a monthly newsletter which focuses on female rock musicians, and female-driven bands, including: Veruca Salt, K's Choice, Fiona Apple, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette, Poe, Luscious Jackson, the Indigo Girls, Lush, the Sneaker Pimps, and Letters to Cleo (and anyone else worthy of inclusion.. just write in) It is not a "battle of the bands," and will not be focused on which band or artist is "better" or "the best". It is a celebration of women in rock (however cheesy that may sound), and an expose of awesome and up-and-coming female artists/ bands. S.L.A.G. (Shimmer Like A Girl) will not be mass-media influenced, and will NEVER include the likes of the godawful Spice Girls in its ranks. S.L.A.G. is a forum to voice opinions, share information, and learn (unfortunately we can't open a montesorry (I did that on purpose) school as well :D). And golly gee willickers, it's free, and you don't have to do anything to subscribe! Please support Shimmer Like A Girl. A staff of writers will be needed, just write me to tell me you'd be interested in helping. Anna Brandt ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Nov 1997 08:59:11 -0600 From: Jason Capriotti Subject: NPR: Fiona concert review... First, let me start off by saying, "What an amazing show!" And I realize most of you would rather be hearing a POE concert review, but I'm sure a lot of you are also Fiona Apple fans. If not, deal with it. Now for the review. Fiona played probably near 15 songs, for a total playing time of about 1 hour and 30 minutes or so. I was amazed at how good the sound quality was, although I did of course expect it to be great. But I'm sure this is all boring... So on to Fiona herself. On the outside, she seems to me to be a really tough, weird girl. I mean, I'm sure most of us saw, or at least heard of how she was at the MTV Music Video Awards, which seemed to have given everyone a different impression of her. But last night, apart from her performance, I saw a sweet and "down-to-earth," if you will, Fiona Apple. After the third song, she said she was going to do a surprise. You could tell that she was excited about it by the way she couldn't keep a straight face. What happened was that sometime before the show, a fan gave her a letter to read. It was from the fan's sister who was sick in the hospital with appendicitis, and consequently couldn't attend. Fiona took it upon herself to actually call the girl in her hospital bed, just to say hi. I could tell how funny (for lack of better words) Fiona actually is while she was trying to get ahold of the sick girl. She was having trouble with the cellular phone and said, "Why is it talking to me?" I guess you had to be there. But at any rate, I thought that act was incredibly kind of her. More towards the end, a young lady took her 3-year old up towards the stage and got Fiona's attention. Fiona went to her, and started talking to her. Then Fiona got up, and said that she needed to give the little girl something. So naturally, she took her coat and started digging in the pockets. She pulled out a piece of string. But, this was no ordinary piece of string. She explained that it was from the video for "Never Is A Promise" when she rips it out of her hood. But as far as the concert itself goes, like I said it was incredible. She played all the songs off of "Tidal," as well as a few extras. As much of an "anti-Criminal" guy I am, this song was the best. Normally I don't care for "Criminal" too much because of how much it is played on the local stations. But, this was her best performance of the night. Everything from the way the song sounded, to the lights just seemed to be perfect, and again, you had to be there. So, if Fiona is going to be in a city near you anytime soon, I *strongly* urge you to get some tickets NOW! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Nov 1997 09:07:45 -0600 From: Mike Auer Subject: American Airlines Gay Friendly Policy American Airlines is a major sponsor to and supporter of groups like GLADD, the Human Rights Campaign, the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, the AIDS Action Foundation, DIFFA, AmFAR, and scores of community-based groups representing gays and lesbians. It is also the first airline to adopt a written non-discrimination policy covering sexual orientation in its employment practices. In an unusual joint letter released to the media on Friday, March 14th from the Family Research Council, Concerned Women of America, American Family Association and Coral Ridge Ministries, American Airlines was openly criticized about their policy. Radical right leader Beverly LaHaye also went on Christian "talk radio" on Friday to blast American Airlines because "American's sponsorship of homosexual 'pride' events constitutes an open endorsement of promiscuous homosexuality." She and the other groups have written Bob Crandall at American to complain that the airline has "gone beyond mere tolerance" of gays and lesbians. The full article appears in Friday's Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and possibly picked up by other newspapers around the country. It has come to the attention of the gay and lesbian community that American Airline's switchboard and e-mails are being bombarded now by homophobic and hateful callers who have been urged by LaHaye and others to DEMAND the company terminate its gay-friendly policies. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please add your name to this petition and forward it to as many people as you can. Hi all of you Angry Psychos -- I'm Fricka Ling, 17 yo female from the so cal area. I'm looking forward to some good discussion on this list. I first heard Poe's Angry Johnny on the radio and immediately fell in love with it for one reason or another. I'm mostly into alternative stuff, I just recently put the latest K's Choice cd in heavy rotation in my player. I'm also into harder stuff (like NIN and Stabbing Westward) but I also like a strong female voice every once in a while, as you probably figured out already. I tend to be a lurker in lists like this but I do have one question and maybe some of you could help me out on this one..... I'm looking for the band version of Angry Johnny, as I said already, I'm in love with it. I understand that there are copies of it floating around somewhere but I don't know where to look. Any info relating to finding these would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this far. Hope to hear for you soon.
