(or one psycho at a time... heh) Article title: "Who Makes the Hits? One-Name Wonders Jewel and Poe Sing the Web's Praises" medium pic of Jewel, smaller pic of Poe from Las Vegas Concert BEGIN ...up-and-coming rock stars publicly recognize that the Web can help sell a million records, help land a record deal, or at least inflate a weary ego with an adoring Web site from a fan or two. The successes of Pos and Jewel Kilcher, two artists on Atlantic records, prove this. Poe, and Internet-savvy pop start bast known for her single "Trigger Happy Jack," credits the Net with saving her debut album Hello from being just another Atlantic tax write-off.... Think of fans as armies of evangelists. "This group of fans started a Web site and fan club called the Angry Psychos," she continues. "And I chat with them almost every Thursday night; but even more than that, these kids got togetherand made a thousand T-shirts [or 40 : )]and handed them out at the Grammys. It's like I have this cool street force of kids that I love.... What blows my mind about this is these kids have made a national organization, they have regional directors. At every show there's an Angry Psycho with a digital camera taking pictures." ... Nikki Slight, Director of Multimedia at Atlantic Records, ... "I think in Poe's case we've probably come the closest that any artist has to really breaking through via the Internet. She didn't have a lot of radio or video activity early on. We felt that we'd been truly able to build her audience in the early stages via her Web site [sidenote: nice try Atlantic, too bad YOUR site sucks]. ... Poe is even letting her online fans contribute to the production of her next record. "For my next record, everything from the record cover on down is probably going to be desined by fans of mine. It's more interesting, it's coming from the heart from someone who really gets your music and has become creative in their own right because of it; it becomes this big family." I totally understand what Brette's saying. Gavin is a nice looking guy..it definitely does get the band publicity, but what about if the rest of the band wasn't there? Bush wouldn't be selling anything because there would be no music. Let's face it. Gavin could not have a solo career. so, therefore Bush's music does sell itself. I don't think they're that bad of a band. I also admire gavin for saying that people should listen to them for there music and not just buy the album to look at his face. The most important thing is that they have made it in the music business. That's a pretty tough thing to accomplish considering today's society, so all the power to them. I have been out of town for the past 4 days so if anyone already posted this stuff..well you get it twice ; ) This is from am interview with POE from a magazine called THE WEB: "This group of fans tarted a website and fan club called the Angry Psychos," she continues. "And I chat with them almost every Thursday night; but even more than that. these kids got together and made a thousand T-shirts and handed them out at the Grammy's. Its like i have this cool street force of kids that i love.... What blows my mind about it is these kids have madea national organization, they have reginal directors. At every show theres an Angry Psycho with a digital camera taking pictures" http://www.cantnot.org/poe/ ====================== Dustin Shelby (dustin@cantnot.org or dustin@alanismorissette.org) SEND ATTACHED FILES TO: descent@cantnot.org CANTNOT.ORG - http://www.cantnot.org/ NEWS: Get info on Jagged Litlle Pill Live here: http://www.cantnot.org/jlplive ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jun 1997 23:47:20 -0500 From: Greg Luhman Subject: Poe and Crow, Very Poe Related, but not so important. Hello all, I was surfing around and looking at some poe sights and I noticed that POE our fave rock and roll star look like Sheryl Crow. I think they could be sisters :-) Mabey just a littel bit??? whatever, I dunno, just a thought. Also there is a deffinite connection in the names of these two talented women. Crow, a bird, POE an author, Crow, a bird in a book by the author named POE. "Nevermore Quoth the raven." Edgar allen Poe The Raven Just another thought. I think I smell a tour. I can only dream. Empire site! http://www.execpc.com/~jbeadle/empire far from complete, but pretty kewl i think. I spent a lot of time on it, but it's a rush job I did between last nite and now. I spent about 3-5 hrs i think. Yes all sound files are up, pics aren't done, I made an animated banner if anyone wants it, but I decided to not push it due to space. If ne1 has some extra space, the file is only 120k. I think i went over my space, so if ne1 could just lend me the room, it'd be a huge help. Thanx! Quotes, pics, "I wanna kiss myself goodbye" (basically the biography of the cast, it was sposd to be dedicated to what they left empire records to go onto), aren't up yet, but hopefully later tonite or tomorrow. Lynnaea AelCaymarth. Sure, that's not my real name, but then, using your real name on the Internet when the possibilities are so much more is, well -- too simple. (2) Where you're from?, Houston area, Texas, USA. (3) How old you are?, 18, baby. (4) Where you first heard Poe?, On the radio. Trigger Happy Jack blew my mind -- it was one of those rare songs that I had to get up and spontaneously dance to. Angry Johnny, while not being a dance song per se, was one that definitely moved my emotions as well. (5) What other musicians do you listen to? and Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, NIN, Depeche Mode, among others. My standard for judging music is how it moves me -- if it takes my heart, rips it from my chest, and throws it across the floor, then it's good.
