(i certainly would like to see her make more songs =E0 la fingertips). nuff 'bout that 2. cds/recording media: <> well, actually, vinyl sounds much better than cds or any other commercial recorded medium. i have compared this on a $63,000 audio system (not mine, unfortunately). ask anyone who's into high-end audio and they will tell you the same. of course, vinyl is not as convenient ad cds, but... and yes, the record companies did make a big swich once, so i don't see why they wouldn't do it again. 3. bran van 3000 has anyone heard of this band? they are from montreal and they are, well.... it's hard to describe. sort of a mix b/w pop, trip hoppy stuff, alternative, with slight country/world overtones. anyway.... buh-bye for now. xo rastko - -- "We are punished for our refusals. Roger Regional Coordinator, West Coast Angry-Psychos rogerk@mbay.net rogerk@poe.org ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Aug 1997 15:52:36 -0400 From: "Colin Alexander Eliot " Subject: NPR: Recording Mediums OK folks- I have been quiet for a while now, but it is time for me to open my big mouth (so to speak) about recording mediums. Here we go: Anyone who tells you that vinyl sounds better than CD or any other format is a fool who has been reading Stereo Review too much and is falling for the "Julian Hirsh audiophile" point of view. Let's put it this way: Recordings are made on tape, often digital nowadays, but in vinyl's glory days, it was all analog. So, the master for everything exists on a tape. So I guess when this sound is then placed on a vinyl album, the sound quality is then IMPROVED? I don't think so. Since DAT and CD are digital, they are able to record a much better "image" of the sound info than vinyl, and are thus closer to the original. Ideally, a digital master and DAT or CD would have the best sound. As for wow and flutter, these are more prominant on cassette decks (obviously), but all turntables still have a slight amount of both, whereas CDs wow and flutter are undetectable. I don't know the stats on DATs, Minidisc or DCC 'cause I never was all that interested in them, but I assume that they are also undetectable. Thus the speed at which a CD plays will always be identical to what it was recorded at, whereas a cheap record player may lag or be a bit fast. Granted there are record players that don't have wow or flutter, but the thought of spending $2000 on a record player makes me laugh. I will give anyone this: Recordings on vinyl tend to be brighter and the slight flaws in the medium tend to make the music sound more natural. CD's tend to have such a pure copy of the music that it seems a bit sterile. I'm not 100% positive on this, but I don't think that vinyl is even capable of carrying the whole audible frequency range (20 Hz-20000 Hz) I think it drops off in the 40Hz range and I know that it cannot carry high notes with the same crispness as CDs or DATs. Since the vinyl sound tends to be more natural, I suppose someone could say it was better, but when you get down to it, there is no way that vinyl stores the audio information as well as a CD, as thus, it is not a better medium. Don't get me wrong, I like vinyl. One of my favorite possessions is my Violent Femmes self titled vinyl album. My family has probably 400 albums total, including a lot of classic stuff, and I listen to them quite often, but there is no way that you can say it is better. As for $60000 stereos, I find them a bit excessive and anyone that owns one probably has a problem with self confidence. Unless it is also a recording studio, there is no need to spend that much. I have heard stereo systems from $2000 to probably close to $60000 (home theatre components included) and to tell the truth, there is not much difference. Unless you have a room with perfect accoustics (ie deadening material everywhere), outside noise is going to be heard even at high volumes and the difference between a $200 speaker and a $2000 is almost impossible to judge with that outside noise. Stereo Review does most of their testing in perfectly designed rooms, and let's face it folks, most people don't have one of those in their house. Ta ta for now!
