Ok, I didn't join this list to be regulated. The Government does that. My job does that. shit, even friendships are "regulated". The guidelines which are sent out are only suggestions, and I personally feel it would be detrimental to "regulate" this list. True, there has been alot of flaming, and bullshit which I do not like or agree with, but at this point, I don't think "kicking" anyone from the list is the answer. I know who the people are who tend to flame, I take what they say with a grain of salt. After being on the list for more than a few days, one tends to realize that we aren't always going to get along. so what? I delete what I don't want to read, and I read what I do want to read. Granted, it was a little annoying..(extremely funny, but annoying) to get over 100 emails with "I got 12,344", etc.etc. I was guilty of this also, so I am not bitching, just stating a fact. Just out of curiousity, lets break down what would happen if we did "boot" someone from the list. #1. They get booted #2. their friends are pissed, and hence we have democrats and republicans. (well, not really, but we have two definite split sides) #3. ok, We boot their friends who are flaming the list for booting so and so. #4. The original person we booted gets a hotmail account and signs on again just to start trouble..blah blah Ok, I am done.. And my point to all this? Maybe we should all just be a bit more considerate in what we do decide to send, type, flame, etc. (is there such a thing as considerate flaming?..or is that an oxymoron?) I appreciate it. regards, Kung-Gene airkc1@juno.com airkc1@poe.org ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 May 1997 19:07:11 -0500 From: "Joe Hay (Rakal)" Subject: flame mails Aside from all of the obvious reasons NOT to have a civil war, there is also the possibility that the AP's are being invaded. Note: this is no paranoid theory-- this does happen! Invasion groups join mailing lists and newsgroups and then post messages, day after day, on whatever the topic is, gaining trust. Then more and more invaders come and slowly start flame wars within the list until the point where people start to leave the group. When the entire group is filled only with invaders, they've "won", and go on to the next list. So, don't give in to the invaders!!! On a much lighter note, you can download concert videos of Hello and Angry Johnny at http://www.hbo.com/reverb (Computer literates can stop here) and then go to the Poe page and click on the thing that says "Select a Video". It takes a while to load so be patient. When the video is fully loaded, right click(or click and hold for mac users) and click on save movie and save it wherever. Enjoy! I don't know if guidelines are neccessary. Hopefully other AP's will just think before they write. i have had some problems saying things i didn't intend to say, and people say things they may wish to take back but once a letter is sent it is gone. jessica ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 May 1997 21:08:03 -0400 (EDT) From: Flickergrl@aol.com Subject: my discrimination in music speech. hey hey all well, you have all been acustomed to reading my schoolwork that's POE related (ballet dance...ahem) so i figured why not post this speech. first of all, i'd like to thank all of you for providing me with awesome information. i love you guys! i really wanted to talk about trigger happy jack vid too, but couldn't find a cool clip of that to show in school... oh well. here ya go. the topic is "discrimination in music" : P - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music is a part of everbody's daily life, whether you realize it or not. everyday, you wake up with your alarm clock playing your favorite song, sing in the shower, and probably watch some MTV or VH-1 while flipping through the channels on TV. what you probably aren't thinking about is how those songs made their way from the bottom of the huge music industry and got all the way up to having airtime for millions of people to see and hear. success in the music industry is one of extreme chance, for not every band can become "the next alanis morissette" very easily. you probably don't realize that many musicians are being denied the right to promotional airplay on the TV and radio every day. Radio discrimination began in the early 50s when airwave pioneers Todd Storz and Gordon McLendon brought about the beginning of modern radio formatting. The radio stations gradually shifted from playing a wide variety of music with a "something for everyone" philosophy toward today's tightly programmed, niche formats, and carefully edited playlists. Also in the 50's, 60's, and 70's was the issue of payola. payola is when a record label pays a radio station to play songs by their artists, and it is illegal. the radio industry dealt with payola charges and investigations by Congress, the Federal Trade Commission, and the FCC. In 1960, the govt. initiated an immese search of the entire music industry covering 27 cities to look for evidence of payola, including misuse of "free-bees" and chart rigging. WINS New York disc jockey Alan Freed's reputation and career were destroyed in 1960 when he was indicted on commercial bribery charges and accused of taking money to play certain records. Even today payola still continues to be a problem to the music industry. MTV is also looked upon for discriminating. A few months ago they released a statement saying that they are considering stopping the airing of alternative music videos. They think these videos promote bad messages to people, and might influence them to do bad things. People felt that MTV shunned alternative music but still was willing to play Rap and R&B music. If you have ever seen a