I flew into San Francisco on Friday and rented a car to get me to Roger and Alicia's house. After driving around San Francisco for a while trying to get to my hotel, I finally arrived, safe and sound. There was no action at my place so I wandered around the city for a while, hit a few bars, but mostly got suckered into the touristy places. I headed back to the hotel and crashed relatively early. Saturday (Poefestday) I awoke, damn my biological clock, at 4:45 a.m. and couldn't get back to sleep. I did some more touristy thing around San Francisco until about 2 p.m. then drove down the coast along Route 1 to Monterey. Evidently, the weather was uncommonly nice. The route I took is usually enshrouded in fog and not a very pleasant drive. I drove fast, slow, stopped, smelled the roses, dipped my toes in the Pacific, etc. I arrived at the Poe Fest as 4:45 p.m. Roger and Alicia were right--you couldn't miss it. With banners and balloons all over their house and the unmistakable "ANGRY PSYCHOS" on the front lawn. They also had these awesome POE luminaries (paper bags with candles in them) along their front walkway. I wandered in and introduced myself. Jason Crawford, psycho from Richmond, VA. *waves* Ya know, I believe there was some Poe playing over the radio and there was a cable TV crew there preparing for an interview. After dropping my broons in some ice and cracking one to quench my thirst, I continued to introduce myself and meet some old acquaintances. The party was about to kick into high gear. As the TV crew began the interview, the APs started going nutz every time we were mentioned. The TV crew started playing off our enthusiasm and we had a blast. Poe trivia kept everyone on their toes. And the Poe Fest horseshoes 1-3-5 game kept people in focus. Many cold frosty beverages and a few chat room sessions later I wanted to get some group photos while the sun was still shining. I then bolted from the party to hit another beach and try to get a shot of the sun setting into the Pacific Ocean. My plan was a good one, but the fog, kept out to sea, prevented my shot. Still, Roger sent me on a neat drive. After finding my way back to the party in the dark, it appeared more APs had shown up. The Ouija board came back out. 9:30 came and went. Sorry. I've got a shot of that cellular phone call to the mystery (408) DESTINY phone number. :) More poe trivia, and eventually all the questions were answered and prizes given out. More cold frosty beverages. POE live in concert... on tape. Then the limousines started arriving and the real fun began. I promised I wouldn't reveal who came to the party... but having a few limos made it so much more interesting. Unfortunately, I left around 1:45 a.m. after more videotape and Poe-oke (singing, dancing, tomfoolery, and video... I think). Roger told me Poe called at 2:00 a.m. I had a nice two hour drive ahead of me, and then, unknown at the time, a horrible return trip back to Richmond. The events in CA were really wonderful, and a weekend was not enough! There's lots I left out (mostly to protect the not-so-innocent) e-mail privately with more questions. I guess this was kinda long... there's lots more :) Jason Crawford Sorrow@poe.org s0jmcraw@atlas.vcu.edu - -- "How does a girl like you become a girl like you?" "Just lucky, I guess." As you may already know the Darwin Award is awarded to those members of the human race that do the most to contribute to the gene pool by killing themselves... Previous winners have included the gentleman who strap a JATO(Jet Assisted Take Off or rocket pod very short airplane take-offs) to his car and realized that there is not off switch. Another who in an effort to obtain a free drink by rocking the coke machine, was crushed to death by the uncooperative machine. This year we did have a tie, but together they have managed to push the envelope. John Pernicky and friend Sal Hawkins, of the great state of Washington, decided to attend a local Mettalica concert at the Amphitheater at Gorge, Washington. Having no tickets but 18 beers among them they sat in the parking lot and after finishing the beer, decided that it would be easy enough to hop over the nine foot high fence and sneak into the show... The two friends pulled their pickup truck over to the fence and the plan was for John, 100 pounds heavier than Sal, to hop over, and then assist his friend over the fence. Unfortunately for John, the Fence was a 30 foot drop on the other side... Having heaved himself over he found himself crashing through a tree, falling to the ground. His fall was abruptly stopped by a large branch which had been snagged by his shorts. Dangling from the tree, with one arm broken, John lookeed down and saw a group of bushes below him. Figuring the bushes would break his fall, John removed his pocket knife and proceed to cut away his shorts to free himself from the tree... When finally free, John crashed below into, Holly Bushes, The sharp leaves scratched his whole body, and now being without his shorts he was the unwilling victim of a holly branch penetrating his rectal cavity. To make matters worse, his pocket knife proceeded to fall with him and landed three inches into his left thigh... Seeing his friend in considerable pain and agony, Sal decided to throw him a rope and pull him to safety. However, weighing about 100 pounds less, he decided the best course of action would be to tie the rope to the pickup truck... This is when things went bad. Sal in his drunken state, put the truck into the wrong gear, and proceeded to press on the gas and crash through the fence, landing on and killing his friend. Sal was thrown from the truck, suffered massive internal injuries and died at the scene... Police arrive to find, a pickup truck, with its driver thrown 100 feet from the vehicle, and upon moving the truck, a half naked man, with numerous scratches, a holly stick up his ass, a knife in his thigh, and a pair of shorts dangling from the trees, 25 feet in the air... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Aug 1997 03:19:02 +0000 From: Casey Davis <7Goddess7@worldnet.att.net> Subject: oops sorry guys, i didn't mean to start anything by bringing up sXe. i feel like i've started a little "war"(used in the lightest sense possible). yikes. well, whateva love, casey ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Aug 1997 00:09:18 -0400 (EDT) From: Flickergrl@aol.com Subject: Re: VPR: POE on usa.. taping what? where? what channel? when? i feel so left out 'cuz i missed the whole big monterey thing. being 15 sucks. ~*brette ps - tank girl is a good movie, with an equally good sound track In a message dated 8/14/97 4:06:13 AM, you wrote: >I'm taping it.. Well, we did it! Almost all of it, anyway. Big thanks to all of you who attended and supported this event. Alicia and I had a slammin' time with the APs--as usual. Alicia and I will be posting our recap within a couple of days. It's taken a few days to dig out from under the rubble and find the computer. Until then...APs...THERE IS NO DOUBT WE RULE! The late night phone call from Poe confirmed that. Try listening to 95.7 FM (forget the call letters). It's a new station out, playing mostly light stuff during the day with techno-house mixes at night. I think it's trying to be like 97.7 (Hot 97.7) was before they were bought out and turned to crap. If you didn't like them, though, you're going to hate 95.7. Point? (being as how this is POE related) Well, I've heard her on there every now and then...it seems that some of her stuff goes together well with their mixes. Check it out, if you can wade through the spam you might find some jewels. Other than that, check out KOME (98.5, the old and faithful). Lates.
