Subject: NPR: Suicide

I've never written to the list before, but I felt with all the talk of
suicide, I should share what happened at school yesterday.  I'm a sophomore
at a high-school in Northern VA, and this morning during first block, the
principal came on the PA and announced that a sophomore had committed suicide
the night before.  The told us of crisis centers, and how to get help.
  After the announcement, the class went silent.  Then 2 or 3 girls who knew
him started to cry and left the room.  The rest of us sat there, silent for
another 30 seconds, then little groups of people began to talk.  They went on
with their lives, a mere 2 minutes after hearing of the boy's death!  I was
stunned, as I did know the boy, and had been talking to him the day before on
the bus ride home.  As first block breaked, and we moved to second period,
you saw that there was very little visible difference from the day before.  A
few girls were crying, but the rest of the school was laughing and joking as
if nothing had happened.   It seemed, though this boy would never breathe
again, nobody cared, except the few who had loved him before.  I wasn't close
to the boy, in fact, I rather didn't like him, but I felt that I should feel
SOMETHING.  I wanted to cry, but in a sense, I wasn't sad.  I thought
everyone should have given him more thought, but I found myself forgetting,
and living as usual throughout the day.  It's really sad.  I don't know why
the boy hung himself, but I do know that this must have been the way he
wanted it, he wanted us to move on, and not dwell on him.  The part that
truly hurts me though, is that in 2 weeks, only those that loved him will
even think about what has happened.  If he wanted to make an impact, he
failed.  He only hurt those who had let him into their being, and their
lives.  And he did have friends, just a week before he had a Halloween party
with around 40 people.  All this was, was a sick waste of an intelligent,
outgoing youth who had so much to left to do in his life.  But all that we
can do now is to help the boy to council  those who knew him,  and allow them
to begin to mend the empty in their souls.  We can prevent others from dyign
though.  We can talk to those who seem to be depressed, and show them that
someone cares.

ahhhhhhhh
for weeks i have been missing my "recovering the sattelites" CD by counting
crows which i seriously need to function in my every day life.  i have been
listening to "august and everything after" to try and make up for the loss
but i have memorized it back and front and i needed the other one for some
diversity.
anyway, i went to go put on Loungeapalooza today and guess what fell out of
the case!!! RECOVERING THE SATTELITES!!!  woohoo!!!  this has been the work
of Evil POE, stealing all of my CDs and eating them.  oh well. i am happy
now.  but you never know when evil POE is giong to strike, so be on the
watch......

Sorry for the off-topic post, but I have yet ANOTHER project that I need 
help with, but this one is a bit more fun than the DNA project.

well, anyway, I'm doing a report on Janeane Garofalo, and I have to name 
and describe four significant contributions to mankind. I pretty much 
have three (her talent, her being a feminist, and her being a good role 
model), but I need one more or else I'll lose points. What I need to 
know is: Is she involved in any charities? I remember reading somewhere 
that she is, but I only vaguely remember that. 

Can somebody help me?

Personally, I think Evil P(*)e is seriously jealous of my other CD's.... 
she put red crap and blood-colored nail polish on Garbage (no harm done, 
thank god...), stole all but the CD itself from Jewel, ripped the 
holder-thingies out from under Mariah Carey (no great loss, but just the 
same...) and poured nail polish remover over my Romeo and Juliet CD, so 
now the cover is stuck to the case and I can't pull it out to drool over 
Leonardo!! She also stole my Alanis and I had to go buy a new one.  The 
only CD's I OWN that she is keeping intact are Hanson and the Spice 
Girls, and for some reason she has put the strange idea in my mind that 
I want to buy the new one... ARGH... DIE, Evil P(*)e!! DIE!!! I am going 
to sneak into her house, and pour black ink all over her Marilyn Manson 
and Harmonizing With Sesame Street... I bet she owns Celine Dion, the 
diabolical little daughter of Satan... SHE MUST BE DESTROYED!!

i have always found that the internet has for some become a place for the
lonely and the "outcasted" to meet other people and be on even
ground...over the internet you cannot be discriminated by sex, age,
clothes, wealth, race, etc.
You can be anyone...which is why i find the internet fun...
and i find there are so many other people who are the same way...
and come here for the same reasons, and yet, as we make friends, we open
up and find that it doesn't matter who we are because we are all humans,
and we all REALLY yearn for the same things in life...happiness, love, and
acceptance...
