There is a similar story floating around regarding a cake recipe. I forget the name of the department store in that story, but suffice it to say that they never sold that cake, but they mail a free copy of the recipe to anyone who asks just to get them to go away. :) Cheers, Jake ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 May 1997 09:31:18 -0400 (EDT) From: TrigHapJac@aol.com Subject: new screen name hi everyone-- i just changed my screen name--it used to be Poeski02 but now it's TrigHapJac!!!! just thought everyone would like to know :o) *~*~Kristen~*~* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 May 1997 11:44:00 -0400 (EDT) From: Linus Gelber Subject: Cookies - NOT! Actually, this is not a true story...it's one of the oldest shaggy dogs still out there. For the record, Neiman-Marcus in Dallas does not serve cookies, and never has. This story--with the details changed--has been traced back as far as World War I when it seems to have arrived from France (I believe this is correct, although it's been a while since I've been in the alt.folklore newsgroups). There's nothing true about it at all, but it is a sort of social phenomenon at this point. Other things not to be fooled about: Craig Shergold does not need your business cards; he was cured a long time ago (about 7 years) and the post office in his town has been swamped in letters to the point of delaying mail delivery. The NPR (National Public Radio) petition no longer has any connection to the people who started it, and signing it will do no good. ALL pyramid schemes are illegal, despite the current fad claiming that they have been reviewed and circulated by lawyers (the which statement is probably a crime in and of itself). There is no GOOD TIMES virus. There is no PEN PAL virus. Or, rather, the last two are "hassle viruses" in that they keep circulating and taking up bandwidth and frightening users: but they have no effects on your computer. Well Friends and Fans... Due to going through life with blinders on I was unaware of an incident a year or two ago that involved a person that goes by Angry Johnny. Just the name is what got my interest. In addition, this person approached POE at one point in 95 and said "HI... I am Angry Johnny". What happened was a mailbomb. 10,000 emails to whatever account that Angry Johnny chose. This is hacking at the utmost level. My chatroom problems have nothing in comparison to what our "friend" Angry Johnny pulled off. This is the second of two letters. The first was very publicized and this one was not. The neat thing is that Angry Johnny mentions POE by name in this letter. It is also fun to read who he mailbombed and why. If you know more about this story please email me (publicly if you think the list would enjoy your knowledge). Take Care Jarrod @poe.org P.s. I am jealous of people who will be seeing POE in the next month. :) > > [This is the second. It was done almost 6 months after the first, on > last x-mas eve.
