Fortunately (or unfortunately) that didn't stop Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme (backed by a 32-piece orchestra) from tackling Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" - one of the very special little moments that take place on this tribute to the Cocktail Nation. Steve and Eydie suck the soul right out it. Listening to Lawrence croon the line "boiling heat/summer stench/'neath the black the sky looks dead" (making sure to emphasize the words "stench" and "dead") brings to mind William Shatner drama queen-ing his way through "Tambourine Man - kitsch factor aside. For instance, you can practically taste the gin in the groove of "She Don't Use Jelly," the Flaming Lips tune re-done by Ben Folds Five. A remake of "Miniskirt," teams up Combustible Edison with the master of space age bachelor pad music, Esquivel. Poe contributes one of the album's two original tracks with the torchy and beautiful "A Rose Is A Rose," Austin's Fastball do a cool and breezy version of Burt Bacharach's "This Guy's In Love With You," the Fun Lovin' Criminals cover "I'm Not In Love," and Jimmy Scott and Flea team up for the Captain and Tenille "classic," "Love Will Keep Us Together." Most folks will probably want to check out this record for the cheese factor of Steve and Eydie's "Black Hole Sun" but the rest of Lounge-A-Palooza really is a record worth owning.