music video or heard the lyrics for a Rap or an R&B song, you could instantly tell that there is alot of sexual exploitation, violence, and degredation to both men and women, but MTV is not worried about this promoting a bad message. Word spread around, and many people have started to protest, and boycott MTV. I recently have gotten several forwarded e-mails about the boycott of MTV, and the list of people it has been forwarded to was over 1000 names long. People are very aware of this situation and do not like it. Some of you might have heard of a singer called POE, or might have heard her hit song "Angry Johnny." MTV banned the video for the song during the day simply because POE was wearing a shirt with a human target on it. They felt this was promotion of violence, and should not be aired while young children would be watching. Instead, during the day MTV now plays music videos such as LL COOL J. If you have ever seen his video for the song "Doin It," you would immediately see the millions of women swimming and parading around a pool in nothing but skimpy bikinis, and hear the chorus of the song "doin it and doin it and doin it well" repeated over and over. I believe that this promotes a message much worse than that of a pretty girl wearing the wrong t-shirt. (show a video clip of angry johnny then doin it here) another controversial band i'm sure you all have heard of is Marilyn Manson. The band has had many problems with certain cities trying to deny them the right to play. Its true that they may worship satan, but the rumors of of sacrificing and murder on stage are all false. while i'm not in any way for or against this band, under the US constitution, they are guaranteed the right to free speech. the city of richmond tried to deny them these rights by not letting them play there. manson, along with the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on First Amendment grounds. They were arguing that the venue where the show was scheduled cannot ban a performer based on lyrical content alone. Manson won this case, and was allowed to play the show. Also, some trouble has been worked up about manson playing on the bill of Ozzfest. The Meadowlands, a huge concert venue in NYC refused to sell tickets for the show as long as MM was on the bill. MM, his lawyer, and Ozzy Osbourne himself took the case to court for violating the right to free speech. they won this case too. no matter how you feel about MM, or any other band, discrimination in music IS going on, and no matter who they are they should not be denied the right to play a concert and be heard and seen on the radio and TV. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- well, that's my finalized speech... please no public debating or flaming. any comments/arguments can be taken up personally if you feel the need. psychos, you rock. i couldn't have done it without you! brette, who has 17 days until she meets POE ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 May 1997 17:32:28 EDT From: x-jiff-x@juno.com (Daiv Hogan) Subject: Re: *NPR* This tripped me out... Hope you can use this. Cheers, CharmingMan POE: "you watched REN AND STIMPY or the morning cartoons recently? Have you watched COPS? Have you watched--I mean, I don't get censorship. I don't get why on LOVE LINES in K-Rock you can say "clitoral piercings," but you can't say "shit," you've got to bleep that. But, you know, none of it makes any sense to me, really. It's like, I don't think that "Trigger Happy Jack" was funny. I had a guy trapped in a jar, right? And I'm putting holes in the top of the jar so that he can breathe, with a knife, and there's a...there's a line...there's a shot that mimics the PSYCHO shot from the movie. You can show the movie PSYCHO on television, but you can't show that video. I don't know. I haven't been able to make sense of what gets censored and why. I don't think there's a system that knows how to make sense of it yet. = What about Angry Johnny, as far as "I want to blow you away". As far as that... what kind of flack have you gotten for that video? = Well, the most flack that I received, actually, was about the target on my shirt and that I don't really understand. I mean, to me, it's like, number one, I think what's healthy for human beings in general is to be able to feel free to acknowledge anything that you feel. Acting it out is where you get into trouble. I want to kill you is a very different line from I'm going to kill you, you know, because that incites an action, and it's like Victorian times when you weren't allowed to speak about sex. I mean, imagine how many relationships that destroyed. O.K.? [LAUGHS] So, the same way... I think with violence is that people have to acknowledge that there's an aggressive side of every personality. There's an impulse of anger and rage in everybody and suppressing it is the most explosive thing you can do, you know, which is why I think it's a healthy song to sing once in a while. = As far... [INAUDIBLE] Do you think it's a double standard when you see a rap video and there's guns and there's eh... = Not only that, I mean, I hate to say the clich=8E thing, but the way that women are represented in half these videos is hilarious, but that's O.K. You know what I mean? That... and I don't even know.... I don't even know if it's a negative thing. I don't know if I would ever say censor that, don't let that happen. But when you see something like that and then you see something like, O.K., we can't have her with a target on her shirt, I have a really hard time making sense of that. And I don't have the answer but I... I can't make sense of that. ------------------------------ End of angry-psychos-digest V2 #164 ***********************************
