I understand that. I just don't think it should be practiced. If you don't want to be called something, don't call yourself that. By casually calling other people of your sexual preference group/race/religion whatever by a derogatory term, you are telling people ignorant to the situation that it is okay to call that group by that name. I think that is stupid. I know that it all depends on the context but some people get upset just by the sound of whatever the word is. Like the O.J. trial ("So and So said the N-word"). That's why I respect people like Scott Thompson, or John Leguizamo (One of his shows was called "Spick-O-Rama"). They casually use the derogatory terms but understand if they are called by that. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 22:52:27 -0400 From: Rick Masters Subject: Lyza on Trip This is Lyza in Rochester greeting the list on my great Trek. Just because it has another meaning doesn't mean someone who used it correct should be attacked. BUT there's a good chance he meant it in the other form, and then yeah you should say something. Just because a word has another meaning doesn't mean it should never be used again. My baby sister has a big bird video where he uses the word queer. That is different. Jezebel already went through the whole derogatory remarks used by people. It is different when you are of that minority. When you use a term about yourself and others of your minority, it is NOT the same as someone outside using it. I am not saying that gay people have exclusive rights to the word gay; I am just saying that don't use it in a way that would be condescending to other people. Have you all read or saw on the news about the death of Versace? That really doesn't have a lot to do with our discussion about the remark that had been made, but it does have something to do with gay people in the media. The only time there is a real story about a gay person, it is bad. The media has made Ellen's "coming out" and Ellen's girlfriend into a contrevery. If you don't know what I am talking about, here is a small version... The only reason that Ellen has a girlfriend is that her girlfriend (I cannot remember her name at the time) wants to further her career. What better way than to cause a controversy? Now, Harrison Ford is making it known that the audience for his upcoming movie with Ellen's girlfriend will not believe that Harrison and her are really in love because she is a lesbian in real life. Well, Harrison, that is why it is called "acting". I think if every gay person in Hollywood came out, there would be a lot of broken hearts... both from straight men finding out that their favorite actress is a lesbian and straight females finding out that their favorite actor is gay. Sorry to make this so long, but that is my 2 cents on this subject. In keeping with the current list controversy,I would like to point out that even though I am white, and not a lesbian,I still have rights guaranteed under the Constitution, rights that the current crop of un-American (communist) politicians or poeple who think in 'Correctese'have not YET suspended, though I know they are trying to as I write this.I know this is not Poe related, but what else is nowadays on the list?As a White Male,I expect no support for my views as they are POLITICALLY "INCORRECT"Oh , I get it....its okay to be anything but a white guy?OK I understand the basis of it all now.Flame me if you must, but I assure you I reserve the right to post your venom to the list. The ONLY person whose anger I care about is Anthony Amato anyway, cause he is White and Male.Does Eyetalian count as White?heh heh. Once again ,as a public service ,I will post a couple of constitutional amendments for your perusal.Afterwards ,a few quotes. Amendment 1: Congress SHALL MAKE NO LAW respecting an establishment of religion,or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;or ABRIDGING the FREEDOM OF SPEECH,or of the press;or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. Amendment 2:A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS shall NOT BE INFRINGED (Emphasis MINE) now for the quote section of todays letter. Queer quotes "Were here! Were Queer!!"-Any Gay pride march.I lived in West Hollywood for two years, and liked it. "Love lies bleeding in my hands"-Elton John If I were 'homophobic' I would not live in Los Angeles Nigger Quotes "Burn , Baby, Burn"-H. Rap Brown (my favorite) "Fuck tha police"- Easy E.(ahhh..maybe this one is) If you think I am racist for using the word nigger than you are more full of shit than I thought Narrow Minded White Male quotes "Fear the Government that fears your guns"-unknown "If voting could really change things,it would be illegal"-Revolution Books,NYC "The Law is a Whore-If you dont have any money,go fuck yourself"-Me,Angry(white male)Terry And lastly,to lighten things up and hopefully keep the flames to a minimum, unrelated quote found as graffiti: "God id dead"-Neitzche "Neitzche is dead"-God God bless each and every one of you.
