The band has had many problems with certain cities trying to deny them the right to play. Its true that they may worship satan, but the rumors of of sacrificing and murder on stage are all false. while i'm not in any way for or against this band, under the US constitution, they are guaranteed the right to free speech. the city of richmond tried to deny them these rights by not letting them play there. manson, along with the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on First Amendment grounds. They were arguing that the venue where the show was scheduled cannot ban a performer based on lyrical content alone. Manson won this case, and was allowed to play the show. Also, some trouble has been worked up about manson playing on the bill of Ozzfest. The Meadowlands, a huge concert venue in NYC refused to sell tickets for the show as long as MM was on the bill. MM, his lawyer, and Ozzy Osbourne himself took the case to court for violating the right to free speech. they won this case too. no matter how you feel about MM, or any other band, discrimination in music IS going on, and no matter who they are they should not be denied the right to play a concert and be heard and seen on the radio and TV. >> I live in Richmond, and I knew this was going to happen. My question is, why didn't the venue owners look into what type of band they were booking before they agreed to let them play? I don't agree with what Marylin Manson sings about or does, and I also think they just plain suck, but if you want to go see them, I could care less. I found the whole situation amusing. There is a small but vocal segment in the community that wants to cram their ideals down other people's throats, so they felt the need to make a big deal out of something so silly. Manson had only sold 1500 tickets at the time of the 'controversy', and probably wouldn't have sold nearly the amount of tickets that they did, had these people just allowed it to go on and never booked them again. That's what's going to happen to Manson eventually. Noone will book him... at least not in the more conservative areas of the country. It's going to end up hurting the band, IMO. Manson was only allowed to play because they had a contract with the Coliseum. They will never be back, that's for sure. And that isn't a constitutional issue. I just feel they made too big a deal over too little. On the Poeside of things... I really love how she translated the music from the album to the live show. It came off great at the Buzzfest. Her awareness of the fans and the energy she put into the show was very clear and evident. She was having as good a time as anyone in the place, probably more so. I wish I could have met her, but I didn't know anything about the AP's. I do know I was hooked the first time I heard her music. I loved the album, and just knew she'd be great live. She certainly didn't disappoint me! I never knew she was going out with Mike Inez... naturally, I have to hate him now... ;) Gaul Aiel @ aol.com aka Doug from here ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 May 1997 11:50:17 -0400 (EDT) From: "edgarallen@poe.org" Subject: High Ho Were Off 2 Highland Bowl Well itz 1140am edt and were off to the POE show, (my 1st Tammy's 2nd). I have to say that I agree with you on the discrimination angle, but I happen to like MM's music, and could frankly care less whether he worships satan, winnie the pooh, or the "Bridges of Madison County" (which is far more evil than satan could ever hope to be :) Besides rock music should have a "dangerous" element, I'd have to agree with Trent Reznor (quoted from a recent Rolling Stone article...) "Rock and roll should be about rebellion. It should piss your parents off, and it should offer some element of taboo. It should be dangerous, you know? Thats why I applaud bands like Marilyn Manson..." Heck thats one of the things I like about P(*)e (only one of the many things I like about her mind you...) Just the proverbial two bits...
