It is an annual alt music fest that is noncommercial, unadvertised, and FREE. It consists of 5 bands, usualy 4 of semi regional fame and one semi national/world fame. It is held at the Highland Bowl, which by now many of you are familiar with, and it draws a crowd of perhaps 500. The sponsor is the owner(s) of "The Bug Jar" a small two room alt club that from floor to and including the ceiling is an actual artwork, and on the walls are an ever changing showing of local artists eye candy, i.e. they cater to the arts. It is my favorite club cause they know how to wallow in being different. There are no rules, no fences, bring your own food/drink its about a noon till sundown event, the crowd consists primarily of club patrons and neighborhood residents it is VERY casual, I think it draws about one cop. So if solid new bands are your cup of tea your not gonna want to miss this great outdoors show that has always been alot of fun. As I don't know how to create a mailing list, and so that everybody can filter there mail, all future references to this event will contain the subject line NPR:BJFest, unless the owner of the list tells me to take it elsewhere, or the response justifies my getting more organized. The best act I have ever seen at the BJFest was "Man or Astro Man" have you heard them? If you haven't, check um out and see if 5 acts of that caliber mite tweak you interest. Watch for a few more posts on this subject (BJFest) detailing the bands (not yet released) and perhaps a few more names of past bands that have made this event a treasure. sp00k@poe.org http://www.frontiernet.net/~usscvn65 edgarallen@poe.org What the printing press was to the revolution of our country, so shall be the net to the changes coming to our times, Angry-Psychos, "tappin a code" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 May 1997 20:23:48 -0400 From: "poe.org" Subject: POE RELATED - Send me your Shirt Orders!! Since the majority of the posts about the Rochester show have focused on the "violence", I am going to don my asbestos suit, and say a few things in defense of the city that I do love. Not before apologising to those of you who may have been assulted/offended/upended etc. during the show. It leaves a bitter taste, a sadness, to much of the warmth generated by "The Show" and the AP gathering. Actions speak louder than words so I will see what I can do to heighten the awareness of these incidents in the minds of those who help in making "The Nerve B-Day Bash" a reality. I mention The Nerve because it seems the tie with POE is as close as the AP's . I had completely forgotten the "riot" that occured at the first Nerve B-Day show. I was not at that show, I read all the details in the paper the next day and got first hand accounts from friends who were at the show. The Nerve http://thenerve.matrics.com/ was the new kid on the radio dial, in a town that already sports three noncommercial "alternative" radio stations including WBER http://wber.monroe.edu/WBER.html ( those of you with realaudio are in for a real treat as this site broadcasts live on the web) and WRUR & WITR whose web sites can be found at http://all.www.rochester.ny.us/nysid/rocheste/media.htm two way KEWL colleage offerings that had been serving up alternative/progressive since the eighties. So this town is spoiled, and WBER rubs WNVE (The Nerve) with ads that read "at least we didn't get booed off the stage at our own birthday party" in reference to what happend at the first B-Day Bash. The local population was way skeptical and resentful of the idea that a commercial offering could displace the very deep radio roots alternative and all forms of music have in this town (there are MANY noncommercial offerings see the media guide link) . Initialy I became so frustrated with The Nerve, that I called the switchboard practically begging them to reduce the number of advertisers per commercail brake, and I swear to this day that they created a commercial out of that phone call, the commercial is quite funny, I think my feelings at that time are a good reflection of how many radio listeners were feeling and that attitude was present at the first show. The Nerve has matured hugely, it is a very listenable offering, and I would guess enjoys a large share of the local market, it is respectable tho commercial. What remains from the first show is the TICKET price. Quite simply it's just to cheap, and I say this from what I learned from a similar experience we also had in this town. http://www.seabreeze.com/ is a local amusement park that is great no matter your age, but it had degenrated into a hang out and the troubles peaked when a mob of "youths" ran thru the LEGITIMATE patrons, snatching purses, wallets, etc, it was a minor "riot". The next summer the place was surround by fences and it cost eight bux to get in. The park was better than ever, immeadiately, and continues to get better, grow, and prosper in the face of stiff competition, from a large competitor who I won't name. Don't cheapen your art, people around here, and I would suspect in the concert going world regularly pay twenty dollars and up to see JUST one act. POE alone could support thirty dollars, tho I am sure it would be hurtful to me and others on tite budgets. Apparently ten dollars for two days of shows is just more than some people can handle, it just leaves to much money to party/drink with. There is the mentality that says "I don't care who's playing for ten bux its the best party in town". I would certainly be the first person to chide somone who said they were bored last weekend, because for ten bux you could have seen two days