A few months ago, i saw her CD for only hfl. 17,-- (about $8). It was the buy of the century. A friend borrowed it, and liked it too. So he bought it. It is cool when our favorite artists become popular, but not to the point where they become exploited by music industry zealots with no talent who just want to make a quick buck. Alanis was the victim of that, and the excessive radio play pretty muched did her in. She has unbelievable expectations to uphold with her second album, whenever that will be. (was Re: ANGRY CHICK SINGER) I sorta agree. I think that the problem lies in the gross trend that radio stations have been playing out any new song that comes along. Radio DJ's used to have a real job to do. They would setup playlists where each song meshed with the other songs that they played. And rarely did the same song get played more than twice a day and maybe no more than 10-11 times a week. Now, radio stations hire any popular geek who sounds cool behind the mic and pay them to spin the top 40's over and over again. If anything, people should start demanding that the DJ's actually do their job and setup a good set for each day, and add some variety to their playlists. I think it really hit me when I was at a party and the DJ went straight from the Beastie Boys to Selene Dion. I _cringed_ when I heard the transition. The sad part is that the empty headed DJ's on the air today are doing the same kind of stuff. I remember hearing my usual radio station do a fade-in from Alanis right into Jewel! Talk about poor taste. We need to start complaining to the radio stations about the crappy jobs they are doing in presenting music to the public ears. I am currently 23 years old, but for some ungodly reason, I keep having to change that number..... Seems like once a year someone tells me to add a one to it.. (4) Where you first heard Poe? I was in my buddy Tim's bedroom. His roommate Bill had seen the CD as a new release at (i think) MediaPlay and bought it because he thought it was cool looking. I listened, liked and since then have seen Poe three times live and countless times on video or the Minderasing device (otherwise known as TV). I am sure I messed this story up, and appologies to ilmortal for that. Please post a correction because you know how everyone wants to know about the burnout. (5) What other musicians do you listen to? This is simple. Nothing. I am currently stalking poe because I have no life and can't appreciate anything else or even think for myself. (but I do LOVE the SPICE GIRLS) No, actualy, like most of you I have a wide and varying intrest in muzik. I listen to everything from manson to PJ (that seatle grung group) and every in between. I just think thats stupid. I know people who like H****n and my sister likes the S**** G***s and I can tell, I have the gift being able to tell why people like music, that they only like them because they are popular. On the other side of the scale, I know people who hate some good bands just because they are popular. Personally, I like Alanis. Her lyrics are absolute BS but they sound cool. I'm not exactly looking for librettists when it comes to modern music. Fortunately, I found Poe. About radio: Like I said, I like Alanis. The reason I'm not burning the CD from hearing the songs on the radio is because I barely listen to the radio. Perhaps it's just St. Louis but they have 2 modern stations here: One that plays the songs where I can't tell the lyrics from all of the electric guitar, and the other simply plays crap. I listen to what I have here. And what helps me is that I have a wide variety of music, so I can switch 'em around and clear my palate every hour or so. Of course a lot of the pieces/songs are so popular they're cliche, but I still like 'em. Take Tocatta and Fugue, for instance. The first few notes of that song have been used so incredibly much that the song is very unpopular because we've all heard it. You know, on the organ: Da da Da... Da da da da daaaa da. If you listen to the entire piece it goes off on a fugue with all of these spine tingling minor chords and it's just so cool. Well, I'm rambling now. The term "angst" means a feeling of anxiety, aprehension and/or insecurity, "anger" doesn't figure into into it. Despite the fact that the words "look" alike, they mean VERY different things. Second, it is quite obvious to me that Garbage's "Only Happy when it Rains" is satire (as Katie Z. pointed out). Plus I have seen and read numerous interviews with Shirley Manson and she is anything but "creepy" as some have claimed, in fact she's quite cheerful and upbeat. After all, my will was broken by Mel C earlier in the week, so now I am a mess! I really don't have anything to add other than to mention this to any fans of Alanis: Do any of you own her older tapes/CD's when she sang more like Tiffany (remember her) or Debbie Gibson? Do any of you ever catch old reruns of "You Can't Do That on Televison" on Nickelodeon? Did any of you see her in concert when she was opening for the greatest musician ever-Vanilla Ice? Probably not. There is a reason for this, that being Maverick records pulled all of her old material from US and Canadian shelves to make room for her new image and to market her better. They didn't want some poor music fan to go to buy "Jagged Little Pill" and accidently pick up some crap about her in a shopping mall. That would ruin her image. Personally I have nothing against Alanis or her music. You must give credit where it is due though: Glen Ballard wrote almost all of the music for the album. Alanis may have done her own lyrics, but without music, there's no song. As for Maverick pulling old stuff off the shelves: I think that is absolutely pathetic. Just because you change your style or image doesn't mean you should try to hide your old one and pretend it never existed. That would be like pulling "The Joshua Tree" from the stores just because U2 changed their sound on "Pop As for Shirley Manson, I just wanted to say that she looks a bit like Admiral Ackbar from Star Wars. Ok so maybe Ackbar with a bozo red wig on-after all he was bald! I know i'll catch hell for that, but too bad. Garbage is a pretty good group though, so there. That is all I really have to say. I know I'm gonna get flamed but I think that the Women's Right Movement is out of hand. Now, read the whole sentence through without getting angry: I am against Women's Rights but I am strongly for equality of the sexes. I do in fact believe that women are the superior gender, I would know, I am a man and hang around other men most of the time. I just don't like it when they rub it in! Several women (Dont say I'm being general I'm saying several) I have known have said stuff to the effect of "Men should only be used for breeding." Now, am I wrong when I say that is not all too far than the philosophy of men who are sexist? They just like the sex, which is breeding. And that whole man bashing, "I'm a bitch, are you man enough?" I don't agree with it one bit. It's not helping women's rights it's making a lot of men angrier, which, by man nature, would make them usually more dominating. I'm gonna stop now before I offend too many people. If I insulted you I apologize now I just need this to be said. Besides, it's extremely rare to find any artist who does what they do for strictly artistic reasons. Hey everyone's gotta eat. If I find the person that keeps putting this soapbox underneath me your gonna get it. It's soooo high, I'm scared mommy! mommy? Where are you mommy? Help me I'm afraid!! I want this to be a universal theme that all Psychos will display proundly. The backround will consist of a collage of AP and Poe pictures. Please, PLEASE e-mail me any photos you have that you feel would be appropriate. I don't want just pictures of POE, I have plenty of them, I want more AP photos - AP's partying at venues, backstage shots of Poe & Psychos, any group shots taken at shows (Robby, that means you - can we say May 17, 1997). Jarrod: if you or any AP's have SLC shots send them. Things like that. Remember - these pictures are going to be on the computers of your fellow AP's to stare at day and night - so make 'em good! If you have a photo that you feel really needs to be on this but isn't scanned, let me know and snail mail it to me. I'll scan it and return the photo (disclaimer ;I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR PHOTOS LOST IN THE MAIL). Our collage's center piece will be the POE ball signed by her to all of the angry-psychos (the one found on POE.ORG). Also, if any of you have any sounds that you feel would be really cool, give 'em to me! I can take anything off of the album obviously, but any interview clips mentioning the Psychos or anything spontanious like that would be very cool (Jarrod- can you help out in this area?).C'mon AP's its time to chip in and do something for the good of the group, lets make this a team effort. If you have enough time to check your mail every day, you have enough time to e-mail me a photo or sound. Lets show the newbies that we are a strong family not a whiny bunch of trouble starters. If I get enough photos quickly, this thing will be ready by next week! Thanx PS. WE RULE PPS.
