So, really, the star on the album cover--sheesh, her logo--is a manifestation of her signature. Of course, she has said that she won't tell why she puts the star there (read: Jarrod's AP send-in-your-question interview with POE). There are similarities between both stars, but, hey, two people separated by thousands of miles also came up with the idea for Natural Selection. It's just coincidence. Just a thought about interpretiations of Poe lyrics.... A few days ago Iwas thinking that most of Poe's songs seem to be about her family life or interaction with her parents...I think every song could be linked by this interpretation ( I may be really stretching it, but oh well) If this sounds interesting read on, if not, hit delete.. Obvisously some songs have a specific meaning (MOD are you out there means one thing..) but I think there is still some room for dual meanings.. I dont really have time to put all my thoughts on this down in an e-mail, but here are some thoughts I have had concerning the whole family stuff. The songs are a bit out of order, and I strech the meanings...sosueme... Hello Anyone out there have trouble communicating with their parents? maybe in the adolescent years, maybe because their parents were fighting and they didn't want to be between them, whatever. She seems to be trying to find a way to communicate and trace her roots. A little bit of little girl immaturity in there also "La De Dah De Dah Dah" seems kinda whinning to me) THJ About her dad.....She has said in interviews that he was very cold, professional, etc. perhaps this is the frustration of not being able to reach him ("cant talk to a psycho), perhaps it is the frustration of trying to expand past his view of daddy's little girl ("you underestimate my mind"). Star Wars was a favorite of her and her father's ("Jedi Mind Tricks") and just the adolescent anger at parents, especially when they are controlling ("why do you have to be such a dick?") Cherry Growing up...Cherry brings to mind virginity, this could be her parents (probably her dad) and their/his inability to accept her growing up/losing her virginity (symbolizes becoming a woman). ThatDay Pretty obvious mom references here....is Poe afraid of being like her? (why's your life such a miserable fucking joke?") or is she sympathizing with her? Is That Day merely a romantic thing or is it a changing point in her attitude (who cares if you dont like everything about the way I turned out ["you can't do anything right"], I'm my own person now)? Perhaps this is when she grows up... AJ I'll probably get crucified & flamed for this, but subconciously this could also be about her dad....the struggle between rebelling and pleasing the parent...also there is the whole Elektra complex (Freud says women always have some sexual desire for their father, just as men want their mothers). I'm not saying that Poe wanted her Dad, but I think perhaps the subconcious desires to please or anger him are linked to that... Dolphin Poe doesn't want to be the cold shark she sees in her father nor the soft fish she sees in her mother....she wants to be a strong, beautiful, natural, loving, fun, grooving person. And so she is... Captain is her dad, she struggles a bit between shying away from confrontation ("Dont tell the captain") and aggresive self-confidance ("go tell him what I said") Beautiful Girl Poe finds a new side to her mother, and a new side to herself. SHe sees a beautiful, complex person in her mom, and she sees how she has also grown into the same beautiful complexity. With even more awakening, she expands her view to a more universal truth, standing up for the beauty in all women. AnotherWorld If you've ever struggled (and I think we all have) you know the desire to find another world. some turn to drugs, some to religions, some to writing and some to books. whatever, Poe also seeks to get away from it all. With divorced parents, there were probably some hard times for her, fights betweeen her parents. SHe needs an escape... Fingertips Hell if I know.... Junkie See Angry Johnny & Cherry. She is declaring her independance from her parental needs ("Im not a junkie for your love") while exploring her new sexuality with this very strong, sultry song (which kind of defies the whole parental control thing... FLy Away Her Dad ("sweet bird of prey") dies and she finds a new side to him (see Beautiful girl) She copes with her pain of loss, of lost moments, of her love for her father. (This song pulls at my heart whenever I hear it...) HowLong "I wish I were more like that guy" that guy is her father, the cold and calculating Keyser Soze. She doesnt want to hurt, so she wants to be cold steel (T1000), able to "withstand the blast" But underlying this is the knowledge that she cannot be this...this song is what Dolphin is in response to... Well, Thats all for now. I hope I havent scared too many people with my analytic ramblings....