of shows. I honestly believe that at twenty dollars, real music fans would save there nickles and dimes for a six act two day show and alot of the voyeristic drinking fans would take up location elsewhere with a couple of cases of beer. About the "mosh pit" I am 39 and had NEVER did the pit, really had no intentions of EVER getting as close as I did that day. The AP's were suppposed to go in as a group, it never really materialised, I also had my twelve YO niece with me that day, alot of the thrills for me was enabling my niece to have this experience, she has been to more than a dozen alt concerts, but had never done the pit, so in a sense it was her day, and she wanted the pit so off we went. The majority of the individuals in the circle, were familiar faces to me, they go to EVERY show, to mosh. There have never been fights before, those guys all know each other, and I do mean ninety percent of them know each other. Of the people I saw involved in altercations, they were new faces, and they were drunk. I stayed with my niece at the front of the circle for most of the show, and she was never touched, while I was not concerned with the incidental contact that came with being where I was, I was spending my time divided between enjoying the show and making sure my niece didn't get mauled, I asked her often if she was ok with where we were at and she insisted she liked our spot, so we stayed. At what point I can not tell you but she said she was going to go back with Tammy (my SO) who was a few rows back on the park benches. I decided to stay where I was at, I am worried that some of you who saw me IN the pit, mite misunderstand my actions. I hate blood, especialy my own, yet if someone gets hurt, I react, and think afterwards, always while shaking. I was really trying to enjoy POE, and the good view that was offered everytime there was a lull in the pit, I was kinda more paying attention to the show then I was to the people around me, the crowd was going left and I was going with it but I just stayed focused on POE, and while I was being moved left, the path to POE was blocked by two guys flying thru the open pit, one guy going backwards, the other guy just blasting him backwards across the pit, all in one motion until the guy going backwards crashed the back of his head onto the tar surface at the same time I was in the process of for one of the few times that day, falling down, but I knew before I hit the ground which way I had to go, and I was the first one to reach the combattants, I honestly felt that the guy on the bottom was in great danger, and that the immediate removeal of the guy on top was an absolute requirement, (I am also guilty of supporting underdogs) I didn't think about doing it, I just did it. At that point MY fate was in the hands of the crowd, the crowd also chose to seperate the combattants, as seemed to be the norm for the day. So as far as my participation in that incident, I hope it will not be held against me for responding in a manner that I felt was moraly required. If your still gonna tell me I was wrong, then I'm gonna ask how glad would you have been to see me if you were the person lying on the ground. O.K. lets wrap all this up, I'm 5' 4 1/2 " tall and weigh 140 lbs, and was at the front of the inner ring of the mosh pit with my 12YO niece who stands about 5' tall, maybe. Neither of us were accidentaly hurt (cept an elbow to my head :> ) or assulted (cept a little by a drunk that insisted he was gonna push me in but quickly lost interest) Tammy, who is WAY into mosh pits and has seen MANY more shows than I, said it was the MOST violent show she had ever seen. All I know is that I could not believe the fantastic view I was afforded each time there was a lull in the pit, itz one of those pinch me moments cause I gotta be dreaming type things. I hope when POE returns that all of you who have been here, and more of you will come also. I feel certain that it will be in an atmosphere that doesn't require a rescue team every five minutes. I hope those who can make it so do it in a way that doesn't require the heavy handed tactics some of you saw displayed by the police officer on the horse who ordered us out of the park. (at the first B-Day Bash there were a bunch of arrests and lotz of MACE) I feel certain that the POE/Nerve connection will remain intact at least till B-Day Bash Three is over, I hope its the best ever, with a price tag that says its more than just a drunk fest. As I write this The Nerve in typical manner is running a commercial with you the listener wandering thru Highland Park taking in the Lilacs when you come upon POE beating up a bunch of elderly Canadian ladies in a dispute over the currency exchange rate. Like I said I hope the people who make it so, realize that people really got hurt, and some form of self policing without the arrests and MACE would be a nice compromise. Oh yeah Rochester was voted "friendliest" place, based on the natives willingness to return dropped money, and to tell ya where to go if ya asked them. :> sp00k@poe.org http://www.frontiernet.net/~usscvn65 edgarallen@poe.org What the printing press was to the revolution of our country, so shall be the net , to the changes coming to our times, Angry-Psychos, "tappin a code" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 May 1997 20:41:51 -0400 From: "sp00k@poe.org" Subject: The BAND Date: The aftershow gathering in Rochester at the hotel also included the band members who sat in another area entertaining all comers, we spoke about the net, and the AP's. Sure, anything is fun at $15 bucks a head! Hope he REALLY likes her music!
