My suggestion to impose consequences upon those who flame other Psychos, especially with the clear intent to harm them, was never intended to be a "Big Brother" sort of thing. I have never suggested that people be punished or discouraged for expressing their opinions, but I do believe that decency and respect in that expression are the burden of responsibility for that freedom. So, if you disagree, disagree honestly, without bullying your detractor. I'm sick of bullies, and fully intend to stand up to them when other APs are being victimized. I don't want homogenous opinions--I want people feeling free and safe to express what they really think. But when some seek to rule by intimidation, then the freedom not only of the victim but of all APs is threatened. My notion of a "Psychoflood" is simply democracy in action--people (who choose to) standing up and demanding an apology from whomever is harming another. If we don't look out for each other, what do we become? Cynical and apathetic. Psycholove forever, Padma _______________________________________________________________________________ Hey all, I'm studying for a Social Psych exam that I have later today, and read something I thought was interesting, and thought I would share it, because I think it has some merit in this current debat. And I think that it makes me want to retracked earlier statments that I made. Anyway, here goes: Analysis of the decisions that led to several international fiascos indicates that a group's desire for hamony can override its realistic appraisal of contrary views. This is especially true when group members strongly desire unity, when they are isolated from opposing ideas, and when the leader signals what he or she wants from the group. Symptomatic of this overriding concern for harmony, labeled "groupthink," are (1) an illusion of invulnerability, (2) rationalization, (3) unquestioned belief in the group's morality, (4) stereotyped views of the opposition, (5) pressure to conform, (6) SELF-CENSORSHIP of misgivings, (7) an illusion of unaniminty, and (8) "MINDGUARDS" who protect the group from unpleasant information. However, both in experiments and in actual history, groups sometimes decide wisely. These causes suggest remedies for groupthink. By seeking information from all sides and improving the evaluation of possible alternatives, a group can benefit from its members' combined insight. - Social Psychology (5th ed) - David G. Myers - p. 346 In closing, I guess the point that I'm trying to make is that in every group you are going to have some discourse now and then. And YES it is irratating to see someone get flamed, not to mention a bad way to prove a point. Everyones opinion is important, and just because some people can't voice their opinions without sounding like a jerk, doesn't mean we should ban them from voicing that opinion. However at the same time, I hope that those of you that read this, see that flaming is also a form of stopping someone else from voicing their opinion. I think over all, this is a great group of people, and that's why I'm still here. And I think if we all give it a chance, the AP love will prevail! I've seen it happen a few times, and I know it's out there, so I'll end my speech, and hope that you all took something good away from this experience. AP Love forever! Well all you Angry-Psychos... In July or August, a group of us West Coast Angry-Psychos are throwing a party called the "West Coast Angry-Psychos Poe Fest." We are making this announcement without the actual date so that all you APs can start begging, borrowing or well, you know the rest, to save your pennies and attend the party. The Monterey Peninsula is a world famous vacation spot and this will make it even more so. The party will be OPEN TO ALL AGES. It will be FREE. There will be lots of good food, beer and wine, (only for those with ID), and silly contests. The party will likely be held at our home in Monterey. In the coming days and weeks, we will fill in details, the first being the actual date. There are at least 15 hotels within walking distance of our home which charge on the average $50/night. For those that can spend a few days here, there is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, hiking, scuba diving, kayaking, whale watching, fishing, mountain biking and lots of good restaurants. This is open to any Angry-Psycho plus one guest. We want APs to bring photos, videos, and anything signed by Poe, or related to Poe to the party. We especially encourage the WCAPs to attend!!! Other party themes will be, Vegetarians vs. the meat eaters (an old favorite), Poe vs. (plug in an artist), "Founding" APs vs. "New" APs, and a roundtable discussion on the merits of cybersex. If you are even REMOTELY interested in attending this bash, please email me privately so that we can get a feel for general numbers. This will NOT constitute your RSVP, we will request that later. We know this will be a rockin good time...oh yeah, something else...could someone bring the "Hello" CD, I hear it has some good music on it.
